So after getting tired of resorting to using Gjallarhorn for literally every boss fight in the game i wanted to find a better alternative, or at least something that came somewhat close. The first weapon that come to my mind was the Thunderlord. I didn't think it would be better than the Gjallarhorn, but i thought it would be a close contender. After further investigation over the max damage each weapon could do with full heavy (7 rockets in Ghorn and 181 shots in thunderlord) it looks like the thunder lord will be doing quite more than the beloved Gjallarhorn. Here is the math. (correct me if i'm wrong my numbers may be off.) (all numbers were recorded from the boss Taniks, im not sure if damage varies from boss to boss, but if it does numbers should still be similar.)
Gjallarhorn - 7 rockets
Base rocket damage - 3148
total damage of all wolfpack rounds combined(12 wolfpack)- 3504
total damage of one rocket (including wolfpack) - 6652
total damage of one clip (2 rockets) - 13304
total damage of a max heavy Gjallarhorn (7 rockets) - 46564
Thunderlord - 181 shots
damage per bullet - 365
total damage of one clip(field scout) - 21900
total damage of a max heavy Thunderlord (181 bullets) - 66065
So now we know that a max heavy Thunderlord does more damage than the gjallarhorn, but what about dps?
Gjallarhorn - time per clip including reload 4 seconds ( 2 rockets per 4 seconds)
number of clips (4)
in a little bit more than 15 seconds the Gjallarhorn can dish out 46564 damage
Thunderlord - time per clip including reload 10 seconds (field scout + lightning rounds) 10 seconds ( 60 bullets per 10 seconds)
number of clips (round to 3)
in a little bit more than 30 seconds the Thunderlord can dish out 66065 damage.
So yes the Gjallarhorn has a higher dps than the Thunderlord, BUT i need to further investigate the Gjallarhorn vs. Thunderlord to calculate boss kill times (using full heavy then switch to same primary.) I will also calculate synthesis usage and see if 2 full heavy of ghorn can take down a boss(if it cant i feel thunder lord will be better.) But like i said before i will have to calculate the time it takes to kill a boss using all heavy then switching to an alternative and see wether the Thunderlord or Gjallarhorn takes down bosses faster. As of right now i can still not tell witch will be the better choice.
Please bump so others can join us on our voyage to find the superior heavy! :)
EDIT: I went and tested this on various Dragon strikes and came to find getting precision shots consistently with the thunder actually isn't a problem AT ALL. Now yes not all of my shots were crits, but atleast 95% of them were.
EDIT: go to my Xbox live account and watch my recent clip of you want to see 95% crit accuracy. Wasn't the best clip, but I'm busy maxing SGA so I don't have the time

3 RepliesShoot while jumping and avoiding damage vs attempting to stand still and hit a full clip of LMG as it bounces around. This is what people who make the OP's argument forget.
-
1 ReplyWith the changes to Ghorn's wolfpack rounds the Thunderlord will be a much more powerful gun, however the Sleeper stimulant may be better all around
-
3 RepliesI mean, this has been argued before. And I'm gonna re-post what I normally say whenever these things come out. ANY gun in the game, given enough time, can do more damage than Gjallarhorn. The problem is, NO gun in the game can do as much damage as quickly. I really don't see why people keep on posting this stuff.

Edited by Samurai Bovine: 8/17/2015 3:24:33 PMImpressive bit of math and theorycrafting. However, I think you miss 1 bit of crucial bit that math can't provide you. Range. Take for example crotas end. You can't reach crota from a safe distance using thunder lord or any other machine gun. Also take into account we discuss total damage and sustained damage. A rocket launcher fires once and delivers damage where as a lmg requires more time on target. So once again let us take for example rockets mcdickface. I can pop from cover at max distance and deliver 2 rounds from my gally and 9/10 deliver max damage. Where as with the lmg I must close to mid range to short range to ensure that every round of my lmg hits him in the face AND stand there out in the open as I attempt to unload an entire clip. Chances running solo that he's gonna give me that much time with blasting me to bits is slim. Chances in a group slightly better if my team isn't hiding like a bunch of cowards but not by much. In a perfect world were you can stationary turret without fear of retribution then yes Thunder lord does have a much larger dps output. Real (virtual) world application time on target will dictate how much dps you can truely do with that LMG, where as rockets are always pretty consistent (damn you horse shoes and hand grenades)!

1 Reply7 shots compared to 181. More chance to miss more time in the open etc. rockets are better for a boss in most cases over a machine gun. That said, using dif guns has certainly been fun as of late.
-
4 RepliesYou should readdress this when taken king comes out and the ghorn nerf hits. I'd be curious to see what the comparison looks like then
-
7 RepliesLike you said, Ghorn does about 40k damage in 15 seconds, and Thunder does 65k in 30 seconds. Give ghorn a synth and another 15 seconds, it will reach 80k... That more damage in the same frame of time ghorn > thunder
-
1 ReplyYou'll never get all of those TL rounds to hit the target. A Deviant Gravity with reload perks would probably work better.
-
1 ReplyBump! Ima go upgrade my thunderlord.... Lol Now is the thunderlord math w/ or w/o crit shots?
-
4 RepliesLmgs have always done more damage done than rockets. Rockets just have burst. And when the total amount of burst damage can kill a boss, it is more practical to burst everything down.
-
5 RepliesGood luck aiming and keeping sustained fire using tlord. I love the gun but having to worry about those 2 things make Ghorn far superior, probably even after nerf. I tried using tlord on skolas, couldn't activate lightning rounds once.

2 RepliesWhat about Super Good Advice for the shots that miss?
-
I use Thunderlord on Atheon and I love it to bits. Cant give you any stats but its pretty high for each critical and he doesn't move about. But it has to be Gjallarhorn for the other bosses. I will give it a try though
-
10 RepliesThat's implying you can hit every single round. You have to stand there and fire instead of popping a rocket and hiding
-
2 RepliesNone of this new. Community knew this, it's all about spike dmg. 3 guardians with a gally can empty all 7 rockets before 1 thunder lord clip is empty. Plus that thunderlord reload speed.
-
19 RepliesI thought everyone knew this? Machine guns > for single target Rockets > groups Everyone tends to use rockets though because they require less skill
-
2 RepliesThink of the dps, you can empty all of ghorn in about 10 seconds. How long does it take to use all of thunderLords? You really want to just stand there and keep shooting something, or get the damage out and be safe?
-
1 ReplyMuted
-
5 RepliesYes thunderlord does more damage, but it requires you hit all of the bullets you have, which is harder to do with machine guns than rockets
-
2 RepliesHi CrazyPerfection! Love this analysis!

Dragons Breath ftw
-
4 RepliesThankfully Bungie didn't nerf Dragons Breath because I use it....NEVER.
-
1 ReplyI used Thunderlord for the Archon Priest this time around and it was a lot of fun just rapidly slamming his face with arc bullets. It was very effective and very satisfying
-
Ohh god i remember this..... Back in the days when vault had just come out
-
6 RepliesI run Thunderlord all of the time, especially against Atheon or any Fallen leaders.

2 RepliesThunderlord club.
