Simply change the Mark of the Devourer perk so that damage over time does not affect Guardians. Would this not solve the biggest issue with this weapon?
Edit.
I've received a few other interesting ideas in this thread:
● make it so mark has a chance of activating not guaranteed.
● only the first round does DoT
● have an armour perk that denies DoT.

56 RepliesEdited by Wheeze: 5/14/2015 2:01:07 PMI try to be a chill dude. I try to treat people with a modicum of respect, because the forums are a cruel and horrible place, rivaling the YouTube comments section. But. I just can't. Not today. Not after the 100th "Nerf Thorn" thread that I've seen this week. Every day I see this nonsense, and normally I try to give a reasoned, thought out response about Thorn's respective strengths and weaknesses and possible counters. But, I just can't fight it anymore. I can feel the transformation occurring. It's like I've been bitten by a werewolf. Or a zombie. Or a zombie werewolf. I can feel the sickness... spreading... Taking over, consuming me with insatiable hunger... Run, you fools, before it's too late! Arrrrghhhhhaaha Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Thorn is fine. All of you, just shut the -blam!- up. The DoT is the only thing about Thorn that makes it exotic and you want that nerfed? That makes you an idiot. Why would anyone use Thorn if the DoT didn't affect guardians? Why would anyone use Thorn if the DoT wasn't lethal? Why would anyone use Thorn over literally any other top tier exotic primary? That's like saying Vex Mythoclast should have a charge up time in PvP instead of firing immediately, or TLW loses its auto fire, or Red Death shouldn't heal, or Bad Juju won't refill ammo, or Truth stops tracking. Whoever is spreading this ridiculous idea around is a bad person, and they should feel bad. I have a great, brilliant idea: if your enemy is using Thorn, have you tried -blam!-ing killing them first? Maybe people could start spreading that idea around.
You know the worst part? Thorn could always two shot, before it was buffed. You idiots just never completed the bounty because all you ever heard was a) "waaaah the bounty is too hard" and/or b) "waaaah I used Thorn for 5 minutes and I think it sucks, even though I haven't unlocked all the perks I'm passing judgement on it."
I think it's rof and range r the op things

Only cause the damage over time if its a percision shot.

As a thorn user I don't mind this idea. I use it solely because of looks.

28 RepliesEdited by TeslaDoc: 5/14/2015 6:18:37 PMRepost from another thread I replied in: Thorn puts out great damage and full DoT at short, medium and long range. DoT doesn't scale with distance. Check. Thorn is a primary that is never short of ammo, unlike special weapons. Check. Thorn has good impact, stability and RoF, unlike special weapons which never have all three. Check. Thorn can hold 9 rounds, over 70 on total. It starts the game with more ammunition than all the special weapons. If it takes, say, 3 to 4 shots per kill, then you can possibly kill 15 people without reloading your starting ammunition supply. This is better than the special weapons. Check. Because Thorn can be deadly with 2 or 3 shots, you don't have to stop for ammo nearly as much as other primaries and all secondaries. This keeps you moving, which is key to survival, and also keeps you away from ammo crate ambushes. Check. Thorn has good impact, stability and RoF, unlike almost all other primary weapons which never have all three. Check. When you ADS with Thorn, you still have excellent peripheral vision, which helps situational awareness. Not so with many other weapons. Check. Because Thorn competes with all other primary weapons and all special weapons, you don't have to switch weapons, which saves a ton of reaction time. Check. There is full DoT for both body shots and head shots. DoT doesn't scale, depending where you hit. Check. Full DoT is applied even though the Thorn user dies before DoT is over. Supers pretty much end if the user dies. Check. Other stuff in game that causes DoT (like Nova Bomb, Dragon's Breath "grenades" or some hand grenades) can be avoided or you can walk away from it and the DoT stops. You can't run away from Thorn DoT. Check. The bullet from Thorn touches you and you start to burn to death. Your HUD is affected which is somewhat disorienting. If you get out of the way before you die, you are combat ineffective until the DoT stops and your health regenerates, unlike every other weapon. This can take up to 12 seconds, which is literally a lifetime in PvP. Check. Thorn is OP. EDIT: clarified reloading comment.

3 RepliesI have a simpler one. Use your thorn if you can't do that it because your too bad at PvP to get one. So the reality is your more mad at being killed by a gun that your not good enough to obtain. You also probably die just as much when your in a match without a thorn user on the other side.

750 replies out of a community with hundred of thousands!? Wow. This thread is gonna make waves

Edited by EcKo_ThUnDeR: 5/14/2015 6:01:31 PMWhat you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. I can't believe that someone of your education is allowed to use a computer. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Fight fire with fire.

Dot doesn't kill in pvp there you go

No you may not.

1 ReplyYeah let's get rid of all exotic perks when used against guardians! Jesus Christ... What a horrible suggestion! Yeah make mida not work for guardians and gjallahorn not track so just an average rocket launcher , while we're at it let's just make all exotics legendary? Because that's your suggestion, take away the one thing that makes it above the rest
-
Your just bad deal with it
-
I would buff the dot damage and add a new line to the description if I was bungie. "Thorn feeds off the tears of it's enemies"
-
Nah. They just need to lessen the crit damage.
"To rend one's enemies is to see them not as equals, but objects—hollow of spirit and meaning." - 13th Understanding, 7th Book of Sorrow
I see no problems with Thorn not being an "equal" gun as it is in the flavor text even .......
-
No. Where Bugie failed is in not giving armor different defensive perks. There should be a helmet perk that nullifies DoT. A chestpiece perk that reduces blast damage from either shotguns, gernades or rocket launchers. And so on: every offensive power should have an equal on defense. Then, when too many are using shotguns, for example, everyone will switch on that perk = balance.
-
There is no Thorn problem.
-
Lulz muted this fag so fast!
-
Lmao only the first round does dot as is. The burn has to stop for it to be replied.
-
2 RepliesOr, just shoot the guy with Thorn in the head. Been doing it well with my Mida for a sec now. You all should try it. If you can get the drop first they'll die, just like every one else using weapons other than Thorn. Shoot first, aim true, and they fall. Doesn't matter what gun they're holding.

3 RepliesThe only nerf any exotic needs is to actually match it's stats. Thorn and TLW both have high RoF, yet they hit like FB or harder. TLW has a pathetic range stat, yet it can 2 shot across the map. That is where the problem lies. Well, that and a broken perk (TLW). And yes, they do need fixing. It's pathetic when you drop into a match and everyone's running around with bitch guns. If they don't need a nerf, prove it. Swap out your exotic for a legendary. Show me that you have the skill that you assert these guns require. I guarantee your KD goes down, along with your overall score.

Exotics are ment to be powerful in a unique way , funny how people cry about suros and wanted it nerfed now everyone crying about it like come on let the game be it , bring suros back to its real stage
-
It doesn't need a solution I have thorn and I counter attack a lot of times with my scout rifle or vex , so I mean if I know how.to kill a thorn user idk what to tell you maybe improve your pvp skill
