How Destiny Has Helped Teacher Manage Student Behavior

Let me preface this post by saying that being a teacher is not easy. I work in the Bronx, NY with 4th graders and the children are very behaviorally challenged. Constant attitude, disrespect, fighting, and arguing. Little to no parent involvement. I've seen multiple fights this year between students. Not a day has gone by where I didn't want to pull my hair out, until now. I've changed my behavior plan from negative to positive based upon an RNG model based upon Destiny. I actually thought of this while I was playing. Students are no longer penalized for negative behaviors, but rewarded for positive behaviors. Students are rewarded points (marks) for doing correct behaviors such as listening, working hard, or being persistent. Students are required to reach "x" number of points each day to receive the daily reward (daily heroic). The daily reward is for individuals and randomly rotates each day. Rewards vary from a homework pass, to 15 minutes of laptop time, to lunch with the teacher, shots at the class basketball hoop or a homework pass. The whole class also has a point total and a weekly reward (Nightfall) which is granted on Friday afternoons. If the class reaches its goal for class points by Friday, they get weekly reward. These rewards are random and usually range from, free homework for the weekend, class party Friday 8th period with snacks, movie time 8th period, or teacher comes to recess. Since I have been using this model that focuses on positive behavior and has Destiny elements, my life in the classroom has been so much easier. EDIT: I forgot to mention that all points progress is wiped each Monday and everyone starts fresh (weekly reset) EDIT: for those criticizing saying this method of rewarding positive behavior has been around for a long time, I would love to see how you function in a class room of 25 students. The system I had been using rewarded positive behavior weekly, but it was never the focus of the entire plan. Students were penalized in addition to being rewarded. That part has been removed completely and the focus is entirely positive reinforcement.

  • Man... You and I should definitely have a beer sometime! Teacher here as well. 6th graders. In Canada, that means kids around 11 or 12. Not exactly an overly privileged neighborhood either!!! I have a system I think you would probably love! For the first few weeks of the year, kids explore a narrative universe I created for them through reading short stories, listening to selected music tracks and analysing concept art. After that period, the students are tasked with writing the biography of the character they would like to be in that universe. From then on, you basically have a roleplaying session every week with them. Of course, you can't openly call it that!!! They're much too cool to enjoy nerdy shit like D&D!!!! The kicker? Their adventures are influenced by what happens in the classroom on a day to day basis!!! I challenge them with either academic tasks or behavior I want to see improve. Challenges can be either individual or for the class as a whole. Whatever happens will have an impact on the next episode. Turned in your homework late? Guess your character won't improve his fighting skills because he skipped training! Keep talking and disturbing others in class? Well guess who just botched his stealth roll?!? It can even work the other way around: the story they are playing can influence what happens in the class for the coming week! Infiltrating the enemy stronghold? We get a few "silent work" periods. Just rescued a legendary blade master who can help with training? Extra study periods are available during recess for those who wish to practice divisions! The possibilities are endless!!! The kids get SO involved with this story, you wouldn't believe it! They talk about it during recess, they draw their characters when they're done with class work, they request to rework their biographies... Insane!!! Long story short: classroom gamification is not a trendy thing by coincidence!
Sorry for my English! Not my first language!
• What a great idea! I think one time you should give somebody 2 ascendant energy as their weekly reward though. It would be more fitting.

    • I realize as a teacher there's only so much you can do-- and you could certainly be doing worse... But to me, this is a bad practice. I do not believe you should reward children-- or anyone, really-- for doing what is expressly expected of them. It's much more realistic to enforce consequences, show appreciation and positive feedback for correct behavior, and only reward good behavior that goes well beyond what is expected. And in the real world, even the later two are [unfortunately] not always that realistic. That aside, I still applaud you for trying to make the most of a difficult situation... I understand the frustration of working with kids, trying to effect them positively, and knowing their home life is counterproductive of that... Also, Happy Holidays.

                  • I teach grade one, reward stimulus is great for getting kids to do things, however completely removing negative stimulus for bad behavior doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I'm not saying beat the little feckers down, you just have to have a method of putting them in their place. I take computer time (individual) /break time (full class) depending on what they do. Take a book unrelated to my class out = one minute from break time for the full class. Needless to say, no one does that one anymore. I do have a reward system as well, answer a question correctly/ ask an interesting question, get a star, get three stars, get a sticker, get three stickers, get candy. Give me an exceptional answer and I will give you the candy straight up, for example; "We use an before words starting A,E,I,O and U because they are vowels." - that would get you a candy.

For everyone that says that "Positive re-enforcement has been around forever! This is nothing new!" This is not positive re-enforcement. This is the engineered synaptic response system that has been researched and developed by corporations in order to make people addicted to their services through the creation of endorphin release in a behavioral modification arena. The students are not being rewarded for positive behavior. They are not being rewarded at all. In the same way that when you get a drop in a raid, you aren't actually being rewarded. It is merely an illusion of reward. These children are merely becoming addicted to the endorphin release that the teacher has conditioned them to receive when given a gold star. They aren't getting gold stars for "positive behavior" they are getting gold stars for doing what the teacher wants them to do; conform. All that being said, I don't think the teacher has any malice, this is merely the way that the education system is set up. It's not about teaching things like math, science, geography, etc. It's about putting human beings into the mindset of conformity. Wake up, go to school, obey, perform tasks on command, repeat. Create the habit, so later in life, they can wake up, go to work, obey, complete tasks, repeat. The science of this sort of social engineering is at the heart of Destiny, and it was well researched in the game's development. The RNG system is what the game is based on, and is the most advanced part of Destiny. It may be the most successful use of such tactics in a video game to date. It's no wonder that a similar model would be succesful in a classroom of children.

                  • Not really criticizing, just pointing out that this is obviously not true. Even if it was, you fail to state how your 'system' actually results in anyone learning anything.

                    • This is awesome, taking something that has proven power over human behavior and using it for good. Yes, it's been around, but its still awesome that youve taken your inspiration from Destiny, which many view as abusing this system, and youre using it for positive behavioral improvement. You should post these results in a news paper or magazine. Major bump.
