Hand Cannon Phantom Bullets

Hey community, just wanted to get your opinion on this as well. I am a hand cannon user and have loved them from the beginning but nothing drives me more nuts than hand cannon phantom bullets. If you use a hand cannon then you know what I mean. You land that perfect first shot and then either your second, third or fourth shot just plan misses even though your gun is aimed straight at his head or chest. I feel like hand cannons are close but I really feel like this need to be addressed. I forget Bungie's exact wording but it's something to the extent of taking your time with each shot. I'm sorry but that's not possible when you have people running around with guns like DoP that can mow you down almost immediately. With a hand cannon I don't have time to steady each shot to ensure it hits in these instances. I don't mind losing a gun fight but it drives me nuts when I lose a fight that I clearly would have won had that last bullet registered. What do you guys think?

  • They definitely need some changing. Bullets should go where you're aiming and not fly off in random directions. As a side not, can we spawn with more ammo for hand cannons? They're the only primary in the game that I've run out of ammo with. It's kind of silly.

  • Slow down. I've been having an amazing time with hand cannons since the update. And they really shouldn't have buffed fusions. Got my first ever unbroken during banner with a techeun rage.

    • The missed shot are due to the accuracy aspect, right? Its aimed correctly but due to the less than accurate trajectory of a bullet coming out of a revolver, it has a chance to miss. This is usually only an issue over long distances or moderate ones with heavy wind (or over something like asphalt on a hot day). Over standard distances the arch is the largest issue (aim lower when closer, higher when further away). Keep in mind as well that not every bullet is the same. Very close but not exact. Even a slight difference in weight or amount of charge behind it can change its accuracy. This is very well known stuff and why there's a chance to miss with each shot. Not that they're calculating ballistics with each shot, just random misses. At least it seems like a great reason to me. It could very well be a bug and there is no "chance to miss".

      • Bump, my eyasluna shouldn't need rifled barrel just to hit reasonably close range targets. 61 range and still damage fall off robs me of kills from med range. I destroy with my eyasluna but I want to use explosive rounds and I can't, it's rifled barrel or phantom bullets all day.

        • I've gotten some hand cannon drops lately with excellent rolls, but I can't use them, they're unreliable. You can be aiming straight at someones head and the bullet just doesn't register. It wasn't enough to kill thorn, leave fatebringer behind, or nerf Hawkmoon, bungie just killed the whole hand cannon class altogether.

          • They either need to make it so that all of your bullets hit when firing quickly or they need to increase the range of handcannons so that they can compete with something like DoP.

          • Happens ALL the time with my Hawkmoon - One time I shot this guy at least 3 times in the body and EVERY shot went straight through him, no doubt about it. So so so annoying, Bungie please fix.

              • They broke Handcannon accuracy in the 2.0 update and follow up shots basically have a 50% chance of hitting even within optimal Handcannon range. It was an over-nerf as usual. No other weapon suffers from this crap, it needs to be fixed.

                • Those who do not use the first curse cannot understand exactly how detrimental this is. If you miss one shot that should've hit and don't get a headshot, your TtK is so long compared to the meta. However, if your headshot doesn't phantom, generally can get the kill at the same time/earlier, because the impact makes it much harder for them to string headshots. But honestly this phantom bullet thing is true with most guns, it just happens more frequently with handcannons, fusion rifles, and the chaperone (possibly other shotguns?) for some reason. The stability fix for FRs basically fixed their problem because it allows you to deal more overkill damage, so bullets that don't register don't matter as much. Shotguns basically work the same way other than the chaperone. Maybe the slower the fire rate, the more it happens? But snipers are fine, so I do not know.

                  • I agree. I haven't used HCs much in Year 2 but I recently got a Down and Doubt with Zen Moment, Rifled Barrel, and Triple Tap. I used it last week in preparation of IB, couldn't even kill people standing right in front of me. Such a let down when Year 2 is supposed to be about trying different weapons. Big fan of HCs in Year 1.

                  • I agree, My son asked me to come watch because he was getting frustrated over missed shots. I usually come watch and tell him...well, you missed, its not the games fault...but this time he was not kidding. He was using Hawkmoon at mid range, first shot hit, second miss (perfect reticle placement on the head), 3rd missed (perfect reticle placement on the head), 4th connected and they traded....checked connections, no lag, just more of the same accuracy problems. HC are better now than they were in September after the big nerf, but they still need to fix the accuracy issue.

                  • This is the reason I cannot use the first curse!!!! I love the gun so much but between the goofy fire rate reset and the Phantom bullets it is useless! !!! It was a struggle for me to get and I really try to use it but it is so inconsistent it drives me insane!!

                  • Cannot even tell you how many times I will be point blank shooting someone with TLW, crosshair on their chest every time the gun fires, and no damage is registered. This happens significantly more often in matches where the general connection speed or lagginess of the match is bad. This leads me to believe it is an issue with shot registration, not simply me missing (phantom bullets).

                  • It's annoying as hell. Bullets go through people constantly. Making HCs inaccurate is not fixing the meta. If anything, it's going to make people use the meta more, because you just can't win against meta weapons. It already takes 3 bullets for HCs to get a kill and 2 need to be precision shots on many of them. You need to do this perfectly just to be in the ballpark with the fastest TTK weapons. When you factor in that you'll almost always need 1 or 2 more shots because 1 or 2 will be phantom, your only chance is if the person using a meta weapon can't aim. Many can't, but the difference is they may not be able to aim, but the game is actually making me miss.

                  • I'm going to get massive hate for this but I don't really care. The Last Word suffers from this massively. The randomness of the hip fire now makes it quite unreliable, even with ADS it's a problem. Hand cannon accuracy and hit registration needs to be improved across the board.

                    • Visual recoil doesn't always match the bullet spread decrease or actual timed recoil of the gun. It's annoying but done because actually showing the full recoil and associated factors visually irritates people to. Similar was done in battlefield. I'm of the mind that the sights should always show approximate bullet placement save natural gun inaccuracy. So make the sights follow the real recoil pattern.

                      • totally agree with you.. if the weapon fires that fast then it should be able to land that shot.. having to wait that extra bit even though the weapon fires at a faster rate is ridiculous. I was really hoping they were going to address this with the most recent balancing act.. to those who don't use HC, think of your weapon say an auto, that misses 3 of 4 shots even though its aimed at the head and you are able to keep it there.. how would you mida users like to miss 3 of 4 shots you were sure you should land.. coming back to reality, and whil ei understand this is a game and clearly not real, physics and some realities do exist.. and if I shoot a weapon that is aimed at the enemies head.. where is the logic in the miss..

I miss shots with hc's all the time regardless if I take time to aim or not. They just suck and aren't a real competitive option these days. I've got an Eyasluna with almost maxed stability and it still jumps around as much as any other hand cannon. I think Bungie just broke them. Edit: the Eyasluna is on my Hunter. It should be a beast, not a god roll but still pretty good. The stability doesn't seem to matter though, not to me anyway. I still miss shots with it and it seems very inconsistent.

                        • I heard trying to fire to fast causes the phantom bullets. It seems to happen less if you match the fire rate.

                        • you can't spam the trigger. You have to wait for the reticle to completely settle before firing the next shot. Even faster RoF HCs its the necessity. When facing Doctrine/High Rof Pulse it can cause you to fire faster which results in the phantom zone. Treat it like the DMR from Halo, gotta time it almost like a scout rifle
