Vote for your favorite! I'll go over the old system for those that don't know/remember.
In year 1, "Light" was a separate stat found on Rare quality or better armor.
Once you hit max level (20), you needed to collect gear to get your level any higher (30, 32, and 34 were the caps for each expansion).
All legendary armor dropped at set light tiers. Normal legendary gear and vendor gear always dropped at a level slightly below raid gear, and raid gear always dropped at the current level cap.
In HoW, all legendary gear could be instantly upgraded to max light by using "Etheric Light," which is a guranteed drop from level 34 and 35 Prison of Elders each week.
Getting a legendary engram was exciting because it would decrypt into an item you could actually use, without RNG determining its level (unless Rahool gave you upgrade materials, which was not uncommon.)
A good drop could be the difference between level 29 and level 30.
You would never decrypt a blue item that was outright better than the legendary you just decrypted. Item rarity actually meant something.
Weapons did not contribute to your level, but their damage was directly linked to their attack stat.
Ghost Shells and Class Items were cosmetic items, as they should be.
Artifacts did not exist.
I like the Year 1 system better. I would pay money to remove TTK from Destiny's history.

Y1 was better. I think k if they want to keep the current system, light level should only be in units of 5
-
I like year 1 light lvl but I f they had it so all gear had relative numbers like year 2
-
I like how you level up with experience now but I don't like how you need weapons, armor, ghost, artifacts, and class items to fully level. I would like for them to bring back the attack/defense system from before and have it act like it did before; Armor provides for a total defense while your weapon's individual power affects it's own damage and Ghost shells, artifacts, and class items aren't 'required' to get stronger.
-
HoW because you could get any item in the game to max level with a less frustration as opposed to the double English raid bs we have now to artificially extend game past what it as ALREADY extended to
-
Year 1, but only if we are using it like Y1 during HoW
-
I loved the HoW light system anything and everything could be used maybe just make etheric light more rare that way you can see what is worth and what isn't

Seriously. Bring back the year one light system. I fucking hate not being able to wear last year's class items because it'll drop my light. The ghosts I'm not too bothered about, but my damn class items... There are such beautiful Rares and year 1s that I just can't wear regularly unless I don't mind dropping a ton of light levels. Just awful. And why do weapons have to do with your light level either?

Can't believe this is a question. There isn't one thing about year 2 that is better than year 1

2 Replies... everyone complained about yr 1's leveling system.. now that it got changed for the better everyone has a hard on for the old light system. Have some of these people even played year 1?? They messed up a lot of shit with ttk but the leveling system was a welcome change..

Year 1. I dot mind y2 light but year 1 was a bigger deal when you leveled up, and you could have more variety with gear, and engrams were actually useful.

Year 1.

Y1, at least when my raid gear finally dropped after a months long grind, I maxed. FML

Y2 light levels seems much better. Anything over 290 is fine for most of normal raid, though higher is better. Over 300 good for Oryx. Add 10 light for hard. After that you are just adding minimal attack and defense. So you can use extra drops to infuse other gear that you like. In year one I got tons of VoG boots for my hunter. Unless I liked the stat roll better, it was just 3 shards. Now I can use those extra boots to infuse other boots, even those on another character. Sure you have double RNG in some ways due to needing high light as well as the stat rolls. But the other option would be top continue with re-rolling at the gunsmith and etheric light. I thought both of those were terrible. It was a cheap fix to get old gear to max level. With infusion, if it carries over you will always be able to bring old gear up. Might take longer because multiple infusions are more costly than one etheric light, but it ends up more sustainable. I think the raid dropping gear in a 10 light span per mode is a bit much. It adds too much to the grind. But I think the gear and light system overall now will be better in the long run.

Year two is so much better.. Being level 31 and a half was so annoying
-
Year 1 was easy, get a drop and it will have a guaranteed light level. Now you get a drop which is just as hard to get as year 1 gear was but it isn't guaranteed to be the level you want, its stupid...

Edited by BanditNation: 1/19/2016 9:53:26 PMI prefer the Ascension system, it's much less costly for someone like me.
-
Y1 but only slightly.
-
I miss reforge more. They should have brought that forward with an armor reforge . Perhaps going to a forge master for both.
-
Same $hit. U gotta get gear regardless to move up.
-
I like Y1 better. I prefer the cosmetic class item be unaffected, because then you could switch it up. Also I don't like that you have a chance to get the gear from the raid, which has a chance at dropping at max light. Y1, if you got your raid boot drops, you knew that with the materials, it was max light gear.

2 RepliesLet me clarify a couple of things. In year 1, as you say, only raid gear had the max light level, and there was no ability to infuse until etheric light came along. Beyond a certain point, only RAID legendary drops were exciting and could level you up, because legendary drops from other sources were not at the light cap. For example, I never reached max level in the Dark Below, because I didn't have good luck with Crota drops. In year 2, you're GUARANTEED max light level drops from raid challenge mode, AND you can infuse them into any legendary item. Therefore, in year 2 all legendary drops are exciting whether from the raid or not, because your new legendary item might have a better stat roll or perks. If it does, you can infuse your raid gear into it. I honestly don't get the complaining about non-raid legendary drops from things like Iron Banner. Do people not understand that a great legendary item has two parts? 1. Stat roll and perks, 2. light level. You get the light level from raid stuff, and infuse it into your best stat roll/perk stuff.

I like Year 2 Light Level system but hopefully Bungie grows a brain and realize that just because a lot of people like year 1 or year 2 system it doesn't mean that they all love everything about it. What I saw from every DLC was a complete replacement of systems instead of incorporating new elements with the existing one while replacing the bad ones. A good example was the Necrochasm evolution of the gun. It started out as a common gun turned into a legendary then into an exotic. After that nothing. Exotic swords are closest thing we have to that system.

I liked year one. To me it seemed to give multiple pathways to max light. This allowed people to play what and how they liked without being forced into areas of the game they enjoyed less. Always amazed at how hostile some get when they hear others say they don't raid or have a difficult time finding a raid team (because lfr inside the game would destroy it but lfr outside the game is great??!?).

19 Replies"This gear is useless because it's 280." That's literally what infusion is for. I also laugh when people say they "only" got a 305. I don't care if you're 320, that's still a good drop. If the gear is good, use it. If not, infuse it into something you like more. It's not that complicated.
-
Nah, I like the new light system. Makes more sense.

Light system is so much better for year 2 But... The RNG of drops... Is stupid
