A Legendary Handcannon can kill in .73 seconds with three critical hits (This is the highest RoF-tier, including guns like Devil-you-don't). [1]
To compare, Red Death and Stranger's rifle can kill in .67 seconds with two-critical bursts.
Mythoclast kills in .61 seconds with five critical hits.
Clearly, Legendary Handcannons are balanced, with TTKs near other guns.
However. Moving to Thorn and The Last Word data.
The Last Word kills in .50 seconds with three-headshots, and .50 seconds with three hip-fire body-shots. But this isn't the scary part, it kills in .75 seconds with ADS body-shots.
A guardian's shoulder-to-shoulder hitbox is (conservatively) about 2x wider, and 2x taller than the head hitbox. This means that Last Word's Slowest TTK is only as much as .15 seconds slower than other gun's fastest TTKs.
The Gun's hip-fire bodyshot is the fastest killing primary weapon damage in the game. It surpasses the second-fastest (Vex mythoclast) by .11 seconds. To compare, Vex Mythoclast surpasses the third-fastest (red death) by only .05 seconds, which in turn surpasses the fourth-fastest by... again .05 seconds.
To put .50 seconds into perspective, human-reaction time averages at .25 seconds. Also, Corrective measure kills in all-crits in .50 seconds. Jolder's hammer/AAO kills in .40 seconds.
TLW is also extremely easy to use in the air due to its hip-fire perk.

In case you need a visual.
Thorn, on the other hand is broken for entirely different reasons
Falling in the high RoF tier, thorn's aggressive ballistics and DoT allow it to solidly kill in three-hits with body-shots. This means that its TTK with body shots is exactly equal to guns like Devil You Don't with headshots.
Furthermore, it has an aim-assist stat of 60 (which is improved even further with send-it), making it easier to aim than Hawkmoon.
The worst part is its two-hit headshot. With only .34 seconds of exposure, a Thorn user can have a player marked for a kill.
This is faster than any Machine-gun in the game, and can be accomplished with two-trigger pulls. This means that a Thorn user can actually strafe-in and out of cover, only needing to be exposed long enough to pull the trigger.
With other guns, like red-death, a player would have to at least be fully-exposed and lined-up with the target's head for the .15ish second burst-time.
With Thorn's Legendary counter-parts, you'd have to get three shots off, effectively making the peekaboo play exponentially harder (having to expose yourself 50% more)
To add on-top of Thorn's brokenness, it also delays recovery over a span of 4 seconds (regardless of Body Shot or Headshot). This means that if a player can even get one body-shot off before running to cover, they can keep a player at one-shot status for four whole seconds.
Also, the DoT gives players communicating mics the ability to tell eachother exactly where a player is, allowing for an easy arc-bolt/firebolt finish.
To add on to all of this, players planning to team-shoot a thorn-user will find that they will often get hit without being aimed at, due to the over-penetrating rounds.
Finally, Thorn's bullet drop-off with send-it is well over 100m. This is almost the entire length of most PvP maps.
So basically, Thorn could be classified as a Sniper-range gun.
No wonder Handcannons are more used than all three weapon types combined [2], the two exotics are ridiculous statistical outliers for their own weapon-class, and even other exotics

Edit: To be fair, I don't think the guns need heavily nerfed, they just need to be brought in-line with the-next best things.
Really, I think removing a lot of the aim-assist from both would really make them into the skill-guns that they are supposed to be. (Fact: Clint Eastwood didn't have aim-assist)
Counter-Arguments
Edit: So far, the counter-arguments have been the continuum fallacy of:
"If they nerf those guns, then they have to keep nerfing them all. Which ignores the fact that the closest thing to TLW is .11 seconds away in killtime, and requires headshots, and that after that, everything is relatively close to eachother in kill-time (in increments of .05, again all other guns need headshots).
The unfounded claim that:
Thorn and TLW are exotics, and are hard to get, and therefore have to be OP. Bungie stated very clearly that Exotics are never supposed to simply be Better than other guns. They are supposed to feel different and unique. Last Word is literally just a regular handcannon with more damage and a higher fire-rate. It even has aim-assist and stability. Same thing with Thorn.
And the popular belief that:
Thorn and TLW are Skill Guns that can only be used at certain ranges. All the numbers say otherwise. Near Max-stability is possible on both, generous aim assist on both (which is a stat that literally tells you how easy aiming is with a gun), and the ability to get faster kill times with body shots than the all of our generic weapons can with headshots.
Special mention of the vague:
Yeah, well those are just number, in real PvP, those TTKs never happen. To that I say, More Damage is More Damage If more damage is at all controllable, it will always be better. With plenty of aim-assist, and the ability to achieve fast kill-times on 4x larger hitboxes, there's no reason to believe that Last Word and Thorn have some kind of special drawback that makes their obviously, massively superior Kill-times any less relevant to this discussion.
And, Of Course:
"blahblahblah.. it is because of you that guns in this games are nerfed one after the other.."
I'm flattered that I personally have so much sway /s. Although, to be fair, this game's TTKs are all over the place, and there are lots of different guns that work differently. Therefore, it's only natural that we would have a lot of balancing to do, as there is an increased change of massive statistical outliers.

I agree on the whole with what your suggesting, each gun should be more or less effective in different situations, eg auto rifles spray and pray for people who cant aim at range having reasonable effectiveness, shotguns should be 2 hit close kills from full and and fusion rifles should be close range 1 hit kill requiring charge, higher impact longer charge should be 1 hit at a slightly better range ect ect. Hand cannons should be effective at close to mid range lossing damage and easy aim at distance, ect ect.... but hey this is just what I think would balance things out a bit.
-
6 RepliesNo. Its just that u suck. I can counter TLW with a legendary auto rifle.
-
2 RepliesI feel like you have no idea what youre talking about. you didnt mention once that LW has absolutely horrid range. scout rifles and autos are your best friend against LW. LW capitalizes on dueling, usually 1v1 or 1v2 if youre lucky with it. it only has a magazine of 8 and even firing from the hip isnt all that easy if someone is running away or using a weapon with a greater range. people with thorn can easily mow down a LW user because of the range and people with MIDA can wreck LW users as well. regarding LW rapid firing, keep in mind you only have 8 bullets and the recoil from rapid firing makes aiming rather difficult. unless you land 3 good shots on a person theyre not going to die and then you gotta reload which actually takes a considerable amount of time and leaves a LW user extremely vulnerable.

bungie should hire you.. You get it.. I think the people doing the math equations in the game are utter morons. TLW and Thorn are hand cannons but shoot like a sniper rifle, with higher damage then a sniper.. They are bullshit weapons.. If they don't fix them (the bastards don't seem to be) They need to re-fix the vex so it kills as fast as before and fix the range so I can kill a mother-blam!-er from 2 football fields away like the thorn and TLW can. When I get a kill and the person sitting there wondering wtf happened. I want them seeing me running around and nowhere near the spot I killed them in.. That's how it is with thorn and TLW. They are scrub weapons. Cheaters use them.. Today starts the trials of thorn.. Trials would or could be fun.. But every dicksmoker is using a thorn.. Its sad cause the people I play with are leveling up their thorns in hopes to compete against them.. Now the rounds will be 100x faster with no skill involved.. Just sit back and shoot.. better yet, shoot through a wall and still get kills.. I've seen it happen.

If you really did the stats to that then bungie knows what they need to do

Hey man, if you put all this work into it, I can finally believe it with actual facts
-
The only reasons I complain about TLW are someone I feel unskilled just killed me with one, and I'm not that good with the weapon myself. I wish the weapon wasn't so accurate when holding down the trigger, I honestly feel the weapon should only be able to be fired by a pull of the trigger and not full auto. But it is what it is in the game. I do feel auto rifles should be viable again. I don't see why auto rifles and fusions rifles were needed the way they were, while other weapons are still strong as -blam!-. They are even coming out with a Mayhem Crucible mode that will have a shit load of supers being used, yet my auto rifle and fusion rifle was needed considerably. The game developers wanted OP weapons and abilities in the game, the equalizer wasn't supposed to be nerfs, the equalizer was supposed to the fact that your opponent could also have OP weapons and abilities. Shit, they needed fusion rifles so bad, they don't even feel usable anymore in PvE. I feel more comfortable running up to a Ogre major (angry and void burn mods) with my void shotgun, then I do sitting back and firing my void 365 77 Wizard with hammer forged and rangefinder.... Like seriously, i used to be able to snipe hobgoblins in the VoG before their immune shields activated with my Wizard, no it takes like 2-3 really well placed shots while I'm taking damage from other things. My PoE fusion rifle feels shitty as hell. It has disciplinary, but it doesn't even cause cringe sometimes when before the nerfs a fusion rifle, rightfully so, would have caused an enemy's head to snap back at close to mid-ranged with a well placed body shot. Again now all I can do is rely on trusty shotguns. Long rant short. No more nerfs, just but my auto rifle and FUSION rifles again...at least for PvE. I'd like to feel like I have other options to use other weapons that I enjoy using.
-
If you really want to fix the last word, remove full auto. That will still make it OP as shit, but what already takes skill to use will take even more skill to use.
-
2 RepliesWell I have TLW and I suck with it.
-
1 ReplySounds like another butthurt loser. At anything but very close range TLW sprays like a mother -blam!-er. Yeah, pre HC nerf you could snipe with the thing. But now it is very difficult hit someone more than once at range. The range on Thorn needs to be dropped and damage needs a very slight debuff, it shouldn't be able to kill in only two head shots.

Edited by Kutthroat VII: 6/19/2015 12:03:34 PMIdk if it's impressive or quite sad to go so far to prove that the Last Word is an overpowered weapon...
-
2 RepliesEdited by ???: 6/2/2015 5:24:27 AMI enjoyed reading this as it was a completely competent opinion that shows mathmatically how broken these two handcannons are truely. The comments, however, are a complete shitfest of guardians who either enjoy using the broken weapon or want to argue because numbers don't make sense to them and feel insulted, so they feel that they couldn't compete without it and their trusty shotgun. This is also a reflection on the dark souls community, but people who rely on these things in that game have troubles beating the tutorial due to the mindset of " what's op, I'll use that because I can't be bothered trying."
-
2 RepliesNo. Stfu. No more nerfs. Buff autos and fusions and thats it. Leave everything else alone
-
8 RepliesPretty solid argument against thorn but as for TLW, fire rate and impact are not the only stats on that gun. Bet you didn't know it already has the worst aim assist and equip speed available on hand cannons with a recoil to match. To compare, Necrochasm is the fastest killing auto rifle. Would you recommend that gun to someone over Suros? Which btw is the slowest killing auto rifle. TLW actually takes a decent amount of skill to use. I remember the last time xur sold it there were so many people running around with it in crucible shooting at me, and there I was taking no damage whatsoever lol. Fix the glitch or maybe remove the extra precision damage altogether, leave the rest alone.
-
I couldn't get through the post.
-
Thorn nerf? Definitely. Last Word on the other hand? No. Thorn is a really easy gun to use. Any fool with half a brain can be good with The Thorn. Last Word on the other hand needs more skill. You said Last Word is easy because of its hip-fire perks but it's not. It took me 2 weeks to learn how to use it properly and I'm still learning how to master it. There are people who run around like idiots with TLW and can't hit for shit even if someone's life depended on it. Last Word needs some skill to use properly and range is terrible on it so it is fine. If anything, fix the glitch where you deal bonus damage whilst Aiming Down Sights. You shouldn't be able to kill in 2 headshots. Thorn and Hawkmoon are literally snipers. They do deserve to be nerfed.
-
3 Replieswho the hell gets 3 fukin headshots? are u serious? no it doesnt need a friggin nerf
-
So you want to make it not the last word? Any sniper kills quicker.
-
3 RepliesI can't wait till the Hawkmoon drops on XBOX and you get to experience getting killed in one headshot. Seriously, there are people who are better at games than you are and if you can't handle that then you need to move on.
-
Very sound argument. I think there should at least be a game mode where no exotics are allowed. I think that would satisfy a lot of people. However, this IS a loot based game, some guns are MEANT to be OP. I think it makes the people who don't have said gun wanna quest after it, so they too can see what it feels like to wreck the crucible.
-
Jeez. Might as well write a novel
-
And that's why I always have the last word.
-
5 RepliesNobody seems to grasp the concept of an exotic
-
Doesn't matter how "balanced the weapons are there will always be one "op" gun everyone will flock to. If all weapons had the same ttk majority of people would change to red death or stay with thorn so still no diversity. I don't have a problem with powerful exotics as I usually kill them 50% of the time when I use a legendary weapon. Also not every weapon is good to use in PvP anyway just as not all weapons are good in PvE. Getting long shotted by shotguns frustrate me more than op exotic primaries. And guns like the last word are powerful indeed but not the easiest to use. I've seen people miss all 8 shots and get rekt lmao. And thorn just strafe and most people will miss a few shots. To each his own I guess. Btw I usually use truth as my exotic in crucible unless I see thorns then I pull out an exotic primary. Queen breakers bow has been fun to mess around with too.
-
3 RepliesYour argument is sound. Honestly just ignore all the hate comments. This guy is right and you know that these weapons are op. You can't just say "learn to counter". Yes I know it is possible to counter but I shouldn't have to formulate a strategy and put more effort than needed in order to defeat a guy who doesn't need to try as hard because he has a broken weapon.
