I just want to know the real story behind the game change at the last minute. Not rumor or conjecture but actual reasoning. Was it because they wanted to spread it out to sell more dlc and sequels? Was it something technical or legal? Was the original game to ambitious and they couldn't deliver yet?
Edit: I guess we won't know unless they tell us. Thank you for all the constructive posts. It's appreciated

If it did experience significant rework, as it looks it did, I'm sure it was creative differences between Joe Staten and Activision. Seems to me Activision would favor the more accessible story we have with Destiny right now, something that would appeal to a larger demographic (read: younglings). Maybe Staten wanted something a little darker and more complex, then left when he realized he wasn't going to win that fight. Regardless, when one of your longest standing writers leaves just before your new franchise is supposed to launch (as does the music behind the game), something smells wrong. Happily for me, Staten is back working on more Halo.

1 ReplyThey didn't want to pay the lead writer what he deserved so he left and with it everything he wrote I assume. They can't use what they didn't pay for.

3 RepliesBecause there was extra money to squeeze from us. Bungie is ran by greedy, misleading, bean counting, anti-gamers. The dishonesty they exhibited with this game is downright vile. The Destiny "story" we got was so hollow and vague, at this point buying destiny for $60+35 makes me feel like I was stolen from. I can't imagine giving Bungivision ANY more money. They lied enough to push me away. Bungie didn't put together the end product, Activision did. I don't care what anyone says, Bungie let Activision make the calls and the game we got reflects that decision.

1 ReplyI heard that someone quite who was in charge of the story writing

1 ReplyDont be surprised if you see more games come out with this business model. Make your game completely and sell it for usual 60$ retail but dont allow the entire disk to be accessible. Charge more every couple months as DLC (which btw isnt DLC if its already there) until your sequel is released.

A very good video you might find interesting.

Edited by Baackstrom: 4/27/2015 7:14:11 AMI see many say that the dlc was cut out, i think they all ready had plan the dlc a time a head. But the game become to big and advaced, developers like joe staten put his life into the game, he's an artist. But the one that paid them don't care about the "art", they care about the proffit. And they wanted the game out and start making money. And bungie had to stress the "home work" the night before. That's my tought Edit; the teen-rating can be a part of the game changi g to.

This topic is screaming... Boycott the greedy bastards!!

48 RepliesSince there is no definitive answer I choose to take what I know to be fact and apply that. Fact: the lead writer dips out prior to release Fact: Activision is the publisher and are greedy pricks Fact: the game was cut apart and resold as dlc; I say resold because technically all dlc's to date are on our disks already. Summation of facts: Bungie had internal problems that directly affected the game and then realized they could recoup/generate extra funds by reselling pieces of the game rather than create new shit like most companies do. Factor in Activision's role.....where there's a dollar to be made they'll find it. That's my personal thoughts.

Activision said, "that's a real awesome game you have there Bungie, but I think your missing out on a few shekels. How about we piece this game out, in multiple DLCs, for the most profits." Bungie said, "okay boss, whatever you say." There's the missing Destiny story in a nutshell.
-
I think they simply wanted to cut stuff and do more with less just like every other business out there. Its no surprise heavy hitters left. We've all been there; you pour your heart and soul into your work and then the powers that be tell you that they have decided to " go in another direction" (do less and maximize profit) Producers need to understand that producing and investing in a solid product is way more profitable that cutting corners.

10 RepliesIt doesn't really matter. Either you like the game the way it is, or you don't. If you've got the spare time to dwell on a topic like this, I suggest you use it for something deeper and more important, like the meaning of life.

Edited by Kone19ps: 4/20/2015 7:11:09 PMThat's all locked up in no disclosure agreements and court proceedings. We will likely never know the truth
-
The lead writer might have held onto contents legal rights for book deals. So Bungie just changed a few things around.
-
Original story had the speaker and traveler as evil, and you destroy the traveler in the end. They realized that plan was shortsighted and they couldn't expand the game past there so it was changed on the fly.

2 RepliesIf you dig around you'll find some compelling post by former bungie employees and from people who had tracked destiny from day one. What I read, make it less complex, to much content for the money, split it into DLC for more money and the lead writer 1. left because of all the changes 2. asked to leave before some kind of financial compensation would have kicked in. But I'm with you, I want to hear it from bungie directly. I always think someday far from now, I'll see a post that talks in detail about destiny and what happened. It's right above the post from the people admitting they killed JFK.

"Non-Disclosure Agreement" *drops mic*
-
The only people that might definitively answer that would be Joe Staten or Bungie. I would like to see what he came up with.
-
The story is there of what is happening currently of what happened before we will find out eventually
-
2 RepliesI don't think we will ever know the real story as to why. But Bungie/Activision have to be worried based on their current customer feedback and with the caliber of the games coming out this fall. Star Wars Battlefront and Halo5 are both coming out in November.
-
6 RepliesRumor is because a member of Bungie left (creator of the story) and when he left he took the rights to the story with him
-
Like you say, we won't know unless Bungie or someone else tells us why. Though the most likely answer is that the lead writer left and, rather than pay royalties to someone no longer attached to the project for the work hr had done, they removed all he had laid creative hands on. As for whose call that was, I tend to lean towards those who hold the purse strings, however spite is also a powerful motivator, so who can say.
-
So they could split the story into more fragmented sections to sell at later dates for more money.
-
Remember the initial writer left and was replaced.
