Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views!
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

4 RepliesWhat happens if you switch out to an unlevelled armour piece that takes you down to say lvl 30?
-
3 RepliesEdited by CP Vortex: 8/7/2015 5:29:03 PMHey Charlemagne, what happened to your vault?

I tried telling someone this yesterday and I was told to go watch it again as it's bullshit. Some people clearly don't listen properly do they. No pleasing some people on here.
-
14 RepliesThey did not flat out confirm anything in that fireteam chat. All they said that you dont start at 20, but that does not mean you start at level 34. You make a lot of assumptions.

Ya dont say..

meh, we gotta level a new subclass anyways so i don't realy care either way... though i might actualy play my secundary classes now that i don't need to find gear for them
-
Lol all these explanations in what should be a simple grandfather process. Losing more customers in the process. Bungie is doing a great job killing destiny!
-
it doesnt make sence tho. what if i put on unupgraded gear the night before that makes me 31 or something. will i be 31 or 34

3 Replieswell see my levels are technicallyyyyyy: Titan-141 Hunter-28 Warlock-29 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Can you tell who I main?

Source: go to destiny tracker, get your profile, look at "prestige level"
Edited by FlapjacksNsyrup: 8/8/2015 2:12:31 AMAt least I only have to stretch the content across 6 levels instead of finding a way to make it last 20!

"Subject to change" Angelsgrim

Interested to know what difference it makes? Personally I don't care either way.

Edited by RoseMyrtle: 8/8/2015 12:18:30 AMWould freak. Have two exo's and a female awoken. Edit: whoops wrong thread

Deej said you will start at the level you have attained. Considering level 20 is the cap and the other 14 levels are light levels it would be safe to say you will start at level 20.
-
for those complaining that it's only going to be 6 levels to 40 - here's a solution to your bitching.. delete your characters and start over.
-
So stupid
-
Kinda disappointed at this. It would take a few days at most to go from lvl 34 to 40. Would've preffered if they started us at lvl 20
-
1 ReplySo what happens if you have the gear to hit 34 but for whatever reason are wearing gear that puts you at 32 when the dlc hits?
-
Yay I don't have to work all day just to lol 20 lvls!
-
Finally, someone with a position of power can clarify for the Pegbois.

10 RepliesI played destiny and both expansions on my Xbox 360. I am buying the taken king for my Xbox one. Will I keep my characters on my Xbox one or have to start over?
