How Destiny Has Helped Teacher Manage Student Behavior

Let me preface this post by saying that being a teacher is not easy. I work in the Bronx, NY with 4th graders and the children are very behaviorally challenged. Constant attitude, disrespect, fighting, and arguing. Little to no parent involvement. I've seen multiple fights this year between students. Not a day has gone by where I didn't want to pull my hair out, until now. I've changed my behavior plan from negative to positive based upon an RNG model based upon Destiny. I actually thought of this while I was playing. Students are no longer penalized for negative behaviors, but rewarded for positive behaviors. Students are rewarded points (marks) for doing correct behaviors such as listening, working hard, or being persistent. Students are required to reach "x" number of points each day to receive the daily reward (daily heroic). The daily reward is for individuals and randomly rotates each day. Rewards vary from a homework pass, to 15 minutes of laptop time, to lunch with the teacher, shots at the class basketball hoop or a homework pass. The whole class also has a point total and a weekly reward (Nightfall) which is granted on Friday afternoons. If the class reaches its goal for class points by Friday, they get weekly reward. These rewards are random and usually range from, free homework for the weekend, class party Friday 8th period with snacks, movie time 8th period, or teacher comes to recess. Since I have been using this model that focuses on positive behavior and has Destiny elements, my life in the classroom has been so much easier. EDIT: I forgot to mention that all points progress is wiped each Monday and everyone starts fresh (weekly reset) EDIT: for those criticizing saying this method of rewarding positive behavior has been around for a long time, I would love to see how you function in a class room of 25 students. The system I had been using rewarded positive behavior weekly, but it was never the focus of the entire plan. Students were penalized in addition to being rewarded. That part has been removed completely and the focus is entirely positive reinforcement.

  • Eventually your class might turn as toxic as the destiny community, better keep plenty of new content coming!

Negative reinforcement never works. Ask my mom's dog, who decided to forgo his potty training.

  • You forgot to mention that school rumor mill and typical crappy students compose the school equivalent to the Destiny's forum. They will complain regardless of what effort you put forth to please them or enhance their experience. Some will still suck and get an F regardless of the number and different types of tests you "nerf". Its great to see an educator take the initiative. Good for you. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

  • It has been around for a long time, called "positive reinforcement", instead of punishment... You've just decided to use a newer twist, called Destiny. You shouldn't be so defensive of others who just say its been around a long time. Sadly, very very little in the real world is a truly original idea anymore, but we all hope, that just maybe, we've created one.

Good job on implementing this system. Just the other day I was thinking how this could also work in business management. I think you might find some harder working employees, less absences and better punctuality, etc.

  • I have a few things 1. You said homework passes twice 2. Teacher going to recess sounds more of a reward to you 3. Keep up the good work 4. Forum goers are trolls don't listen to most 5. Have a happy holiday

Destiny logic is more like Every week there is a weekly test that all kids in each class take on Thursday. You go home and grade them and give the grades back on Friday. The grades range from 0s to 100s. Instead of rewarding those who performed well, you randomly give out prizes every Friday to one student per class, the grade they got is irrelevant, and does not effect their grade as everyone automatically gets a 100. Now you have created a system where the children who are doing well are not positively reinforced and have no incentive to do well, and they all become lazy bums. GG Bungie

    • This is an inspiring thing i really like your creativity, I'm a future teacher and i like to say i approve this great idea, people are saying positivity has always been rewarded yeah but you have never been challenged for it, theres a weekly reset here and options are available its a epic way of moving forward without the classic approach this is called innovation keeping the good things and adding new better things. On the funny side i really had to say this:
when they arrive late at class do they get the best rewards? Lol just for fun
• From one teacher to another, kudos to you. It's not easy, especially when you're in a school like that (even worse when you don't get admin support)... Kids respond better when rewards are involved. Glad you found a way to maintain classroom management. I have a prize box, I randomly give out rewards to those helping out or doing a good job overall. Every day they ask me if we could do treasure box. :)

              • Reward them for what they are supposed to do anyways. Don't discipline their wrongdoings. Great plan....... This is exactly why the people that work for me expect a raise after coming to work for two weeks everyday on time.
