This is something that has come up over the last few raids, both as "well that's the first time anybody told me not to use it" and in the form of people just ignoring facts and trying to be awesome.
So here's the deal: I get that Gjallarhorn is awesome. I get that it wrecks Atheon. IF more than a few team members are using it on Atheon.
I can't tell if it's hard-core Gally love, lack of experience with the vault (or math), or something else I'm missing entirely. If you hit him with rockets or grenades, he moves. That means that potentially four other players, hopefully hitting for 18-20k *per shot* (with weapons of light and Ice Breaker or Black Hammer) are missing. So sure, you get off a few rockets depending on how good your relic/oracle team is, but you also just cost the team well over 100k in damage from missed critical hits.
So put away your pride for a second, think about the team, and try dropping him in one pass instead of with rockets (again), on the third pass.
Just a thought. Either way, keep raiding. :-)
Edit:
Some people are comparing Gally damage to sniper damage as a 1 to 1 comparison. i.e. I can do 30k per shot with Gally, therefor I'm putting out 120k damage with my four rockets which is more than you can with your sniper.
Roger that.
BUT, you are forgetting that it's not just one sniper missing. Let's say two of your snipers are awesome and never miss even when Atheon is dancing (this is for those of you that seem to think it's silly I can't crit Atheon while he's dancing), the other two guys miss their blackhammer shots...your 30k Gjallarhorn actually just cost us 40k worth of sniping damage. And if you had fired a shot there too instead of that rocket, the total damage for just that one shot would be in the 60k range. Multiply that by any sniper of your choice, and you've just cost the team a one pass kill.
Wheeee...

Heavy machine guns ftw on atheon

6 RepliesI've found that what works best is one guy shooting NLB, while all other players, including the relic holder, dance around him to cheer him on. I usually down him in in 1-2 shots, depending on the types of dances my allies are using.

9 RepliesEdited by puppyk1sses: 5/7/2015 3:35:25 AM1 Gjallarhorn = the person gets 1 warning then kicked 2 Gjallarhorn < damage of everyone sniping 3 Gjallarhorn = damage of everyone sniping 4 Gjallarhorn > damage of everyone sniping 5 Gjallarhorn = world record-ish killtimes

5 RepliesSeriously it's not hard to hit him while he's moving so I don't get why there is even a problem. It's not like he teleports around the room when he gets hit with rockets. Even using the black hammer it's still easy to keep getting presicion hits. Maybe the problem isn't the rockets maybe it's your aim.
-
2 RepliesAbsolutely nothing can take him down faster than Gjallarhorn. If you want to use the most efficient method, don't use snipers.
-
Yeah but u can hit him nearly 15+ with blackhammer so this causes 300k damage i guess so why should anyone use rockets??
-
I run fatebringer- black hammer- super good advice for atheon, too easy
-
3 or more gjallarhorns will atheon in a single teleport. With an lfg team if you have a gjallarhorn you should probably use it.
-
2 RepliesIf you're not running a team of 6 Titans that run up and punch Aetheon in the belly button, you're playing the raid wrong.
-
It took us three rounds because two guys were cowboying it with rocket launchers. The other three of us couldn't land crits regularly. Which really sucked for me because I was trying to use a Black Hammer which is usually awesomemode on Atheon because you can get off 12+ shots without reloading.
-
I downed him in one portal run using black hammers and a variety of machine guns in an lfg group. Was awesome!

5 RepliesGood point, and one I was never told before. But what if I want to use Praetorian Foil as a special weapon, should I use Thunder Lord or some other machine gun instead?

Sometimes he stays in the middle but sometimes he goes to the sides were his crit spot is hidde i hate that shit When a dumb ass trows a granade or rockets him if i was the fireteam leader i would kick soneone out!

1 ReplyNot if everyone has a rocket launcher with tracking. We do him in one shield on hard these days.
-
2 RepliesIf the majority of the team is using rockets (gjallarhorn in particular) you can easily drop him on hard mode after only one teleport.
-
1 ReplyI use corrective measure and black hammer and my team usually does it in one portal
-
I completely agree.
-
1 ReplyYou know hen it is great to Gally? When you are outside and have already cleared the supplicants. I actually got the kill while the team was retrieving the next relic.
-
1 ReplyPretty sure Gally does 50k a shot not 30k
-
1 ReplyNot my fault if the shitty snipers cant hit him when he moves. They can deal with it
-
I can't stand when there's one fkn schmuck that just has to show off his Gjally and use it on Atheon even though everyone else is sniping. Iv only been in one group where the consensus was tracking rockets & while yes, he was totally annihilated, we lost 2 guys because they shot other people in the back. Everyone has picked up Thunderlord. Start with field scout, switch to perfect balance so the first clip has both and fkn melt him.
-
1 ReplyYou have it all wrong... thunderlord vs Atheon rip Atheon
-
1 ReplyDon't know if i can still find the video... but a full team of gallys melted Atheon before he made it down the steps. Not defending using rockets at Atheon, just thought that was awesome.

Well then communicate. Have one set rocket phase (it should be phase 2) and no rockets or grenades past that
