The Deal with Challenge Mode

Everyone needs to calm down for a second and take a deep breath. Yes, you were hoping for more. No, it is not THAT challenging. Yes, the loot is basically the only reason. No, Bungie did not lie. Here's the thing to remember: If you are on these forums and you have completed King's Fall, you are already in the top 8.5% of registered Destiny players in PvE. If you did so on Hard Mode, you're now in the top 2.7%. (Percentages derived from PSN trophy percentage stats. Screenshot here --> http://m.imgur.com/pfbQQFU) If your Light is upwards of 315, or if you have all of the quest/mission locked exotics, you are the 1%. The 1% is the predominant portion of the fanbase pissed about challenge mode, but they're also the most skilled players in the game. So obviously they weren't going to be pleased with anything less than 15 additional modifiers and mechanic changes and insta-wipes and blah blah blah. Because that's the only way the game would even be remotely challenging for them anymore. But Bungie can't predict the elite behavior of the 1% in development and playtesting. They have a limited amount of information to work with, and whether or not millions of players will use the mechanics the way they predict is impossible to guess. Hence pushing the Templar and Atheon off ledges, and being able to solo Crota and Skolas. The game was not designed for those things to be possible, and yet players of the most elite caliber figured it out and made it happen. Now, if Bungie created a challenge mode of those boss fights where those methods of completion were the goal, the players who already did it would be furious, and the other 99% would find it insanely challenging. Why is King's Fall any different? Most people in my raid group can't run the Warpriest Aura without consistently messing up, so we designate the more experienced players to do it instead. Most people in my raid group don't know how to run Golgoroth's Gaze, so we do the single orb strat. Most people in my raid group are awful at running relic against Sisters/Oryx, so we designate a runner and usually end up wiping if someone crappy gets it and messes up. Do you know why? Because most players are AVERAGE AT BEST at this game. Challenge Mode is designed to be challenging for the AVERAGE player, and to give rewards to those skilled enough to complete it. For those who were already that good, it's a testament to your skill that you could already do what 90% of players probably can't. For those who can't already do it, it's a test that they'll have to put themselves against in order to earn the reward. tl;dr Bungie designed Challenge Mode to challenge the AVERAGE PLAYER, not the Elite top 1% of the player base. They aren't mind readers and can't predict the behavior of the best of the best. Edit 1: Changed the percentage numbers above to accurately reflect current PSN statistics. Also, muted one user for saying I provided no proof, then when I offered to show him some specifically, he said that he didn't need proof to know I was wrong, and then called me an idiot. I don't care if you disagree, just do it like an adult and we'll be fine. Edit 2: 450+ replies and trending. Glad to see the forum is interested in a different side of the content argument. Thanks to everyone who has traded opinions with me so far today. Lots of common respect and solid argumentation, proving the forums aren't all bad.

  • Dude you do realise that that probably only like 5% of people actually still play this game right?

  • I don't care how easy "Challenge mode" is, I just want guaranteed drops. So this actually makes me happy! And half of the "1 percent" are really just people that had RNG like them (like me too, damnit :<) Guaranteed loot drops makes stuff fair for everyone, which is really nice.

  • While I like your post and the underlying point, I don't know if that's necessarily true. Think about the end game structure a little bit. The normal raid is supposed to offer a challenge to the PVE players who have reached the end of the story and want to move to the pve endgame. The hard raid is supposed to offer a challenge to the pve players who have beaten the normal raid and have acquired the gear and skill necessary to try the raid on a harder difficulty. Challenge mode is supposed to offer a challenge to the pve players who have beaten the normal raid (normal challenge mode) or players who have beaten the hard raid (hard challenge mode) and want to try the final tier of endgame pve. From that I would say each mode is made to be a challenge for the people that fall into that percentage (or tier if you prefer) of players at that level. So challenge mode should have been made to be a challenge for the top players, not the average players You're right, it wouldn't be valid for a top tier player (hard mode completion) to say normal mod is too easy (because it wasn't made to be made a challenge for that caliber of player). However it would be valid for a top tier player to say the next step up isn't a challenge (because it was made to be a challenge for that caliber of player). Ask yourself this, why would bungie make the hard mode challenge mode based around someone who can't complete the normal mode?

the challenge is finding 5 other non-elitist players to accept you as part of the fireteam and get the raid started. then comes the disappointment of getting nothing but frigging mouldering shards from running the raid youve been chasing for weeks. but if i collect 20 shards i get a whole 2 shards as a reward... way to take all the joy out of a game bungie.

        • In glad the challenge is doable for all Bungie needs to start finding a way to rid this community of this elitist cancer that floods it. If you guys are looking for a challenge jump on COD and play the campaign thru on 'realistic'

          • Finished this last night with some randoms that we're all under 310. Everybody was happy and content. I do not understand the uproar about this. The game is fun. People tend to take this to another level and to relax and remember it's a god damn game. Have fun, and the fun is gone it usually means to take a break and try something new. Usually when you break away from it and come back you realize it's fun again.

            • Thought the exact same thing when it came out. I don't get to raid often, but when I do, we don't just have anyone grab Warpriest aura. Going to be interesting as the weakest part of our raid group may not be able to handle this.

            • I completely agree. Most people here fail to realize that the forums represent >10% of the total player base of this game, and those here are the ones who are usually the most dedicated to this game (tho they wont admit to it) It may seem like bungie isnt catering to you. But in reality most of us are in the very small minority.

            • I think people are forgetting that this is the first boss and probably Oryx is going to be HELLA hard to the point where people think its too hard. I don't know till we see what oryx has up his sleeve.

              • I did it on all three of my characters last night and got the mother load. I got 320 artifacts for all 3 characters, 320 rocket launcher, 320 sniper, 320 machine gun, and a 315 fusion rifle. Now, my Warlock is a 316, Titan at 314, and Hunter 314. I did it with a group that I had never played with before. We struggled with Totems, bad. Then when we got to Warpreist, we destroyed him. Almost killed him on the first glyph all 3 times. I am so happy with my new gear, and glad to see that I can take my "not so good" friends through it to help them.

                • I love this post. I'm in that top 1% and I'm not complaining about challenge mode. Sure it was easy for my group but thousands of other groups will struggle with this for hours. I love the loot and can't wait for the next one.

                • I completely agree. With my clan, we were finishing HM in about an hour or less. I never realized how great we worked together until I ran a few raids with randoms via LFG. It was almost an entirely different experience. Challenge Mode may not be challenging for my clan, but it will be to most of the random made Raid groups. Also, I really enjoyed getting 320 gear with minimal effort. :P

I always do it in two rounds with my usuals but if its lfg it is almost always 3-4 rounds to kill warpriest, so i can maybe see how it is challenging when so many rounds go by..... I guess the "elite" (lile me) expected way more
