Let me preface this post by saying that being a teacher is not easy. I work in the Bronx, NY with 4th graders and the children are very behaviorally challenged. Constant attitude, disrespect, fighting, and arguing. Little to no parent involvement. I've seen multiple fights this year between students. Not a day has gone by where I didn't want to pull my hair out, until now.
I've changed my behavior plan from negative to positive based upon an RNG model based upon Destiny. I actually thought of this while I was playing. Students are no longer penalized for negative behaviors, but rewarded for positive behaviors. Students are rewarded points (marks) for doing correct behaviors such as listening, working hard, or being persistent. Students are required to reach "x" number of points each day to receive the daily reward (daily heroic). The daily reward is for individuals and randomly rotates each day. Rewards vary from a homework pass, to 15 minutes of laptop time, to lunch with the teacher, shots at the class basketball hoop or a homework pass.
The whole class also has a point total and a weekly reward (Nightfall) which is granted on Friday afternoons. If the class reaches its goal for class points by Friday, they get weekly reward. These rewards are random and usually range from, free homework for the weekend, class party Friday 8th period with snacks, movie time 8th period, or teacher comes to recess.
Since I have been using this model that focuses on positive behavior and has Destiny elements, my life in the classroom has been so much easier.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that all points progress is wiped each Monday and everyone starts fresh (weekly reset)
EDIT: for those criticizing saying this method of rewarding positive behavior has been around for a long time, I would love to see how you function in a class room of 25 students. The system I had been using rewarded positive behavior weekly, but it was never the focus of the entire plan. Students were penalized in addition to being rewarded. That part has been removed completely and the focus is entirely positive reinforcement.

This reminds me of the work John Bradshaw was doing 30 years ago. It worked remarkably well in an adult workplace. I applaud your creativity, positive attitude and commitment to your charges. All hallmarks of a great teacher.

Way to work your hobby into your profession. Lot's of hate in the comments and all I recognized was creativity. BRAVO. You stated you were working with kids. 4th graders....IN THE BRONX OF NEW YORK. Salute! You're a beacon of hope and a positive light in these murky forums.

Your RNG system actually works....Destiny's actual RNG system seems like it's run by Joseph Stalin

It must suck being a teacher. In high school, the students are so unbelievably rude (whenever they aren't on their phones). I also referee soccer games with 1-4th graders and whenever I try to call a foul, they never EVER stop. Sometimes I have to blow my whistle for a good 60 seconds as loud as I possibly can before they stop. I'd imagine it would be the same being at teacher.

8 RepliesEdited by pValue2010: 12/23/2015 8:01:48 PMJust to be a dick, I'm going to correct you on a common wording mistake. Taking away something the kids don't want (eg homework) is called negative reinforcement. Positive/negative refers to whether you are giving something or taking something away. Reinforcement/punishment refers to whether you are reinforcing or discouraging the behavior.

I don't know if you noticed but you said homework pass twice. But this sounds like it works pretty good. Good Job.

Plz nerf op BUNGIE, or I quit.
-
Just wait until the kids start to complain about the rewards not being worth the effort.
but grats on finding a system that works for you.
-
That's awesome!!

Good for you! It's awesome when you can utilize game elements in the classroom.

2 RepliesEdited by Commander B_rice: 12/23/2015 6:29:50 PMI like your approach in how you incorporate something you enjoy (Destiny) with your career. Just keep the kids away from the forums, I can see it now "Bungie plz nerf 3rd period, world map social studies too OP' "I earnt my hall pass, did you xurn yours??"...."Teacher, please take Johnny's red highlighter away he thinks he is a special snowflake"
-
I salute you!
-
Cool story bro. Maybe bungie will give you a fate of all fools.

1 ReplyDo you get 15+ hands raised when you ask for someone to hand out homework? If so, they are farming the loot cave for marks, patch it next year.
-
1 ReplyIf this is destiny you should have the students pay money for lessons (DLC) and pay to make you dance (emotes)
-
Just wait till one of your students gets this game. "THEY TOOK YOUR IDEA! WHY DONT YOU SUE THEM? YOULL BE RICH!" XD
-
Eventually your class might turn as toxic as the destiny community, better keep plenty of new content coming!
