Interview with luke smith (lead designer) on the price for TTK

Opinions on the interview? for those who cant open link here are some Facts TTK Launches in three packages. $40.00/£40.00 for digital edition, which contains the new DLC and the Year 1 founder's sparrow, shader, and emblem. $60.00/£54.99 for legendary edition, which includes the original game, both Year 1 DLCs, and TTK DLC. $80.00/£80.00 for collector's edition, which includes everything in the Legendary edition, a bunch of different physical items, and three exclusive emotes, shaders, and exp boosting class items. Fans are pissed because the only way to get the exclusive shaders and emotes is by repurchasing old content they already have. START INTERVIEW Eurogamer: So it may seem like a small thing but you're adding exclusive content to the game - three new dance emotes - that players can't get unless they rebuy the main game and the two existing DLCs. Is that right? Luke Smith: "There is no way right now for you to get the new dance emotes without doing that. Those are Collector's Edition exclusive. We've set some stuff aside for that edition specifically to really make it appeal to fans who have engaged with the game already and also to people that will enter the game this autumn. Can you see that some fans are confused that you're asking them to buy stuff they already own? "Yeah, I can totally empathise with those people. But the Collector's Edition is a pretty cool package for people who want to pursue that stuff. Otherwise, surely what you're saying is that you would want to buy them separately, right?" Well, yeah. I would rather do that - pay a few pounds or dollars or whatever - than spend money on things I already own. "Well, we have nothing more to talk about regarding your opportunity to spend extra money in Destiny, other than The Taken King and the three versions we've announced." Is Bungie considering selling customisation items such as this separately? Or is that against the studio's philosophy for the game? "Rather than comment on the Bungie philosophy, here's what I'll tell you. If someone made a golf clap emote, I would spend money on that. Like when someone falls in the Vault of Glass. At the moment I bow when I'm trying to mess with them. So... I empathise with some of the things you're saying. " I feel like you should put some of these things that you are empathising with into practice. "We have nothing to announce today. We're reading the forums and the reactions to this week's announcements. We will continue to discuss player feedback with respect to the the game and Collector's Edition content." Taken King costs £39.99, which is almost same as base game. Does its content justify that? "I'm going to use American dollars, because British pounds are just foreign to me..." Literally foreign. "Indeed, an ocean away. So, purchasers get a big, rich campaign. Fully voiced cinematics and the story of what happens when an angry alien god wages war on a solar system, all with a satisfying conclusion. You also have a new subclass to pursue and unlock. We also have a bunch of new strikes - we're not yet talking about how many - and a new raid. We're showing two new PVP modes and four PVP maps this week, and it's a fairly safe bet we're not done yet showing things off. So I'm fairly excited about the value proposition. We're calling this a major expansion because it is. We're giving people a whole new place to go, that new destination..." I get that it is big but it is also the same price as the base game. That had four areas rather than one and more missions than the Taken King. Why is it the same price? "All I can do is answer that with the same thing I just gave you... We're really comfortable with the value we're giving to players this autumn. I believe that once we begin to share more, players will be even more excited. And for existing players it also comes with the Founder's pack with a new Sparrow, shader and emblem." Just not the emotes. "It doesn't because they come with the Collector's Edition." Final question on prices - "Is it also the final question on the emotes?" I'm not going to mention them again. I can't get them. "But you can if you buy the Collector's Edition." I'm not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again. "Ok, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit." Poke at me? "You're feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don't know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -" I do want them. I would buy them - "If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen." What I'm saying is that fan frustration is not because they don't understand the proposition. It comes regardless of how cool the exclusive content is. The frustration - and mine as a fan - is that the method of acquiring it requires me to re-buy content I bought a year ago. "[Long pause] It's about value. The player's assessment of the value of the content." Final question on prices - The Taken King and everything released so far comes at a significant price reduction for people who want to jump in to Destiny this September. All games do Game of the Year editions now - I understand that, that's not really an issue. But when you look at the reduction involved - it's barely any more than just buying The Taken King solo. "This autumn we want to have a moment of convergence where players like you and me who are engaged with Destiny can match up with people who are just joining in, who didn't pick the game up last year for one reason or another. "It's also important to remember the temporal valuation of content. If you played during The Dark Below, you were playing when there were Swordbearers everywhere. That's now gone and you can't recapture that now. Some things are being left behind as we move forward. It's the same with House of Wolves, right now, with the Fallen showing up all over the solar system. Those things are going to be less relevant as we move forward and the Taken are everywhere. "We don't have a way to go back in time and experience those things again. So the players who were there can say 'I was here when...' and 'I did it when it was new'. "I wish I had a way of better telling players that I was there back then. That I had a better way of embracing the legacy of my time with the game. This is something that we on the development team talk about all the time. It's really important that we figure out ways to embrace the legacy that players created in the first year... I'm not going to talk about how we're going to do that but it is right in the forefront of our brains. It's missing right now in Destiny." Edit: It really does seem Bungie/Activision only cares for the money and not the players Edit: wow so many replies! if we keep this up we might actually make a difference keep liking and replying guardians! Edit: keep it coming guys let them know you are upset!

I will still get the TTK but it wont be an overpriced crap like the legendary or collectors edition crap

      • Great Job alienating your loyal day one users. Good luck keeping me as a loyal customer moving forward knowing this is how you are going to operate, I love paying for things twice, maybe you should also start charging a subscription fee to play destiny so you can -blam!- us even more, I mean 60 dollars a month for online access, 60 dollars a year Xbox Live, 400 dollars for the console, 60 for every game , 20-30 dollars for each DLC, Thats nothing right..... Thank you for not allowing day one users access to exclusive content without purchasing something they already own, well done Bungie.

        • Well I guess that sums it for me, besides the constant disconnect problems I have had with Destiny servers, even though my internet connection is hard wired and topped out, Now I have to buy something that I already own in order to get exclusive items? Thanks Bungie. Great Idea, Alienate your day one users for a few extra dollars. Good luck retaining me as a loyal customer moving forward. Very disappointing after logging so many hours into this game.

          • The sad this is that this will be covered up/defended by the cancerous desticles and forgotten. People will make the same mistake they did with the previous two DLCs and buy The Take King. Will get 2 weeks (maybe 1 months) worth of enjoyment then be bored again. The cycle just continues because people forgive and forget too easily.

            • As a life-long bungie fan, this makes me sick. The interviewer asked questions that we were legitimately concerned about, and all Smith said was, "sucks to suck, you're going to pay for it and we know it". I will no longer be buying TTK after that.

I have not seen so much value since... since... Whew, let me get back to you on that /sarcasm

The logic behind Bungie... The reason why TTK + all previous DLC = TTK + $20.00: Maintaining "veteran" gamers involved in the game is not as profitable that gaining new players. Think about it, if Bungie was pricing the game and DLC at the same price that year 1 gamers paid, they would need to offer a game at $100.00USD ($60 for destiny, $20 for DB & CE, and the $40 for TTK). How many people do you think would buy this "overpriced" game without having it played previously? This is the problem with games that are not playable without the previous content. Are people going to be able to play TTK without having bought the previous DLC? Does it even make sense? Other games have the "advantage" that new people can come in at any time and start experiencing the game from scratch at the same time than regular and veteran gamers. (Example: Halo, Halo2, Halo 3, Halo Reach, etc.) One could start at Halo 3 without missing the previous content since it is a game by itself.. On the other hand, Destiny is trying to position itself as an endless game, in the sense that new DLC will continue to come up without the necessity of people loosing their current progress. This in fact comes at a price. Destiny won't attract new people without giving them the complete experience at a cheaper price that the sum of the previous installments. So they need to do this in order to be profitable. However, what I believe is the real problem is that: TTK + All Previous Content + Cool Stuff (which is mostly interesting to veteran gamers) = $80 Sooo... Cool Stuff = $20 (For new people entering Destiny for the first time) Cool Stuff = $40 (For people already invested in Destiny) This is what I think pisses people off... I believe that we can understand why they need to constantly sell previous content cheaper that the original price. (If not, I didn't make a good enough point trying to prove it). But when it comes to additional cool stuff, at least Year 1 players should get the option of buying them at the same excess price ($20). Or even buy them seperatly (shaders, emotes, physical stuff, etc.). That is me saying, "it's ok for you to go out and get new players, but don't punish your loyal gamers with higher prices". By the simple fact that Destiny will get more and more complex and will continue to evolve through DLC, Bungie should already know that their succes will depend on the loyal fan base and not the new ones.

I was reading through the comments to the article on euro gamers. One picked on the golf clap comment. The commenyvlinked a gif of a hunter doing the emote...apparently this was from 2013? Anyone confirm?

                  • If you think this is great you should wait for Thursday's weekly update. I guarantee Deej will either go with: 1. Completely ignoring this, despite the fact that a ton of these posts have been trending for days. 2. "We've been reading your comments and we appreciate your feedback. Please keep posting, we're listening!!!!" 3. Some sarcastic one liner about it, only for it to be ignored for the rest of the update. 4. He'll release a gif of the dance moves and that's it.
