After shooting a automatic weapon for the first time...
I recently was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to fire a fully automatic AR-15. For the newbs-
[spoiler]-Semi-Auto= One trigger pull, one bullet
-3 Burst=Pretty self explanatory
-Full Auto=Gun will continue shooting while the trigger is held down. [/spoiler]
It was a lot of fun, but I quickly realized how ineffective a full auto rifle is. After about the third round, it gets difficult to accurately fire the weapon. I feel the standard AR-15 being shot in semi would be most effective in a majority of situations.
Have you ever shot something like that before? What are your thoughts on the subject?
Edit: I've been informed that it illegal to modify an AR-15 to be automatic. I'm not sure if this is true in all cases or not. I rented the rifle from my local shooting range and the guy said it was an AR. So whether or not it is an AR doesn't really matter to me. It was fun as hell to shoot. It is in the video, so maybe someone could tell me what the gun actually was? Thanks ya'll.

I shot an m249, an m240b/l, and a mk 19. Slap some bipods on that bitch and there goes the recoil. If you wanna be a hard ass put it on a tripod.

3 RepliesThe AR15 is not full auto. That would be either an M4 or an M16, unless the owner modified an existing AR15, which would be illegal under current BATF-E rules, and federal law. Select fire only good as an investment on the civilian market. Fun to shoot, but not really worth much without some real training, a suppressor, and the appropriate sub sonic ammo.

I've never shot an AR 15 before. I've only shot shotguns and handguns. I think I shot a .22 rifle at my cousins cabin a few years ago. They had an AR, but I couldn't shot it because I was to young.

I fired a full auto AR-15, and I agree that it is very inaccurate. Full auto is usually used for suppressing fire, and semi auto is usually used for actually shooting people (I'm just talking about in combat).

2 RepliesIf you're on a range and using a vertical grip attachment and not used to firing for long periods, it's not best, and really I've found they are counter productive. Unless you are using one with a tripod and using it for longer ranges. You want to just have your hand nestled on the magazine, it's the most comfortable for long engagments. Plus for quick magazine change your hand doesn't have to move to far so it'll save you somewhere around 6 seconds. Plus I've always found it easier to get my grip back on the magazine well then a grip. It also will help with stability since you have your arms tight it your sides for the bone contact to your ribs. It also helps to just fire a lot. I've fired everything from a pistol to an M777 howitzer. So I can say I've had a little bit of experience.

Arguably, the AR-15 series isn't really meant as a full-auto weapon. Light weight, polymer components, etc. But yeah, automatics aren't great, but can be made relatively effective with training and repeated use.

Personally a fan of revolvers since they don't really jam as long as they are properly calibrated. Reloading one takes a while though.
