The Deal with Challenge Mode

Everyone needs to calm down for a second and take a deep breath. Yes, you were hoping for more. No, it is not THAT challenging. Yes, the loot is basically the only reason. No, Bungie did not lie. Here's the thing to remember: If you are on these forums and you have completed King's Fall, you are already in the top 8.5% of registered Destiny players in PvE. If you did so on Hard Mode, you're now in the top 2.7%. (Percentages derived from PSN trophy percentage stats. Screenshot here --> http://m.imgur.com/pfbQQFU) If your Light is upwards of 315, or if you have all of the quest/mission locked exotics, you are the 1%. The 1% is the predominant portion of the fanbase pissed about challenge mode, but they're also the most skilled players in the game. So obviously they weren't going to be pleased with anything less than 15 additional modifiers and mechanic changes and insta-wipes and blah blah blah. Because that's the only way the game would even be remotely challenging for them anymore. But Bungie can't predict the elite behavior of the 1% in development and playtesting. They have a limited amount of information to work with, and whether or not millions of players will use the mechanics the way they predict is impossible to guess. Hence pushing the Templar and Atheon off ledges, and being able to solo Crota and Skolas. The game was not designed for those things to be possible, and yet players of the most elite caliber figured it out and made it happen. Now, if Bungie created a challenge mode of those boss fights where those methods of completion were the goal, the players who already did it would be furious, and the other 99% would find it insanely challenging. Why is King's Fall any different? Most people in my raid group can't run the Warpriest Aura without consistently messing up, so we designate the more experienced players to do it instead. Most people in my raid group don't know how to run Golgoroth's Gaze, so we do the single orb strat. Most people in my raid group are awful at running relic against Sisters/Oryx, so we designate a runner and usually end up wiping if someone crappy gets it and messes up. Do you know why? Because most players are AVERAGE AT BEST at this game. Challenge Mode is designed to be challenging for the AVERAGE player, and to give rewards to those skilled enough to complete it. For those who were already that good, it's a testament to your skill that you could already do what 90% of players probably can't. For those who can't already do it, it's a test that they'll have to put themselves against in order to earn the reward. tl;dr Bungie designed Challenge Mode to challenge the AVERAGE PLAYER, not the Elite top 1% of the player base. They aren't mind readers and can't predict the behavior of the best of the best. Edit 1: Changed the percentage numbers above to accurately reflect current PSN statistics. Also, muted one user for saying I provided no proof, then when I offered to show him some specifically, he said that he didn't need proof to know I was wrong, and then called me an idiot. I don't care if you disagree, just do it like an adult and we'll be fine. Edit 2: 450+ replies and trending. Glad to see the forum is interested in a different side of the content argument. Thanks to everyone who has traded opinions with me so far today. Lots of common respect and solid argumentation, proving the forums aren't all bad.

I always do it in two rounds with my usuals but if its lfg it is almost always 3-4 rounds to kill warpriest, so i can maybe see how it is challenging when so many rounds go by..... I guess the "elite" (lile me) expected way more

just wanted to say that this type of feedback is what the games need as well. constructive and not some kindergarten level garbage that someone spews out because they do not get exactly what they want.

The challange mode is not really a challange . If a Team did beat the warpriest they most probably had always done it that way .

Agree Not everyone will burn through the raids fast without a good team from the start, for those that have to use the LFG's to put together teams, even the norm raid may still be a challenge Been saying stuff like this with others on my friends list....just because we find it easy, don't mean everyone else does

          • Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe the challenges will stack as they become available. In other words, what if to qualify for Golgorath's challenge you have to defeat the Warpriest via the challenge mechanics on your way to Golgorath so that the Golgorath challenge will be active when you get to him. Then in two weeks when the Oryx challenge is up you'll have to defeat both the Warpriest and Golgorath with their particular challenge mode mechanics in order to have the challenge active when you reach Oryx. So in other words, challenge mode becomes more challenging as it progresses through a three week cycle.

Only trading the aura as challenge? Its not that hard all you need is just two people who can run it. I'm not saying it should be over the top hard to where only the one percent can achieve it the way it is now where it pays out 320 gear. But its called challenged mode it should be challenging. Do I have an idea on how to make it harder not really. It should push you though and require you to work for it. An easy way to fix it have it be an actual challenge where the 1% is happy and it does kick you butt and make you work for it; just make it only give you something cosmetic like an emblem or shader as a reward. It does not give you more light only shows that you have done a challenge mode and succeeded. That way if you have not done it you do not loose out on the only consistent way to get 320 gear. Before you yell at me for not beating hard mode the only reason I have not is because I am in college and finding a raid group due to my schedule is not easy. Once on break I will beat hard mode.

              • This is true. While it may not be hard for the best of the best, it will probably challenge most of the community. Besides, the final 3 fragments are tied to this. Gotta make it achievable.

              • I agree with your post as a whole, but the stats from psn trophy percentage are heavily skewed since those include every single account that has ever launched destiny. You'd first have to look at the percentage of players that have even finished Kings Fall "campaign". Then that is your "100% of /active/ player base". I.e. 10% have finished the campaign 5% have finished the raid So 50% of the active player base have finished the raid. • Using the trophy percentages is quite misleading. Here's a repost of something I wrote on this topic in a previous thread:
The question of how many people do/don't raid is a tricky one. The most often quoted number (~23%) is obtained by looking at the percentage of players who have the raid related trophies/achievements. However, this number is a little misleading since many players never even finish the story. My favourite statistic is that only 36% of people have ever obtained and equipped an exotic. Does this mean Bungie shouldn't focus on exotics? The reality is the number we really would like to know is, how many of the active players are raiding. This is much more meaningful since those are the players who are keeping the game going and catering to them is exactly what Bungie should be doing to maintain the health of the game. Unfortunately, that number is likely to be considered sensitive enough that we may never hear it. We can, however, approximate a lower bound for it. We could infer that the 36% of players who equip an exotic represent the portion of the player base who are active players, since most active end game players will wind up obtaining an exotic somehow. This number is in reality a little high, but that's fine since we're only approximating a lower bound and not trying to get an accurate number. So, of the 36% who have equipped an exotic, we know that about 64% have completed a raid (23*100/36). Again, there's a margin for error here since I'm assuming the set of people who have raided are a sub set of the people who have equipped an exotic, but I suspect the margin of error is quite small. TL;DR: at least 64% of active players are raiders.
• Yeah, to me it seems like they listened to every one complaining about the lack of gear and answered with the 320 guaranteed drops.. I mean it's not like new challenges can't be added like modifiers anyway

                  • Wait,...what? They added a challenge mode? Sorry, I don't play much, anymore. This sounds really bad, though. They are giving you the same gear, with different numbers for beating the same thing you've been beating for awhile now, only in a different way? And you like it? Smh....

                  • Euhm.... If you finished HARD MODE you are part of TOP 2.7 % players... LOL and how much is that of STILL ACTIVE PLAYERS ???? 45 % maybe ???? come on when you throw stats... dont use biased stats ! The amount of players that played this game no more then 3 hours is probably HUGE ! Im part of that 1 % ... and TBH ... this MODE should be MADE for that 1 PERCENT !!!! All the noobs who cant even finish hard mode... this is obviously not made for them now is it ??????????? There goes your whole story ! Bungie did a HORRIBLE job ! This is just another smack in the face... I bet if you let players MOD this they do a better job then this shit made by "pro's" Yes SHIT !

We even had a couple guardians down at the end but we still beat it and thats due to the trust we have in each others abilities. We were happy for the gear we got but we also get tired of the rng grind that screwed my clan leader all of yr 1 with no gjhallahorn but he platinumed the game with out till xur sold it again. Rng still hates us tho lol
