Since 2.0 dropped the bitching about sniper rifles has steadily increased to where we are now and every other post has turned into a nerf snipers thread. Even though there have been countless posts on those threads explaining how aim assist actually functions, the misconception that the bullets curve, magically track players heads, etc. refuses to go away. Planet Destiny did a video about this months ago that has been put on tons of these posts.
Here are the stats for all the popular sniper rifles from year one in the 31 impact class from planet destiny’s database:

Now after being presented with the numerical values for all the popular legendary sniper rifles in that RoF impact class over year one and year two, you can see that thousand yard stare is right around where all the other popular sniper rifles in terms of Aim assistance and stats.
Players are looking for a scapegoat for to blame for the sudden increase in snipers and they are blaming the wrong thing. While the thousand yard stare is popular since everyone got a well rolled one from a quest line, of course players are going to be using it. If re rolling was still a thing we would see everyone running one with shortgaze, performance bonus or unflinching, and hidden hand like they were with Her Benevolence during HoW.
The increase in snipers is because the primary weapon type has shifted from hand cannons to pulse and scout rifles, favoring longer engagement distances. Shotguns, while some would argue they have been nerfed into the ground, are still very very good, especially the high impact class shotguns, which everyone also got a perfectly rolled shotgun from a quest line, at a higher light level in fact.
Players getting sniped need to take into account that the meta and weapons usage has changed in the past few months. You can no longer basically go on auto pilot and get a ton of kills with blink shot gun and actually need to use some form of intelligence and map awareness in order to be effective with shotguns, as it should have always been. Use flanking routes, blink, shadestep, titan skating, sliding, etc. to get around or past sight lines.
A lot of players still scarred from the Thorn and Last Word days are equating over use with overpowered. 1000 yard stare has a flat 1.0 k/d among equipped players. In other words Bungie’s data shows it is very balanced. MIDA too has fallen victim to the cries for nerf simply because a lot of players are using it when it isn’t overpowered at all.
Now if you are going to complain about sniper rifles, there are two things that could be argued are actually worthy of your tears.
1. Special ammo is too frequent still and allows players to get most of their kills using special ammo. I’m personally convinced that a good amount of players in the crucible have no idea what a primary weapon is
2. Players are using sniper rifles to go for body shots. As the TTK has risen with the hand cannon nerfs to closer to 1 second it allows time for players to get the two body shots off with high impact snipers, something that was harder to do in year one. Decrease the body shot damage in the CRUCIBLE only to compensate for the increase in TTK.
a. For some context 1kys was 22.5% of ToO kills this weekend and only 41.72% of those were head shot kills.
b. Decreasing the body damage in the CRUCIBLE would promote and reward those of us that have high precision kill percentages and would increase the skill gap on sniper rifles a bit more.
TL:DR Complaining about 1KYS and aim assist is the wrong thing to complain about, if there is anything to complain about at all.

Bravo my friend ! I must say i'm very happy to read a post such as this. Well thought out, comprehensively detailing out your views of an issue showing intelligence as well integrity when faced with a secondary point of view ( which I may add was also a well thought out) if you consider all the finger-pointing and whining and relentlessly overwhelming nurf naggers that are in evey possible forum. I don't even have to agree with you although I do but that being said I would gladly discuss any issues you had because it' I don't even have to agree with you to enjoy reading your point of view. if even 1% of the people mover and posts and our forums change their thinking process to be more electric if even 1% of the people mover read the posts and our forums change their thinking process to be more positive even when outlining a negative positive even if outlining a negative I think we'd all be much happier if outlining a negative I think we'd all be much happier. Thank you for your thoughts.

Snipers aren't OP, I just think that compared to Shotguns, Fusions (both of which keep getting hit by the hammer over and over again) and Sidearms (I actually like but are slightly more ineffective than effective) Snipers are just the best option

This is all you need to know about snipers/sniping. https://youtu.be/0bv4Q0vXtmY Your welcome :)

4 RepliesIn my opinion snipers are for the lazy camping kind of player. I am sick of getting one shot whenever I run around a corner or through a door way. With that being said, I have no desire to see them nerfed, I would like to see PvP modes where there are no sniper.
-
2 RepliesA primary only with no abilities game mode would be great.
-
2 RepliesAnother thing Bungie could do is have us not spawn in with special ammo.

Edited by Wolf Fenrir X: 1/7/2016 10:14:38 AMNo curve but destiny does use a point of aim shift. Easiest way to think about it is to think of all guns producing a cone shot effect. The cone size is based on range with most guns having a similar bottom size to the cone at their intended range. Past this the cone and the point of aim shift ends. A fun way to test this is with the vex. Hip fire it at an enemy and move the aim around. You'll notice the groupings pulling towards the enemy. For snipers try hitting a phalanx's right eye from the front when his shield is up from optimal sniper range.

Sniping is not that easy. It can be hard to get that headshot when good players always move around. It remove radar and makes you vulnerable. You get 1 chance if enemy is decent, body shot them, does not kill and they flee. .. let's be honest, bullet travels Hella fast and a bullet through your brain will always kill you... everyone can use them, so not op.

1 ReplyNot overpowered, Overused!
-
3 RepliesMisconception : Sniping takes skill -no, you're just camping
-
67 RepliesIncreased flinch, increased ready time. Remove the short scopes. Pulling out a sniper rifle doesn't work like pulling out a sidearm. Placing rounds into a hard scoped individual shouldn't result in a headshot for me if they've eaten two pulse bursts. Reduce special ammo. Snipers aren't good because of their value, they're good in a meta where everything else has had the floor taken out from under it.

2 Repliesall snipers should 3 shot to the body and retain the precision damage for each archetype ldr can still revive kill pros- body and swap not nearly as effective, high impact still keep their advantage (killing supers, revive kills) high rof better if you're a body shotter, still have use cons - none?? comment something I guess if there is one
-
3 RepliesDecreasing body damage would ruin low impact high rate of fire snipers like the Emplorayans March (Forgot name)
-
Only thing I disagree with is making sniping body shots a 3 hit kill. I would rather it be a 2 shot kill still, but have it so that body shots against a full health enemy only takes away the shield. That would make it more of a challenge for people who like to camp for a body shot with the sniper, then switch to the primary for a one hit kill. This would also be a better solution for the luck in the chamber snipers allowing them to do extra damage to body shots as well, because this way would allow for the body shot to take away the shield and still do some extra damage to someone's health without fully killing them.

1 ReplyEdited by king199780: 1/7/2016 1:25:42 AMIt's not really that snipers are overpowered really...it's just that everything else is nerfed to the pits of hell...this meta has become a "keep your distance hide ya kids one"... almost everyone uses a scout rifle and sniper mostly...and yes aim assistance is pretty much a deal breaker for a lot of snipers...take a moment to think how many times did you die from a 1000 stare with shortage and not from the one off the crusible vendor or the black spindle?...aim assistance is not something new...I bet everyone that went trials year one and happened to see the Queens sniper were kinda worried at some point
-
1 ReplyOP, may I copy this post and use it for whenever someone complains about sniper aim assist? Your truth must be spread.
-
2 RepliesIf pvp Crybaby's end up nerfing snipers so they are bad in pve I'll be seriously butthurt
-
1 ReplyWell I'm not sure that anyone really thought the AA was the real problem it's just the answer everyone clung to. And yes I agree it is a scapegoat. Fusions and shotguns were at one point as well and after a certain point they were nerfed to right where they were needed. Problem was bungie continued to nerf them well beyond that point. Only thing that has ever bugged me about snipers is if I am shooting them they shouldn't have an easy time headshotting me into oblivion. Now granted it doesn't happen often but it happens often enough to the point where I have to question if this is a fair scenario. Other players are suggesting they do it like in halo where the enemy is forced to scope out when hit but that would take a bit too much from the snipers. Then there is the other possible solution of increasing flinch. This i feel is the best possible course of action as it would make the game a bit less one sided, possibly create more variety and give the perk unflinching an actual use in the game rather than its current state which is mediocre at best.
-
3 RepliesSniping is actually really easy in destiny compared to other games. Try the locus in black ops 3 and say to me that 1KYS is hard to use.

I might sound like a noob, but is there anywhere I can check how many kills I have with my legendary weapons?
-
9 RepliesI actually agree with reducing body shot damage. I almost exclusively snipe in the Crucible, and I've thought for a while that they should reduce the base damage of sniper rifles (PvP only) and increase the critical scalar to compensate. You'll still hit 400+ damage on a critical, but not 167 on a bodyshot.
-
Thank you for this well written and informative snippet. I wholeheartedly agree without comment. I liken the majority of complaints are from those guardians among us that refuse to adapt to the meta shift. Over time, it will shift once more and usher in the multitude of new tears that will blind us all with the bitterness of the salt that ebbs therein. Good day sir.
-
15 RepliesNo. Sniping was fun and a challenge in year 1. Now everyone uses 1KYS and lets the game get kills for them. You don't even need to aim. Have a enemy guardian somewhat centered, press L2 then R2. BOOM! If the game didn't give you a free headshot just switch to your primary and 1 shot them. Seriously try it out. 1KYS will kill for you more often than it doesn't. Defending it means you need training wheels to snipe.

I'm gonna be so butthurt if NLB gets nerfed

Nerf? Confirmed Main 310 Titan , only Warlock on 37!
