Locking me out of content I've already bought really makes me want to throw money at my screen

I didn't preorder TTK because I wanted to hear feedback from others first. Especially after House of Wolves sucked so badly. I was so "pleased" to find that when I logged on this morning that most of the content I enjoyed before is locked out. Thanks Bungie, I didn't know this was a video game lease. I'm beyond pissed. Holding a game ransom that we already paid for until we buy the new content is not a great business model to retain fans of the game. EDIT: there are alot of opinions about the manner in which TTK was rolled out. Fact remains that alot of people who have been playing awhile and may not immediately upgrade (for whatever reason) now own an unplayable game that they paid upwards of $100 for. Whether Bungie CAN do this isn't really relevant. It's a matter of whether they SHOULD treat their fan base this way. The $40 DLC is significantly higher priced than most DLC'S in the gaming industry, so the surprise those who didn't pre-order received today with their game being gutted was just icing on the cake. Not sure I'll be back. What a complete disappointment.

  • I share your 'Shock and Pain'. It's like a beautiful girlfriend that you've met for a year and everything has been fine. And all of a sudden she tells you you're not rich enough for her. Alright, since she only likes me for my money and not me, then to hell with this relationship. BAD BUSINESS ETHICS BUNGIE OR ACTIVISION.

I'm really shocked by how many people in this god forsaken forum are OK with holding content hostage. We're not asking for free stuff. We just want the stuff we already paid for. How is that not wrong? What mental gymnastics are people doing to get them to think that's an okay thing for Bungie to do?

      • Wait, why would you want to keep old content? What makes anyone think that this game would be enjoyable without it? What else is there to do? If you like destiny enough to play the current content over and over, you should be perfectly fine with paying money for new content. All this crap about "bad business" on bungie or activision's part is nonsense. They made new content and adjusted the old to accommodate the new stuff. Pay for it, or leave the game. I seriously think this has more to do with people being stingy with their money instead of ridiculous pricing and design on bungie's part. If it were true that bungie was being unreasonable about pricing, nobody would pay for the content, but no—people are still buying. Psychologically, they see the purchase as worth the money, and see bungie's design as understandable and acceptable. They are fine with paying, and whether or not you see them as stupid, they will continue to be okay with it. Sorry guys. If you simply can't afford it, get a job, or ask for an allowance. Having your own money is an important part of life. It doesn't matter if you think it's fair. It doesn't matter if you accept how bungie/activision are approaching dlc content. It's happened, and you can either buy it and move forward, or not buy it and live with limited features. If you don't want to do either of those, just leave. Don't rant about it on forums, because what's happened has happened, and your complaints won't change that. Find a new game. Instead, what you could do is vocalize your desire for the next dlc to be a little more inclusive of individuals without the dlc. Look to the future, and reference the past and present sparingly, but don't think that discussing the "unfairness" of the current state of the game will get you anything, because as it stands, you're probably going to get nothing. I don't mean to sound cruel, I'm just tired of seeing the same copy/paste issue on the forums, especially when I know that verbal reasoning is unlikely to change that issue. If you disagree, that's okay, but at least try to consider what I've said before you move forward with this any more.

        • they tested waters with locking nightfalls at certain weeks after TDB , anyone who pointed this out as a unethical business practice was lynched by desticles on this forum , so logically they took the next step and locked out even more since it has the "community approval" , the best thing about it it set a great precedent for other devs so we can expect more of this bullshit in future and other games

Bungie may also impose limits on certain features or restrict your access to parts or all of the Program without notice or liability. You have no interest, monetary or otherwise, in any feature or content contained in the Program.

What's even more funny is you can't even access heroic versions of the vanilla story anymore. And they took out the strike playlist. vanguard tiger - vanilla 24 Vanguard roc - dB 26 Vanguard dragon - h.o.w 28 They could have easily just made 1 playlist say lv 40. But no. They get rid of the playlist that were paid for already. And give you some shitty lv 20 strikes with no rewards. You get rep? Wanna know what happens when you lv up with that rep? You get lv 40 ttk gear that can't be used. Dismantle it? You get currency for items you can't even buy. I can see it Next dlc you can't play v.o.g unless you own dlc. What's even funnier is the only legendary that doesn't require lv 40 is a sword....with ttk symbol I own the dlc. But even I find this very very wrong.

                • Nightfall is an end game activity. You need end game content to play it. It's reasonable I would say.

                •
Whether Bungie CAN do this isn't really relevant. It's a matter of whether they SHOULD treat their fan base this way.
What you should also ask is whether it is right for fans to expect a company to continue to support their online play despite those fans not contributing revenue towards the continuous operation of those servers? DLCs provide the funding in lieu of monthly fees, which i'm sure would go over SO WELL with this fan base. It's $100 for a year's worth of content. At the least, less than $9 a month if you were here from the start. Dirt cheap. And, let's be serious. They are restricting the content in order to lure you into buying TTK. If these coercive tactics don't work, so be it. You weren't buying any way. It is a little unsavory, and treads into the "feelings" territory. But, at the same time Bungie has got to make money. TTK's revenue has to cover the costs of operating not just TTK player servers, but everyone's servers.

Before we start let me say first off I am no "Desticle" I have not bought TTK and I have no intention to do so until I see review scores and impressions that make me feel its worth my $40 purchase. So I am missing out on the new content just like you guys are. I don't drink the Kool Aid. I think that $40 for a DLC is a joke even if it is an "Expansion". I personally believe I am one of the most outspoken critics on the forums regarding TTK and its various scandals. Then why am I bothering to post this you ask? Because I believe in fairness and the ranting and raving I am seeing in thread after thread is not fair towards Bungie. It is a HUGE overreaction and the bombastic claims of being robbed of content and being scammed is just downright idiotic. You have not had any missions, strikes, raids, or weapons taken away from you that you have purchased. You can still play all the TDB missions/strikes, HoW missions/strikes and you can certainly still play the vanilla missions/strikes. The same goes for the crucible. You still have every right to play the maps that you have already paid for in the classic playlists in the crucible. The only thing you have been locked out of is new endgame content like Nightfalls, Weeklies, Raid etc etc. That is not content that you bought that is a FEATURE of the game. A feature that centers around the latest content. When you bought TDB you bought the strikes, missions, gear etc etc and the Nightfall then took that content and featured it every week. Now that TTK is the latest content the Nightfall now features THAT content. So no you don't get to do the Nightfall because the Nightfall features new content. Content that you have not paid for. So please stop acting as if Bungie came into your game and pulled all of the missions and gear from your bleeding fingers and pissed on your Ghost. This is how expansion based games have operated for YEARS now. The new expansion comes out with new gear, new missions, and a new level cap. That new content is then featured front and center in every way and the old content is pushed off to the side. WoW, Diablo, SWTOR etc etc have followed this design for years. This is not new and this not shocking. They did it for TDB and they did it for HoW, but they did it on a smaller scale because they were smaller packages. TTK is essentially Destiny 1 part 2. So of course its impact on the day to day functionality of the game is gonna be MUCH more noticeable and much more profound. You paid for content. You got that content. You still have that content. You can still play that content. Features such as the endgame activities however will always be geared toward the latest content and if you don't have that content then you obviouslly cannot participate in the features that use that new content. The same goes for the levelcap as well. You paid for the level-cap to be increased in each of the new DLC's that came out because they were TIED to that content and you need that gear in order to REACH that new cap. They have now raised it again and have tied that cap to the new gear. Gear you don't have access to because you have not paid for it yet. So of COURSE the Vendors are going to be selling the latest and greatest gear. Do you honestly think that they should still be selling old level Vanilla gear like Shadow Price or The Devil You Know even though its been outclassed ages ago? I understand that you are upset that your options are limited now because the content you bought is no longer featured, but don't sit their and claim that it is no longer there or that you no longer have access to it. Because it is and you do.

Credit to Dizco Pat and I do personally own TTK

                • So what are they locking people out of who didnt buy the taken king? And if they are doing that they are more corrupt and messed up then i already thought about them. Im actually enjoying this game again so I'd say it is worth the 40. But it's not right if they're screwing people over who dont buy it

                  • I see this game's monetary system the same way I see MMORPGs. Everything is catered to the max level player, because that is where the majority of people will be. I do not expect a PvP season in WoW to cater to me because I only bought up to their second expansion out of 5. Is it a scheme, a conspiracy? No, I don't believe so. I just think Bungie has very ambitious views on Destiny, which you can see through the many heavily borrowed elements from mainstream MMORPGs. Is it right to do? In this situation, where it is not fully promoted on the box to the consumer, it isn't right. I think Bungie should advertise their game as a very end-game centric, online centric product, like most games akin to this genre. It is not like other shooters, such as Call of Duty or Battlefield that sell expansion packs to play more maps on, where you can jump right in and the only thing that has changed are weapon balances. Destiny is an evolving environment, and it would take more resources catering to the minority of players who aren't up to date with the game, which frankly is a waste of said resources when they can be used to further evolve the game at its current point. I can sympathize for you, because I know that there aren't many players -especially not familiar with MMORPG-like genres- that are familiar with this type of marketing. However, this has been happening since TDB, the very first expansion. Vendors have always sold gear focused on current end game, playlists and game modes have been locked out because of current end game scenarios, etc. I'm not saying its right nor wrong, its just how it is. The only problem I see, is that they must promote this game as 'THIS PRODUCT IS FOCUSED ON ENDGAME CONTENT WITH AN ENVIRONMENT THAT CATERS TO IT' type of message. Obviously not as blunt, you get my point.

But Destiny isn't the type of game you are used to. It's a 10 year plan, ever evolving, always online shooter. This isn't a game that you pull out after ten years and go for a spin. They can't possibly cater to every player who falls by the wayside with each expansion/DLC. Either stay current or be left behind. It couldn't be simpler.
