I'm curious to know what you guys think of Thorn in PvP. Is it overpowered? Or is it fine how it is?
I would like this to be a respectful discussion, so please stick to discussing and not attacking and degrading others, thanks
I'll start it off. I think Thorn needs a revisit. I was thinking about the other Exotic hand cannons. The Last Word is a two hit headshot if you are in hip fire, and then the gun is a short ranged weapon. The Hawkmoon is a two hit thanks to it's perks, but that does not guarantee a two hit kill every time. Thorn does not have a range problem, and is always a two hit kill, you don't have the uncertainty Hawkmoon has. It's much much better than the other Exotic hand cannons! (That does not mean that the other hand cannons are bad, or that they are not fun to use) Another point is that many many people use Thorn in Trials and IB, and for good reason. This gun is very powerful.
Your thoughts? I'd love to hear them.
Your rebuke? I'd love to hear it.
I apologize to the regulars on this forum who have seen posts like this many times. I'm not a regular, so I didn't know there were hundreds of the same discussion

1 ReplyMy thought is if im not great at pvp. Im about 50% wins @1.1kd+a. That plus a is a contributingl factor in winning. Thorn allows for assists and postmordem assists much easier than other weapons. I will use it when im having an off day. Other mida (outgun snipers with no lens flare) and blink shotgun works for my playstyle. So if you are "getting carried" or wanna contribute more use your thorn. Otherwise play with all the guns. Ive found I really like the spare change and 55a allfate and they arent even exotics!

2 RepliesAs far as I'm concerned, the Thorn users earned that gun! I think it would take me a decade to get the PvP void kills & that's just one of the steps to getting this gun
-
I dont mind it. Its not op from my perspective, despite being difficult to counter (although far from impossible). I just wish they would re-boost auto rifles to give players a wider variety of good weapons to choose from and customize their play style. Just because everyone uses thorn doesnt mean it has to be nerfed. That was the case with auto rifles, and look how that ended up.

Edited by Techno: 7/11/2015 1:08:48 AMPowerful, for the experienced. It does take skill, but after playing the full game you finally get that thorn, you're already skilled with hand cannons

1 ReplyI actually think it's fun. I use it and I am terrible with handguns ans bad at pvp in general and it barely helps me at all. It truly takes skill. I had some fun battles with thorn users in the iron banner sll week last week. When I faced those worse, than me, I won. But if they were better and quicker with the tough head shots, I lost.

3 RepliesIt ruins competitive nature of the game for many reasons. It cuts the skill to close to 0, I consider myself a decent player in the crucible and I grabbed the thorn (never used it in crucible) and went 2.8 and 5.67 casually laying down and talking on the phone. The burn effect shouldn't kill you as it promotes bad play since its gun is a perk based killing gun rather than gunplay. Plus it has ALL the stats, from RoF to stability, when you can stagger snipers across the map that's when things need to change in a gun.

It's a highly overrated hand cannon. I finally got one and I can't stand using it in PvP. 90% of the kills with it are from PvE. I much prefer using Red Death. It's a two hit killer. Just takes one burst to the head to lower a guardian's shield. And a second to to the head to kill them.

Overused Overpowered
-
Its op and will be nerfed. no gun should hit you twice from a distance then kill you from some dumb burn.
-
2 RepliesI like it, could use a Nerf so I don't have to hear people whining about it.(they won't stop unless it does get nerfed)
-
Damage over time is too op. Two headshot
-
1 ReplyNeeds a buff
-
1 ReplyHurts when touched. Also kinda weird looking. Roses smell nice though
-
2 RepliesMeh not a big hand cannon guy. I like MIDA way better than thorn.
-
I think all the exotic hand cannons need a range nerf especially thorn. The range on the last word is not what the stat says in my opinion and they're needs to be a higher damage drop off when shooting farther away for all of them.
-
1 ReplyI think Thorn is a handcannon, could be wrong.
-
I liked it when Trials first started but know it's annoying. It's not because it's overpowered, just to many people use it, TLW is more overpowered in my opinion
-
3 RepliesI'm tea bagging everyone that uses it
-
2 RepliesI commented on a post earlier that Thorn itself doesn't bug me, it's the mentality that bugs me. Not that everyone thinks this way, but many think this gun is required for success. They won't use other guns, because they're different or sometimes harder to use. Then, this mentality is reinforced when these people become so accustomed to Thorn that they struggle to get used to other weapons, even though they have the potential too.

1 ReplyI love it. Getting enforcer medals with DoT is the best.
-
1 ReplyI strongly agree with you. Mathematically, Thorn is a balanced gun. But screw all that stuff. Let's be real. When playing, both with and against Thorn, I don't feel nor think the other is OP. It's simply a good gun that fits it's niche, long-distance pressure. Kinda like The Last Word is a close range engagement monster. The problem isn't with the gun, it's with Bungie's form of balancing and damage dropoff, not to mention aim assist, etc. Same issue with The Last Word. Thorn is quite balanced among other exotics (and quite a few legendaries), as many guns can outperform it in situations where it should be best. TL;DR Thorn is balanced, Bungie's calculations are not

could use some tweaking. other than that its another gun to use.
-
I think it's over used and people just use it cause the claims of OP But really would like people to a with guns they like to play with not cause its claimed to be OP
-
Its overtuned in Crucible, I do think all the exotic hc's need to be tuned down a bit in pvp.
-
Noons use it for a reason

1 ReplyI usually could care less about seeing thorn in crucible, but I did run into an entire team using it in iron banner once. I'm pretty sure my screen was always flashing green. It just about gave me a seizure.
