I started ds3 with a pyromancer. After a few failures I got past the first boss. This is going to be a difficult game, but I like it. It reminds me of retro games in that it's not going to hold your hand and tell you how to play.
Any tips on building the class I've chosen? There are so many intricacies in this game, maybe hearing some advice will help me avoid leveling mistakes. Thanks, all.

For your first Souls game a walk through is recommended. These games have a steap leaning curve and players who don't get past that hate the games for the wrong reasons. Play the game you want to play. If you need help; summon someone. It's a feature for a reason. If you really want to overcome a challenge on your own, do that. The more you play, the better it becomes.

1 ReplyI recommend lots of dodge rolls and archers are buttholes.

Put points in intelligence, faith, and vigor(?)(the one that increases FP and attunement), prioritize your titanite shards to upgrade your flame. Upgrade that hand axe too, it's a superb fallback weapon to compliment your flame.

1 ReplySo I've gotten into the habit of farming enemies near a campfire until I have souls enough to level up and repeating this a few times without making any real progress. Is this a bad idea?

7 RepliesSince this is your first Souls game I would advise you to pick a Dexterity weapon such as Straightswords, Katanas, Curved Swords or Rapiers. Armour doesn't matter too much in this game, so wear whatever you think looks nice. Remember that you should find a weapon that you like and stick to it. You can switch it out if you find another weapon, but beware of upgrading your previous weapon too much since the materials used to upgrade weapons are a bit scarce early in the game. Since you use Pyromancy which scales with both INT and FTH get them to atleast lvl 15 and then decide what you wish to continue to lvl (INT are for more destructive spells while FTH are for buffing weapons and such) Other than that, never give up! If you find yourself stuck, don't be afraid to summon other people for some jolly co op(you must be in ember form)

4 RepliesPyromancy runs off BOTH faith and intelligence this time around, where as prior it had no requirements. Most spells require heavy investment in one or both of those two skills, depending on use. For example, offensive tend to be more INT based where buff/defensive are more FTH. Build accordingly. You always want a spare weapon in case, so debate on weapon class. Strength does more damage but heavy weaponry, Dexterity have light but less damaging weapons. I would go Dex. Always tune to Vigor (HP), Endurance (green stamina bar), and any Mage class into Attunement (spell slots and blue FP bar). You also want a decent dodge, so less weight is better, but take a hit to overall defense. Souls is about trial, error, punishment, retribution. You will fail, but you will learn for next time how to overcome it. Good luck Undead. Let the flames (and sun) guide thee. \[T]/

Only tip I can give you as a veteran DS player:
Git Gud.

But seriously, don't give up when the game kicks your ass. The secret to Dark Souls is patience.
3 RepliesThe only thing you should know is the location of the Pyromancer teacher. Other than that, the whole fun of Dark Souls is figuring it all out! I will only give you a small hint, as to the Pyromancer teacher's whereabouts!
Undead Settlement
Other than that, try to figure stuff out. It's fun. :)
