Have never seen anime
Is that a bad thing? Any suggestions for a good first series to watch?

If u want some adult anime, no not hentai, I would suggest the following: Ghost in the shell Trigun Samurai champloo Attack on titan Those shows tend to avoid the usual trappings of anime and at least 3 of them are on Netflix.

Dragon Ball Z is the best, after that, watch the Team Four Star's version.

Definitely start with Naruto. For sci fi mech action I recommend Aldnoah. If you can get past horny animation/writing Sword Art Online is a great action love story. As for amazing action and humor? One Punch Man. Naruto has hundreds of episodes, Aldnoah, Sword Art Online, and One punch man only have a few.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a great one to start out with. It carries a little bit of everything an anime can have, giving you a good baseline to figure out what you may like in an anime.
