A simple explanation of DPS for the people who think Sleeper is a good weapon

Alright, so since my brain hurts from all of the idiots who don't seem to understand the difference between DPS and Damage, I'm here to give you a simple math lesson. Let's keep this basic. I'm going to use the numbers that everyone has been throwing around lately. Most people are saying that Spindle deals around 72k unbuffed and that Sleeper deals around 132k unbuffed on Golgoroth. I'm gonna adjust those to 75k and 150k for simplicity and just say that Sleeper does double the amount of damage as Spindle (WHICH IS NOT TRUE BY THE WAY). So in one Gaze on Golgoroth, I can drain all 18 shots of my Spindle. In the same amount of time, I imagine you could get off maybe 4-5 shots of the Sleeper. I haven't tested this but based on charge time and reload, that's my estimate. However, I'm going to be super nice and say that you get off all 7 shots, just to show you how absurd it is that people defend this weapon. 75k x 18 shots = 1.35mil damage. Divide that by the 15 seconds of the gaze, and you get 90k DPS 150k x 7 shots = 1.05mil damage. Divide that by the 15 seconds of the gaze, and you get 70k DPS Not only does the Sleeper deal less DPS in a single gaze, it deals less overall damage. It also cannot be restocked as easily from the adds that spawn in between DPS phases. So stop defending the weapon already. It sucks, get over it! EDIT: So since I'm tired of seeing the same responses, I'll address them here. The "stationary target" argument: The fastest moving boss in the game is most likely the SABER shank boss, possibly the red shield-brother. If you can't hit either of these bosses non-stop with crits, there's an issue with your individual skill, not with any of the weapons. However, the SS damage is still dependent upon crit, just like almost every other weapon in the game besides rockets. So if you're missing crits with your spindle, you're probably missing crits with your sleeper, as well. The "situational" argument: In any given situation in the entire game, sleeper is nowhere near the ideal weapon. The ricochet is a complete joke, so unless all of the enemies are completely lined up, you'll only be hitting one or two with any given shot. Therefore, any situation with a lot of adds, a rocket launcher will still prove more effective than the sleeper. Why spend 5 shots to kill 7 adds when you can shoot 1 rocket to kill 7 adds? Does sleeper deal more damage than a rocket launcher? Yes. However, a rocket with max blast radius such as the raid launcher will take out a group of adds much more efficiently. As far as single-target non-crit damage, many have already stated that the swords are more well-suited for that type of situation. The "burst-damage" argument: Seriously? Just look at the math again if you don't understand why this argument makes absolutely 0 sense. Dealing higher damage, but taking LONGER to do so still means you're dealing less overall damage. That's why Damage PER SECOND is the end-all be-all decider for how efficient a weapon is. It takes in both the variable of damage and of how fast you can deal that damage. The "I'll use what I want" argument: ......I actually agree with this one. I never said anywhere in my post that people shouldn't use this weapon. If you want to use it, by all means, please do so. This post isn't about you. This post is about the people who are spouting nonsense and saying that the Sleeper is a high-tier end-game weapon that rivals the ghorn, the spindle, the ToM....and that's just not true at all. It's a rail-gun, though, and rail-guns are cool as shit, so yes please, use the weapon and look cool. Just don't sit there and try to say it's amazing because it just isn't. EDIT 2: Again, for the sake of having to repeat myself, I'll tackle another few "arguments" if they can even be called that. I have to say, it's honestly sad and pathetic the crap that people are trying to come up with to defend this weapon. The more arguments I debunk, the more insane and illogical the new arguments become. But nonetheless, I'll address them. The "swap weapons" argument: People are really reaching for straws on this one. So...I really thought my explanation of DPS was dumbed-down enough for even the most basic gamer, but apparently I overestimated the audience on this one. I'll try to put it in even simpler terms. When you have a weapon that deals maximum DPS, literally every second that you are not firing that weapon, specifically, you are losing DPS compared to the people who are using that weapon. That means that starting off with a sniper that is less DPS than the spindle, and then switching to a heavy that is ALSO less DPS than the spindle (just typing this, it sounds so absurd that anyone could even think that this would work lol), you are obviously going to deal MUCH less DPS than if you were just using the Spindle to begin with. Again, I repeat, for EVERY SINGLE SECOND that you are not firing the highest-possible DPS weapon, you are LOSING DPS. Not sure how much simpler of an explanation I can give. The "Well, Sleeper is 290" argument:......Sigh. So, for those who don't know, the Sleeper can be upgraded just like every other legendary and exotic. Mine is currently 305. Now, since I know someone is going to say "BUT WAIT!!! IT'S NOT 310!!!", my Spindle set-up and my Sleeper set-up both situate my character at 308 Light, meaning there is no difference between the Sleeper being 305 compared to 310 on my character. Damage is calculated based on CHARACTER Light level, not individual weapon Light level. And to put this even further into perspective, when I went to test out a potential PvP weapon for myself on the Dreadnaught, the weapon was 293 Light. Swapping a 306 heavy for a 293 heavy only dropped my Light level from 308 to 307, so don't be so dramatic when speaking about varying light levels on a weapon. The "Invalid because one is a heavy and one is a sniper": The value of an exotic is something that can, and should, be compared to that of every other exotic, since only one single exotic weapon can be equipped at a time. If that doesn't validate the argument, well, then you're just choosing to ignore logic and reasoning completely and you can't be helped. However, I already discussed the fact that rockets are still the better option when dealing with a pack of mobs since the AoE damage can kill them much faster than firing Sleeper shots individually at them, and obviously I've already proven that a sniper is more effective on a single-target mob.

  • Sleeper is good on majors, while spindle is a absolute beast on bosses with crits. Spindle is definitely the way to go

    • I'm not gonna say it's an amazing gun, because well, it lsn't, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Your argument comparing the SS to the spindle is pretty invalid because with that logic everything has less dps than the spindle (with constant crit shots) except maybe malice. The black spindle (with constant crits) does even more dps than The gjallarhorn (pre-patch) but that doesn't mean the gjallarhorn is (more like was) crap. Also, not everyone is a great shot with a sniper, so not everyone will be able to use all their ammo hitting a boss's head, such as valus tuark (probably spelled wrong) within the time to refill the mag, so it may be easier to take your shots slower and hit harder with the SS. I will agree with you that spindle is a better weapon for golgoroth (again probably misspelled) and probably the whole raid, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good gun. All of this is just my opinion, but I hope you can also consider it.

    • You're way too passionate about this. Just tell them that Black Spindle is infinitely better that SS and let the kids believe what they want to believe.

    • You could have just compared how long it takes for ss to fire one of its shots compared to x amount of shots of spindle but if this is the case id think ud manage a clip which according to your math means spindle is better for those stationary targets

    • It does do more damage than the Gally BTW. By a lot. As for spindle I'm not gonna argue that. But its not garbage either.

      • The only problem that I have with the spindle is if you miss a shot it takes 10 seconds to reload compared to any other weapon. At oryx I use the 1000 stare just for that reason.

        • By your example, it doesn't show that the Sleeper sucks; it shows that the sleeper isn't the correct choice of weapon in that phase of the raid or circumstance in general. The Sleeper may not be an optimal dps weapon, but it packs a can of whoop- ass in an individual encounter with majors and lower level ultras. So if your spouting about raids, you may very well be correct. Running around missions/quests...we'll that's up to the user's personal taste.

Correct me if im wrong. Considering the length of a hunters tether on golgoroth the SS would inflict more damage than the spindle while its active right?

        • No,you aren't going to get all 7 sleeper rounds off in 15 seconds(i just timed it and 18.58 seconds to empty all 7).That being said,I don't think I have ever been able to put 18 spindle rounds into golgoroth in the 15 second gaze.Seems like i usualy get like 13-14 off(that is if nobody takes 1 to the back of the head because they have to dance sided to side while shooting) and i hear"get out" when using the 1 gaze method.I also just did some testing of my own to get a more accurate difference between the 2.I bought a 300 spindle to test against my 299 sleeper.Made sure I had a legendary heavy and special with same attacks so when i swap out my light is still the same and went to visit Ultra Knight on the Dreadnaught I know these aren't the same damages they would do to golgoroth, but they can still be used for factoring damage during gaze. Sleeper hit him for14,155(3 shot kill) 15 seconds of gaze 6 shots would be 84,930 Spindle hit him for 7,824(5 shot kill) 15 seconds of gaze 13 shots would be 101,712 Does this mean the Sleeper sucks like the OP says?Absolutely not Would I use it at Golgoroth?Probably not. Since it does have high burst damage I think it's place in the raid would be at Oryx fighting the shade during teleport phase

            • God forbid people use a gun for fun instead of always using the best weapons, all the time, on every boss. The weapon does more than enough damage to be useful during the raid. Just because it's not the 'best' weapon doesn't make it bad.

              • There's actually a solid issue with everyone's arguments in general. Firstly being who cares, use a gun you like. Second, as a testing thing I tried a neat trick with the Simulant. The 5 ricochets can all hit the same boss if you shoot from above the boss... So... Golgoroth got 2 crits and 3 non crits (buffed plus weapons on a tether) 1 shot. I managed 4 of those and one grounded shot. That's 9 crits and 12 non crits... Do the math. Learn to use a weapon.. There's a reason it gives you ricochet and permanent piercing abilities.

              • What's the maths if I empty my SS into a boss and then swap to my 1000 yd stare with triple tap? If you run spindle you are limited to rockets or a machine gun for a boss. It's all in how you want to play. I'm sure if you factor in the options left to you overall damage would be closer than you think.
