Light Level Does Not Equal Experience

Today is reset, so expect to see the recruitment section full of lame people requiring "experienced raiders" who must be 380+ For instance I already see a guy who's requiring 385 light and equating that with "raid experience" but has only done Vault of Glass twice. Done Crota once. He doesn't have the Relic of the Aegis grimoire card meaning he's never picked up the relic in VoG. For the veterans here we do not consider those the credentials of an experienced raider, you're just an experienced grinder. My team did WotM with our friend who was 347 light this past weekend, it was easy for him to hold his own and pick up on mechanics because he's an experienced raider. Only two on our team were 380+. People like to talk crap on grimoire ("nothing but ghost shells") but when I'm recruiting raiders that's the first thing I look at. TL;DR it's all in the hips Happy raiding, and if anybody wants to run WotM if I'm not on with my usual team I'm down, add johnd_oh on PS4

  • I ask for 370+ with at least one raid completion so I don't have to spend 10 min at each boss explaining the mechanics. If I was low light and not meeting anyone's criteria all id have to do is make my own group with players that are in the same boat.

  • I just ask how many doritos are in a family size bag. If they can't answer that, do you really want to raid with them.

      • If one looked at my grimoire, it may seem like I lack experience. My light level not even at a 370 on my main may also speak against me, yet I am experienced because I do my research. Before I enter any raid, I make sure to do my homework. Not for tricks or ways to speed through sections, but to understand what my job would be and make sure it is performed to a tee. To date, I have run every raid, short of WotM, and that is only because my clan has been a bit MIA as of late. I listen to what my team tells me, and I like to joke around and make the experience fun. But what gets me are the people who take everything way to seriously. Now, my lack of the total number of completions of a Raid does not speak to my experience and understanding of the mechanics. But often, that is what people assume. And you know what happens when you assume.

        • I've heard stories about how people took their light level -10000 friend through wotm, but isn't it better to have a high light AND experienced guardian? I'm all for helping new guardians, but until I can actually carry an entire fireteam of low level, I'm going to play with others who put in the time to learn the raid and get to around 370 light. If lfg posts bother you, make your own. Also, how hard is it to get to 365? Heroic strikes basically get you there, and any faction packages are a plus.

        • I agree that light doesn't equal experience, but light does equal capability in that experience so you can't really blame some people for not wanting to beat Aksis with a 350 after trying several times even if they do know exactly how to do the raid.

        • I agree. Sick of the light level requirements when the true indicator is indeed their experience in previous raids. I did WotM for the first time today and the other people in my fireteam were surprised it went smoothly up to Aksis. Just because I haven't done this raid, doesn't mean I've never raided. I remember the days of King's Fall when I joined so called "pros" with emblems and high light but they couldn't hold their own at oryx. Then other fireteams with some who never beat oryx before, were able to beat oryx after only a few wipes. Light level/Emblem is not an indicator of skill at all. It shows potential but it is far from a guarantee. Grimoire is far more accurate.

        • Agree with the point of the post, however asking for higher light levels weeds out the inexperienced from the people who want to get stuff done, anyone who's been in that final room of the raid knows if you lack the dps or if someone on any side is dying consistently at the worst of times then things won't get done. I hate elitism, but when some of us don't have 2+ hours to explain everything and forgive retrys then we ask for higher light levels. The one thing I won't stand for is being insulted, if I make a mistake I'll own up to it, if some ignorant scum bag then decides to insult me for it I leave, regardless of how close we are to defeating any boss. Mutual respect has been a dying commodity for quite some time in today's society.

          • Most often it does. People with higher light have most often put in more of an effort and have more often read up and watched videos of tactics etc. Higher light equals more effort that most often equals more skill with the current encounters.

            • Took 3 sub - 365 friends through last week. Like you said, Light is just a number. They all played better than some 385s I know. It's not the Light, it's the Guardian, the player.

                    • Hmmmm ... my grimoire shows that I've only beaten the Archpriest, once. Interesting since I've gotten the Prime. I have only beaten Aksis twice, but have been through the monitors and siege engine at least 4 times each. Not a great deal, but also not what's reflected in my grimoire...

                      • It's really about being good enough to stay alive and know the mechanics, though higher light helps. I've never seen any issues with 265s and above, it's usually a failure in mechanics that do it, or just being an idiot.

                        • I only ask because why not, how would I determine if someone is experienced? Would you say that my profile shows experience? What about players that started in year two?

                          • I don't always go on LFG for raid groups but seems that everytime I do, people like this exist. They're either no-life sweaty tryhards or low end scrubs looking to get carried. Apparently there is no such thing as "in- between" when it comes to LFG.
