Tell Me what Makes God Good.

After the success (and torrential downvoting) of my "Tell Me what Makes Satan Evil" post, I decided to start the other side of the conversation. I find that religious discussions are, alongside discussions of the supernatural and extraterrestrial, the most interesting - so have at it!

  • It's an idea that helps to ground humans into a foundation from which to base their lives off of.

  • I have a slightly different but related question: Did God say he was good in what we have come to believe is the definition of good, or do humans just apply their definition of good to him?

A tragedy happens in someone's life. Choice A God is testing me. I will survive this tragic moment, and become a stronger person. There is a lesson to be learned admist the misfortune. There is a reason for this chaotic moment in my life, and God will help me through this.
not every religious person sees it this way, my brother is very religious though, and sees things this way.
Choice B Sometimes there's a cause, and sometimes there's an affect. Then there are times where shit just happens. People deal with life in many different ways, and tragedy can affect us, leading us to deal with those tragic moments in varying ways. I am not a religious person, but I do believe faith serves a great function in an individual. Faith is not exclusive to a religious group, but in this scenario, that is what we're speaking on. Is God good? Well choice A seems like a good way for someone to deal with tragedy if they are religious. Lead to believe that all things happen for a reason, that even the saddest of moments may have a silver lining to a dark rain cloud.
or so it seems, sry if that is a bogus assumption.
And on the flip side, those who take life at face value. I myself, see the world this way - the only reason, is the reason you give. A breathing, self aware creature, thinking for itself. "I believe" "I think " "I know" All stem from one's self. Though we are different, see things not so eye to eye....it is this fundamental truth that bonds us all together, making us one in the same. We each at times, (well not everyone, but anyways) attempt to spread what we think we know or have learned, to encourage others to partake in what we think may help them. Sorry if that went a bit off topic.

I won't openly tell why God is good because those reasons are my own. If people want to believe in Him then by all means they have every right to. If other people don't want to believe in Him, then I'll say it again, they have every right to. I don't like being the kind of person to shove my religion down somebody else's throat. I will only openly talk about it if someone has an interest in it, or in other words, looking to becoming a Christian.

        • God gives people hope we're there was no hope to begin. God can help people become a better person because it gives something for humans to strive for. God may not necessarily help me or you (because I question gods existence). But if believing in a god can help people or change people's live for the better than I say let people believe. Unless people's beliefs start to hurt other people then we have a problem.

          • Gonna try to esplain best i can. In my opinion (which in reality is what every religious debate boils down to), God doesn't just represent good, He represents everything. Love and hate, peace and wrath. Light can not exist without darkness, and darkness can't exist without light. Yin Yang principle. Since he knew most of humanity wouldn't be able to wrap their heads around this concept, he created a being of perfect good (Jesus) and a being of perfect evil (Satan), to try to help humanity steer in the right direction. One does not understand the concept of peace if they know nothing about war. Tl;dr God is both good and evil because the universe He created has both. His concepts of good and evil may vary a lot from our own.

            • The good thing is that some people who believe in him tend to be good. Even though they do it just because they will burn for eternity, at least they do good. But if his stories are real, he killed everyone just because they didn't respect his will.

Nothing. Religion begets hate, hate begets violence, violence begets death. Look at all of the turmoil in the world today, it can all be traced back to religion.

                        • If God exists, then he would be the closest thing (if not the thing) to an objective good. Morality is subjective, but it stands to reason that an all-powerful, all-knowing entity would at least have the privilege of setting a moral code. Who are we to question such a being with our subjective morality?

                            • He created all living things; He created the earth, water, birds, sky, fish, the plants and planets. He has given us Life in a world that is filled with Death, He has given us hope in times of fear, He has given us light when we are surrounded by darkness. He has given us the option to live again, to be reborn. He has given us so many chances when we deserve none. He has given us love when we should be hated, He has given us everything when we deserve nothing.

If there is a god, he/she/it would define what is good/evil. What said god would desire would be considered "right" and that which went against their will would be "wrong".

All it does it to point out the blurry and often subjective lines between good and bad. Which is a philosophical discussion more than a religious one. This could easily be, "Is Mr. Rogers good?" or "Is my neighbor dandy?"
