I'm an overseas/international student studying at Wollongong,Australia. My visa states that my attendance should be above 80% (at least 80%).
I've been notified by the university today that my attendance is below 80% (79% at the moment, with the possibility to change from 77-81), that I should contact a student advisor, and that if my visa is violated (remains 79% or under) that they will report me to the immigration. I'm extremely worried at the moment, because I received the message late, and I already missed 4 classes (it's the last week before exams, and I still have 7 classes left), so even if I attend all the remaining classes there is a possibility that I stay below 80%. My question is if they report me, would I get a warning? or would my visa get cancelled? (btw my grades are more than satisfactory)
On a side note, last time I received an email that stated my attendance was 84% and maximum possible attendance is 88%, so I figured that it's not possible to go under 80%. I was wrong, I skipped probably half of the classes after that email, and today I received an email stating that my attendance is 79% and maximum is 81% (huh?), I already missed 4/11 classes, so if I attend all the remaining ones and attend all the exams will my attendance increase to 80?

1 ReplyGiven that they gave you a range of 77-81% with 11 classes remaining, each class should account for .36%. Seeing as you've already missed 4, you could, at best, have 79.55% attendance (which rounds up to 80%). As for the visa, I'm not familiar with Australian policies but most countries would probably give you a fine but allow you to stay (I work in Taiwan and while I've never had to deal with this exact issue before, I have had to deal with some of the visa problems our employees have encountered). There is the possibility, however, that you get that one hard-ass, by-the-book clerk handling your case file. All in all, it's going to be close but you should be OK. Hopefully everything works out. Regardless, think of this as a good learning experience.

Probably shouldn't have skipped all those classes.

Just tell them you are a syrian refugee, problem solved. Then you're free to do ANYTHING. State laws don't apply to you anymore.

2 RepliesJust stop skipping classes and you won't -blam!- up your studies. It's that simple.

2 RepliesYou seem quite serious. But from past experience, this isn't a good place to ask questions like these, especially if they require any form of intelligence.
