So after getting tired of resorting to using Gjallarhorn for literally every boss fight in the game i wanted to find a better alternative, or at least something that came somewhat close. The first weapon that come to my mind was the Thunderlord. I didn't think it would be better than the Gjallarhorn, but i thought it would be a close contender. After further investigation over the max damage each weapon could do with full heavy (7 rockets in Ghorn and 181 shots in thunderlord) it looks like the thunder lord will be doing quite more than the beloved Gjallarhorn. Here is the math. (correct me if i'm wrong my numbers may be off.) (all numbers were recorded from the boss Taniks, im not sure if damage varies from boss to boss, but if it does numbers should still be similar.)
Gjallarhorn - 7 rockets
Base rocket damage - 3148
total damage of all wolfpack rounds combined(12 wolfpack)- 3504
total damage of one rocket (including wolfpack) - 6652
total damage of one clip (2 rockets) - 13304
total damage of a max heavy Gjallarhorn (7 rockets) - 46564
Thunderlord - 181 shots
damage per bullet - 365
total damage of one clip(field scout) - 21900
total damage of a max heavy Thunderlord (181 bullets) - 66065
So now we know that a max heavy Thunderlord does more damage than the gjallarhorn, but what about dps?
Gjallarhorn - time per clip including reload 4 seconds ( 2 rockets per 4 seconds)
number of clips (4)
in a little bit more than 15 seconds the Gjallarhorn can dish out 46564 damage
Thunderlord - time per clip including reload 10 seconds (field scout + lightning rounds) 10 seconds ( 60 bullets per 10 seconds)
number of clips (round to 3)
in a little bit more than 30 seconds the Thunderlord can dish out 66065 damage.
So yes the Gjallarhorn has a higher dps than the Thunderlord, BUT i need to further investigate the Gjallarhorn vs. Thunderlord to calculate boss kill times (using full heavy then switch to same primary.) I will also calculate synthesis usage and see if 2 full heavy of ghorn can take down a boss(if it cant i feel thunder lord will be better.) But like i said before i will have to calculate the time it takes to kill a boss using all heavy then switching to an alternative and see wether the Thunderlord or Gjallarhorn takes down bosses faster. As of right now i can still not tell witch will be the better choice.
Please bump so others can join us on our voyage to find the superior heavy! :)
EDIT: I went and tested this on various Dragon strikes and came to find getting precision shots consistently with the thunder actually isn't a problem AT ALL. Now yes not all of my shots were crits, but atleast 95% of them were.
EDIT: go to my Xbox live account and watch my recent clip of you want to see 95% crit accuracy. Wasn't the best clip, but I'm busy maxing SGA so I don't have the time

1 ReplyThunderlord oviously does more damage over time, but I doubt you just stand there shooting the boss . If you are looking for a quick fight ghorn is your gun. If you don't mind taking a little longer to fight him, use thunderlord.

How can u compare two weapons that are totally different
-
Certain instances tl is way better. Say um atheon. 5 thunder lords in the bubble in the middle wrecks atheon. And for all those saying u can fire gally and take cover thats very true but on atheon weapons of light and 5 in the bubble with tl wastes a gally team. Its not all about gally there r better weapons for other bosses as well

Edited by FL NIGHTMARE: 8/18/2015 8:52:30 PMIf your going to run the numbers use a prestige lmg its 150 round clip
-
1 ReplySooo then why is it the sidearm does more then thunder lord?
-
You aren't hitting 100% with an LMG.. with a Gally it's super safe 100% DPS.
-
Gally u can poke out and fire a rocket or two and get behind cover. Pretty critical when it's a boss that can kill u in one or two shots like in a nf
-
It's not potential damage- it's DPS that makes the gyllenhaalhorn so powerful.
-
The problem with Thunderlord is you may miss some of your critical shots or you'll just miss shots entirely. Also, it is exceedingly difficult to continuously shoot at a boss that is also firing at you as well as ads firing/meleeing you whilst you try to kill said boss. Gjallarhorn takes less than a second to aim and fire a tracking rocket which allows you to stay alive and avoid the bullet storm.

2 RepliesWith this logic atheon's epilogue would do damage than fatebringer.... In terms of usability, g'horn has the advantage. Thunderlord could even be replaced by high impact lmg's with field scout.
-
2 RepliesThe damage done by ghorn is received faster than Thunderlord. So for sheer dps ghorn has the win. Thunderlord just has more damage done overall.
-
2 RepliesThe problem was never nor will it ever be damage. DPS (damage per second) is what matters and I can almost shoot 2 entire mags of Gjallarhorn before 1 whole mag of Thunderlord can be shot.
-
Everything is better than the g horn it's my least used exotic
-
But it's gjallarhorn...
-
3 RepliesIf these numbers are right, Sleeper Simulant is definitely going to be replacing Gjallarhorn.
-
Try running corrective measure with ruin wings and heavy kills generate orbs on a defender titan and you can use the CM for the whole strike assuming rng isn't a bitch.
ruinwings give over 200 shots per heavy pick up
-
Machine guns are more efficient then Rockets, yes. (Specific comparisons may vary, granted) They also require you to stand much closer, and maintain fire though, as a tradeoff. The "turning point" of Rockets becoming the go-to boss killer was Crota, really. You can take his shield out with a machine gun, but almost invariably someone eats a boomer death, and the Oversoul whips out. After that, everyone basically went all-in on Rocket play.

3 RepliesIt all about dps man. Thunderlord doesnt stand a chance.
-
Were u dipped in dumb as shit sauce?
-
Doont let anyone whose grown galley spoiled tell you differently. I like an Mg as well. Moderate RoF. 2 heavy weapon ammo boosts (If possible) ruin wings/ expect more ammo.... Man! feel like im coming at a boss with a buzzsaw sometimes
-
1 ReplyBut are you going to be able to sand in the open to fire all 181 thunder lord rounds?
-
My thunderlord just sits in my vault. Not a big fan of it plus on arc burns i use my deviant gravity with surplus so i have heavy for days
-
-
Gjallarhorn essentially give you two rockets for every one you fire at a boss without any sort of exposure. And you can use it to hit stuff that is behind cover as long as you don't lock on

Maybe TL with precision damage can make a bigger difference
