Let’s talk about Trials.
Now after looking over the forums there seems to be a lot of salt in regards to ToO, and how it’s handled. Some people are suggesting "Playlist Lock Outs", you run you’re 3 games that week and your done. This of course of absurd, people paid for the game, they should be able to play it with their friends. Streams seem to gain popularity by carrying viewers, and people just like elimination. Other still have suggested once you, run flawless you are relegated to a Flawless only playlist, but this, again does not fix the underlining issue with ToO.
Many of you would be surprised to know the apparent algorithm according to Bungie for ToO is not based off your skill as a player or even your aggregate skill as a team. It’s not SBMM, or even connection. A couple of games in ToO make this apparent, lag, cheating, and very one sided matches seem to run rampant one moment you’ll 5-0 a team that you had no right playing against, and the next you’ll get 5-0ed against a team that had no right playing against you. The algorithm is based off you’re your ToO card Win’s. This is RNG in a playlist that should be about skill, not RNG.
This is ludicrous, for a vast number of reason, including but not limited to; people who have already been flawless playing again, against weaker opponents. Players who wish to boost their Trials Win stats so they play the first 5 games on a card, scrap it get another and play again. And one sided matches. The list really does go on and on and on.
The simple solution, a rank the Trials Play List.
I’m going to give a dumbed down overview of how this should work.
Your ranking is 1-50. This is displayed on your Emblem next to your light and level, if you’re rank 25 for example, the game does everything in its power to find other 25’s. If it cannot find other 25’s then it slowly opens the skill gap in both directions. So 24-26, then if it till has trouble, it keeps moving it till it’s able to find a proper match, connection of course being a high priority. For anyone keeping track this is how bungie handled Halo 3’s ranking.
The only problem, I see with matching people based on a ranking system, is the top 1% of players will play one another, opening up the lighthouse for more of the community. Which when you think about it isn't really a problem.
EDIT: It should be noted that the point of showing Rank in ToO, is less to denote elitism which, yes it will create, and more to hold bungie to account, with a number we can see at a glance how well the system is working, and hold them to account if it doe not work. Will there be exploration? Like there was in Halo 3, yes but under Bungies guidelines that is cheating, and should be handled accordingly.

Honestly, why not. I don't have a problem getting flawless but too many people bitch about it.
-
been to the lighthouse that week then you only go against others that have also !!! so a single guy carrying you ? well sorry you will be up against another person carrying or a really good team :) which would make for a lot more videos of single streamers loosing :) the current system is stupid I am a avg player and of course our 2nd match in all blue emblems and not a chance ! bring back year 1 and leave things alone
-
I never had a problem going flawless before, I only played a handful of times and I usually got it my 1st or second run. This week has been rough for me. Congrats to the teams that already went and the teams that prevented me from going.
-
Get rid of trials. Its a bullshit game mode and never should have been included.
-
1 ReplyThe whole locking out people so they can't do carries is silly since most guys who do carries don't pop their boons so they never really go flawless.
-
3 RepliesAgreed on game one I shouldn't be going against a team of 1800 elo with all flawless emblems
-
Good, sbmm shouldn't be in trials. It's the the team vs. anybody and only the good enough teams can go flawless (including teams with a carry)
-
I don't understand why the elitist people hold the light house so close to them and don't want anyone but them to go. It boggles my mind lol. There must be something lacking in there real life that the exclusive light house fills. It's just a freaking game that everyone should enjoy and not take so serious.

22 RepliesEdited by HoliestOfBeards: 10/3/2016 3:14:54 PMno. When Bungie implemented the rule that set you up against players who were in the same card position as you, Trials became even better. I love the fact that when you're at 8-0, fighting for your 9th win, you can be almost 99% sure the the other team is also fighting for their flawless win. It makes the competition much more intense and exciting. Receiving your flawless win by depriving another team of theirs. THIS is true competition. I dont want it to be easy. I've gone flawless 34 times since ToO started, BUT, I have not gone flawless in a pretty long time. Why? because the team that I put together is just not better than the team we face at 8-0. That is fine with me. When I get to the lighthouse, I want it to be because I smashed on fools, got a few montage-worthy video clips saved, and had solid communication with a good team throughout. Now, this is the part where I'll be considered an 'elitist prick'. Look, I DO think the lighthouse is for everyone, but you need to bring yourself to another level if you are to get there. I still haven't completed King Falls HM OR WOTM. You don't see me complaining about not being able to get an Outbreak Prime, even though I want it. The main point is, either I'm not good enough to beat these raids, or I cant be a part of a team who's good enough to beat them. Either way, its on me and my skill level. I can simply keep practicing in PvE and get better at it. Same applies for Trials. Its fine as it is. It is giving the already good players a place to compete and thrive and it is giving the other players a reason to try and excel, to get better. We don't want participation trophies man, somethings should left be untouched.

I'm just curious why they won't implement a rating system for all of crucible. Seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

1 ReplyI have never been flawless in my life and I have tried very hard to get there, but I also don't have a consistent team cuz my buddies go flawless and when I join it seems I get screwed over and they bail on me. I've tried to get better but I guess I'm too big of a scrub to do so. I'm not complaining that it should be changed cuz it is a challenge in itself and makes me want to get better. I mean I like it how it is but I do think its kinda ridiculous that when I do play we can get easy wins right away but that 3rd or 4th game we just get completely stomped 5-0 every time. I mean I would like to see it maybe not go like that? But I'm not sure if thats even possible and besides what do I know, I'm the scrubbiest of the scrub lords it seems haha

What is wrong with the flawless only playlist ?
-
It should die it's the most disgustingly toxic and flea ridden mode in all gaming.
-
coming from a guy who has gone 8-1 four times this weekend i defenetly agree that something needs to happen i mean there is a fine line between competition and a bloodbath

13 RepliesEdited by moke: 10/3/2016 11:21:14 AMImo the trials lighthouse should just have been changed to a point system like Challenge of Elders. A flawless run gives enough points to go. Points scale down hard so you'd need like three 8 win cards or 25 0-3 cards to get there. It's no longer the pvp endgame with the introduction of private matches and actual sponsored tournaments.

This would make it as much a challenge for someone with a 1.5 kd as it would a 0.5 kd. You're playing people of your skill but what about when people delete alt's and just reset their stats? The number should be more account based then character so it can't be exploited as much. I do like the idea tho, you don't get better playing players that shit stomp you or ones that aren't able to hit your head consistently.

3 RepliesHere's how bungie works. You want something ? You can't have it. End of story.
-
They should combine the trials score card and loot system with Iron Banner 6v6 then I would abandon trials forever.
-
3 RepliesEdited by Swarlly: 10/3/2016 7:45:14 PMWhat I don't like about trials it gives high skilled team mates a chance at better weapons than the peons such as myself. Then once those players get those weapons it just makes trials that much more of an uphill battle. But I get trials flawless players deserve more unique gear than me. There needs to be some type of reward
-
This is brilliant and of course great, but what happens when you're a 50, your friends are 1's? Also another problem, the streamers would shut down their streams if they had to play one another. I'm all for a balanced game. A problem I ran into last night was on a card with 8-0 (mercy) we ran into THREE back to back super sweaty teams that all were headed to the LH. Sadly we lost the next 3 matches. :(
-
1 ReplyIt would make much more sense to bring ranked playlists to the main crucible playlists and leave trials as is. Trials isn't competitive and never has been. Now ranked playlists of control, skirmish, supremacy? With loot to be earned within only those ranked playlists? That would be great. That would also allow Bungie to finally kill SBMM in regular crucible too.
-
11 RepliesI love it. There's nothing I hate more than the elitists pricks who "guard" the lighthouse. I was with my friend and we were 7-0 then we go up against a team with all their players over 160+ flawless runs. They clearly don't need to go they probably already have this week but they just want to make sure nobody else makes it to the lighthouse
-
3 RepliesSince Trials is the PvP equivalent to Raiding, there could be two modes, like raiding. Have a Normal mode, and hard mode. Normal could have SBMM and Hard could have ticket based MM. Could even add a challenge mode to it too. Such as win 3 matches with 0 rounds lost. Both could have the light house, but have different tiers of loot. Such as Normal going up to 385 light, and Hard going up to 400 light. Hard could also have specific loot for it that Normal doesn't just like the raid. Make them reflections of each other, and I think there would be fewer people complaining. Wouldn't stop the complaining, but at least it would help.
-
The point of trials is that the people who are the best at it get the best rewards. If you are in the top 1% you should beat 99% of teams, because you're better than they are. You shouldn't play against people who are the same skill level as you because that results in someone who is awful at trials having the same opportunity to go to the lighthouse as someone who puts in the time to be good.
-
Or how about just do the whole, light lvl actually matters. Not like in Iron Banner where they said it does, and yet I went easily lvl 5 on a white gear toon. No, last night I was one shot in trials by a 335 at 378. Yes, I came around a corner not paying attention, but 43 light level difference should afford a bit of resistance no? I shot a full clip into a 340s head with a scout rifle and barely took shields off due to lag. Yet die to a single punch from across the map? Before we fix match making on that level, we need to get matches set up in a stable connection way. Bungie choosing not to have servers we all connect to, and then singing praises about those that go to the lighthouse with blackbar connections needs to stop.
