READ THE POST BEFORE COMMENTING HOW MUCH I SUCK OR WHATEVER. I don't want a nerf to the gun, but since one is coming anyway (you know it is) we may as well make it one that doesn't break the gun or make it redundant
Like many of you, I would like to see a reduction in thorn use in PVP, but I am also able to remember the plight of the SUROS regime, may it rest in peace.
So now we are left with a dilemma- how do we weaken the thorn to make other guns viable while keeping it viable in itself.
Well, many people have offered nerf ideas but the vast majority have been the unimaginative damage reduction and any others would make it unusable.
There is a simple reason for why the damage shouldn't be reduced. If you lower the damage to make it a three shot hit, in any way, you make the gun pointless. A legendary handcannon would have the same effect but without taking an exotic slot
Instead, there are three things that should (in my opinion) be done to reduce thorn usage while keeping it viable
1- buff auto rifles again. By removing 1/4 of the primary weapons from the effective weapons pool, it's natural people would shift to handcannons. Scouts and pulses aren't effective enough to deal with the CQC nature of the maps, so handcannons were the natural choice. By returning the most popular weapon type to its former glory, you can wean people off the thorn.
2- reduce thorn's firerate. As of right now, part of its popularity is from the fact that you can spam three or more shots before your opponent has had the chance to fire two. If you reduce the fire rate, it keeps the thorn deadly but more skill based and means you have to pick your fights, as well as increasing the TTK. This also makes it the opposite of TLW as most fights will have to be mid to long range to ensure victory.
3- lower the reload speed back to it's original stat. This is a smaller reduction but means that you can't just spam bullets for fear of being vulnerable when you most need to kill your opponent. Keep the magazine size the same, but it means you can't just reload in an instant.
These three things are small enough to keep the thorn useful while limiting its usability in some areas. And it has minimal impact on PVE.
TL;DR
Buff autos, reduce thorn's firerate and reload speed. Keeps it strong while providing a weakness.
New ideas- why not reduce the aim assist or make the bullets have travel time like the vex? It'll make getting hits require even more skill

1 ReplyLol interesting that a slight increase to reload and fire rate was the buff given to thorn to make it useable. It is exotic after all. Therefore it should be a cut above legendary
-
1 ReplyI do want auto rifles back. I feel the bast counter to a slower strong weapon like a hand common is a AR that can fire/ suppress the opponent. Part of the reason it's op is you can kill most people before they get you so you can just stand out there and fire
-
4 RepliesI used it before the buff and thought it was over powered. lol Now the thing is just broken.
-
3 RepliesOp is pretty cool guy, presents idea that could actually work in practice and doesn't whine and cri

6 Replies#endthebitching
-
3 RepliesGet used to the Thorn and turn the page with this crud
-
1 ReplyI did 30 kills with a fwc chance hand cannon and with thorn hardly 20. Stop asking for nerfs. I'm using hands because of the auto rifles nerf. If bungie keep nerfing guns people will go away. You can say go we don't need people like you. Well like you can tell for all the thorns around in the crucible if people like me go this game will die. Right now you see people making post that say ( What game will kill destiny this year ) Lol people want to murder this game because of the nerfing and all the bs.

11 RepliesOmfg stop with these thorn posts people. GET -blam!-IN GOOD

2 RepliesNerf that then reign of the hawkmoon

3 RepliesNo thanks.

3 RepliesEdited by x Auto Pilot x: 6/13/2015 2:44:57 PMI'm all for your suggestions as I believe it balances Thorn without giving it the Suros treatment. Something absolutely has to be done because in its current state it completely destroys the flow of the game with so many people getting hit with the DoT and then running to cover for 4 seconds. Map flow becomes non-existent. However if they do nerf Thorn into the ground, I would not complain one bit. Unfortunately, Bungie is giving us no feedback whatsoever on the next weapon balance patch. Dont worry, they have a mystery "explosive" box that they would like to focus the weekly update on instead of relevant information.

27 RepliesIf you reduced the dot damage it would still stop shields regenerating and let you track behind walls. And exotics shouldn't be anything special in normal crucible anyway
-
4 RepliesAll nerfs and buffs to date should be removed from PVE. Kids like you cry and those who don't care, like myself, are punished in PVE.
-
13 RepliesStop being a baby. Last word isn't that hard. It's basically useless in pve
-
7 RepliesLower DoT damage? Maybe then you can't just shoot to the head twice and walk away.
-
1 ReplyEdited by Jacob Mason: 6/13/2015 1:45:25 PMThey need to stop nerfing one thing and buffing another in the same update, that's why it's so unbalanced. Don't buff anything, just slightly nerf hand cannons and then we'll see if it's still unbalanced
-
3 RepliesNo then ARS will be over powered and HC will be under powered

I posted a decent idea that will possibly enable a balance to be found. Nerf thorns reliability to 2-shot across the map. Hawkmoon is the "sniper" of the 3 exotic HCs (and yes, an exclusive.) It relies on luck to give you a 1-luck headshot plus a normal headshot... And my only complaint is reduce the firerate a little bit. If a headshot and 2 bodyshots is the default hand cannon killer, make these 2 headshot kill ones unreliable in some way. Hawkmoon relies on 3 bonus damage shots that could all be on the final round of a 13 round mag. Thorn relies on accuracy, so a decrease in stability is a strong option. The Last Word is a different beast, being full auto. The best way to balance it is to reduce its effective range. Stability and fire rate are key aspects of its identity, with both perks being about that. Reducing the 2-3 shot range of this weapon to close-midrange means it will still counter shotguns (at high level of play) but also not be a sniper. SUROS can't be buffed up too much because it's already got so much going for it. Amplified range while ads with great stability, glass half full and a heal factor. If you want to see this thing do strong damage again, some of its abilities need to be nerfed, or its effective range needs to drop.

16 RepliesWhy nerf anything. Buff some things
-
7 RepliesThey just need to stop the DoT from killing you. Just make it prevent shield recharge. That would stop players from 2 shoting you and then running away and letting the burn kill.
-
6 RepliesAny feedback at all?
-
11 RepliesWell, it could be changed so that when the user died, the poison stopped its effects. What do you think?
-
3 RepliesSignificantly reduce range
-
3 Replies1) Buff Autos 2) Increase Impact, Reduce DoT, Reduce RoF 3) Decrease Range Thats it.
-
3 RepliesMaybe we should nerf you.
