What light system did you like better?

Year 1 Light Levels

3910

Year 2 Light Levels

1736

Vote for your favorite! I'll go over the old system for those that don't know/remember. In year 1, "Light" was a separate stat found on Rare quality or better armor. Once you hit max level (20), you needed to collect gear to get your level any higher (30, 32, and 34 were the caps for each expansion). All legendary armor dropped at set light tiers. Normal legendary gear and vendor gear always dropped at a level slightly below raid gear, and raid gear always dropped at the current level cap. In HoW, all legendary gear could be instantly upgraded to max light by using "Etheric Light," which is a guranteed drop from level 34 and 35 Prison of Elders each week. Getting a legendary engram was exciting because it would decrypt into an item you could actually use, without RNG determining its level (unless Rahool gave you upgrade materials, which was not uncommon.) A good drop could be the difference between level 29 and level 30. You would never decrypt a blue item that was outright better than the legendary you just decrypted. Item rarity actually meant something. Weapons did not contribute to your level, but their damage was directly linked to their attack stat. Ghost Shells and Class Items were cosmetic items, as they should be. Artifacts did not exist. I like the Year 1 system better. I would pay money to remove TTK from Destiny's history.

  • A good drop could not be the difference between 29-30. ONLY VoG gear could take you to 30. I agree artifacts are a joke and class items should be cosmetic, or maybe just be what artifacts are but no light level. This way you get still get better versions of them but it doesn't really hurt. I like the current infusion system. I think it's an upgrade from the Ascension system. The idea of a material being THE endgame is silly to me. Breaking loot into other loot makes sense. HoW was only sweet because of the ability to ascend any gun or armor in the game to that point. Assuming the loot pool only gets bigger, the infusion system is still the way to go.

  • I think the year 2 light level system is better. The concept is simpler. But I have one huge problem with it. The fact that you can get rares better than legendaries. Common should always be worse than uncommon. Uncommon should always be worse than rare. Rare should always be worse than legendary. And legendaries should be the same light level as exotics (expect exotics should be more unique and necessary unlike it is now)

  • When they first changed it to what we have now I was excited because coming from WoW it felt more like what I already knew. But after I realized that the drops are not at a set light level, like all 310 from normal KF and all 320 from hard, I gave up on trying to become 320. To me it's just not worth the grind. In my opinion Bungie should have given all activities a set level that gear would drop at. For PvE they should have made all drops from the normal strike playlist 275, all drops from vanguard heroics 295, all drops from normal KF 310, all drops from hard KF 320, and each boss have specific loot in their loot table (that could already be in place, I don't raid enough to know). Also all drops for Nightfall should be anywhere from 305-315. I don't play Trials so I don't really know how the loot system works for that but for regular Crucible they should have made gear drop at 275 from the normal playlist and 295 from the daily and weekly playlists. Also, and I have felt like this since launch, I think they should have created separate gear sets for PvE and PvE with different perks that are more suited to their respective activity. For instance, in WoW you can go into PvP in your raid gear but you won't do as well as somebody with full PvP gear because PvP gear makes you deal more damage to players and take less damage from players. Likewise, you can go into a raid with full PvP gear but you won't do as much DPS as someone in full raid gear because the PvP gear sacrifices some useful PvE stats to make room for the PvP stats. In my opinion if there was a system like this in place the game would be more enjoyable because at you would know what level gear would drop at from each activity and you could gear up your characters more efficiently rather than grinding through the raid every week just to get a couple 300 ghost shells. And in PvP you would actually see a variety of weapons rather than just the best weapons that you picked up in PvE. Sorry for the wall of text. And sorry if some of it doesn't make sense, I'm not the best at communicating what I'm thinking in my head. I realize that not every idea in this comment is perfect but I feel like it would at least be a good starting point.

    • Take rng conpletely out of the game. Don't leave it up to repetition and luck to base what light levels will drop. Have random items drop within the appropriate light level off of bosses and normal stuff drop off of trash mobs. Someone doing norm shouldnt get the same light level gear as someone that does it on hard. That just isn't cool at all. And the progression needs to be better, like a good build up to raids. Its obvious that the current system is in place to stretch out the game until they bring along some more stuff. No true motivation to do things really :(

    • The Year 2 system works better with Infusion I think, since the stats don't change upon infusing gear.

    • 319 forever. One more raid, no 320 gauntlets means that I'll be 319 for at least 3 weeks.

    • I personally love the ability to wear whatever armor I want in year 2. Getting gear/ weapons to 310 is fairly easy now. If you're obsessed with 320 you aren't going to like the new system as much. That's just my opinion though.

    • I would like the light level of year one combined with infusion from year 2. And, ghosts should have perks, imo.

    • Both are bad, but I liked aspects in year 1 better. Remove light level entirely. Keep levels. Bring back weapon damage, and armor defense. A mix between infusion and etheric light. So the better your weapon and armor stats, the better you'll be. I liked etheric light, but it was hard to come by if you didn't have time to run everything. Infusion is slightly better, but you don't get everything out of it all the time. Instead, you should infuse a weapon or armor, but you get 100% of the infusion, so the lower weapon/armor becomes equal to the better gear. Class items and Ghost shells should only be cosmetic, though I do like the material locator on the ghosts. Artifacts should just give some perk for orb generation (Or, instead, bring back the ability to make 8 orbs)

    • I'll be honest. I like both. Year 1 seemed to allow more customization but year 2 gives me a reason to play longer.

      • i prefer how 310 to 311 is a noticeable increase in damage output and resistance.. whereas previously the same difference would only occur at 310 to 320 for example..

        • Both are terrible. Whoever thought that giving class items and ghost shells a defensive stat is a good idea needs to be fired. I was excited for ghost shells because I thought that they would give me more customization. I was completely wrong, then they took away more cosmetics with giving class items defense as well. It's ignorant..

        • I don't think people are remembering how brutally hard it was to level up year 1. It was 100% dependent of RNG.

          • Y2 seems to be less grindy. Which I personally like as I seem to have trouble finding a team that can hold it together through oryx. It also is allowing me to run the raid on my main(Titan) and share the items that would otherwise be useless for my Titan. So if I can only run the raid once or twice that week I'm fine with that. Example: My Titan has 318 arms. I get 313. Instead of sharding them and getting nothing out of that part of the raid for a whole week I can infuse them into my hunter's or warlock's gear. Also being able to take a shit 316 raid HC and putting it into something I use is far better than grinding for EL.

            • In year 1, you had a goal to achieve, being max level had major benefits, now nobody cares about getting max level. Also all raid drops were garunteed max level

            • Etheric light should make a comeback as an INCREMENTAL upgrade to any legendary/exotic Just making up numbers +10 for legendary and +5 for exotic won't make everyone instant 320's but will off-set the RNG drops also add EL into the loot tables for CE/VOG so they are at least sort of relevant again, maybe back in IB/TOO, keep in POE if you want to get a y1 item up to 320 (assuming it is 170 already) it will take 15 Etheric light y1 items wouldn't really be a problem anymore since most of the perks that made them potentially outstanding have been nerfed to crap along with other "rebalancing" that basically ruined some stuff and buffed some other stuff by .04%

            • Just the fact that everyone knew once you got 12 light you hit the next level. It was too simple to Bungie. Now we have to have infusion calculator apps and bullshit like that. Rediculous

            • Best system was HoW. Infusion is ok but it only does 80% of the value most of the times.

            • The sad thing is 70% said year one which makes me wonder how many people voted because from the beginning the light level system was complained about in this game. Infusion is overall a superior system compared to the old. There's a reason the name forever 29 exist it's because your ONLY way to level 30 was by playing VOG and then you had to beat one specific part hoping you would get that one drop on that character alone. This is why having more than one type of character was scoffed at by many because it increased your chances of reaching max level significantly than using one only. However this also meant you only had one chance per week to get a good drop so there were a lot of players who did not and would not reach level 30 until The Dark below was released. This created a environment where unless you had friend who didn't mind you playing you were excluded from raids with level 30 players because the jump in power was noticeable in VOG. With The Dark Below(TDB) you could buy level 31 gear from vendors that way all you had to do now is grind crota to reach level 32 the difference here was not only did you need he raid gear, but it was slightly harder to get the material to upgrade your new raid gear. Which is what started the Eris bounty abuse to reach rank 4-5. HoW introduced the Etheric light, and this for many ruined the games diversity because now our highly coveted VOG weapons were able to come out the vault and do max dmg resulting in everything released afterwards to be regarded inferior and not worth playing for aside from a few weapons. This created a very stagnant world aside from the fact that Etheric light was easy to get. This is why infusion is superior, because it makes use of common things not things you only can receive from raids once a week though it requires you still to use raid level gear to reach the highest levels you still can be competitive in pve and pvp without being max level in the game. The reason legendary engrams are so insignificant is because the game gives them to you more frequent and because of infusion being that you can now buy them and it's guaranteed for doing weekly heroics. However this is not a bad thing for the game being that they made dumb decisions in regard to other things in the game.

              • Y2 is better. Light level is basically item level now and not your actual level. And yes, I was lucky enough to hit 30 with VoG. CE was way easier and HoW was even easier than that. I do miss the gear diversity from HoW, but that is it.
