Mostly because they are starved for a sense of identity and they think it's hip to dislike mainstream Americanism. Therefore they adopt slang and colloquial from European culture. That's how we arrive at hipster fashion, which is a derivative of European styling. People are moving away from American sports and now think soccer and rugby is awesome and baseball and football suck. Basically it's like the 90s when black was the new cool. Now it's not cool to be American, but cool to be European and bash any sort of Americana.
