Why do hand cannons out gun machine guns?

Because Bungie has no idea how real firearms work. Why do shotguns have a range of 10 feet. LOL Remember these are software nerds that have never fired a real gun in their lives.

My problem is range. Auto rifles should have better range then hand cannons or side arms. The longer the barrel the better the range. Hand guns are a close quarters gun.
