I've seen many posts explaining how The Taken King won't make sense if you haven't done the Crota's End Raid. So I'm going to explain how you killed him during the story, not the raid.
There are two Crotas, his spiritual embodiment that connects him to reality, his senses, and existence and his physical embodiment that holds his soul into a physical and tangible form.
But when the wizards were trying to awaken Crota from his realm that exists out of space and time (like the Black Garden), you interfered during the summoning and destroyed the crystal while his soul was still in it, thus trapping him in his realm for the rest of his natural life.
So technically you killed Crota by destroying his soul, but since his physical form is in a realm outside of space and time, his physical embodiment survived, thus disconnecting the two.
Even though the raid is called Crota's End, you are just literally ending Crota. Crota is dead...sorta, but he doesn't exists within our reality since his physical form is trapped in another reality and he can't cross over to our reality. He is dead in our reality. You are just doing the raid to end his existence in his reality.

3 RepliesI believe Crota was killed at some point before we start our journey, which is why he needs to be resummoned onto our plane again.

2 RepliesSomeone reply to me so I can come back to this.

Great post

Edited by dngodsell: 8/13/2015 3:25:14 AMThen why did we bother killing him if he couldnt leave the hellmouth...
-
3 RepliesOpening of the trailer. "You killed his son... with his own sword". That was the raid.
-
I suppose it goes either way, but that would imply that the raid isn't canon at least as far as the Dark Below extends, depending on where you decide to take it personally. I for one feel like the raids are canon to the overarching plot.

8 RepliesMy question is what happened to Crota after the first attempt to retake the moon? I've heard that he was in the battle and killed many guardians. So why was he back in his realm and in need of a summoning? Why wasn't he present on the moon anymore?
-
3 Repliesin the story we prevented his body from returning to the moon to converge with his soul, after we prevent his body from returning we enter his domain when he is most vulnerable and destroy the remnants of his soul however if i've learned anything about hive i know hallowed hive don't have souls which makes them so god damn tough, its a scary thought to think that crotas body could become hallowed.................

Would make sense that the crystals in the raid and story were used as a sort of teleportation device like the vex use the gates as.
-
Correct
-
(Cough) NERD!
-
This is true
-
4 RepliesNice try but you are incorrect. You destroy the vessels that were being used to try and summon Crota to our realm. We then go to his realm and kill him.
-
6 RepliesVery thorough
-
5 RepliesHe's not dead in our reality. We just destroyed the crystal the Hive were currently using to bring Crota back. They can always build another crystal to become the next vessel for Crota's soul. Oryx is coming because of the raid. The raid is part of the story. Oryx wouldn't care if we just stopped the summoning. That's just a minor setback. But going into the dead sun realm of Crota and permanently ending his existance? That's fury worthy of Oryx, father of Crota. Also, apparently it will be mentioned in TTK how you're needed because you beat the raids and all that.
-
4 RepliesExcept for the line "you killed his son with his own sword." I think it's more likely that Oryx holds all Guardians responsible for the death of his son. Guilty by association.
-
The crystal is a door between realms. You stop the rise of crota in this realm, then you go kill him in his own. All you do it close the door he was trying to get through.
-
This is actually very interesting
-
2 RepliesWell that and the fact the wizards could make another crystal for crota.
