The vice-CEO of Google has predicted that by 2040, humanity will gain the ability to live forever by having their consciousness's put into artificial, machine bodies. If you were immortal, what would you do? How do you think this will affect humanity's future?

I don't think I would want immortality

But is it really you that is immortal? If I upload my thoughts to a machine but then disconnect and am still in my body, the thing that's immortal is my copy. I'm still mortal.
I'll be honest, not so sure if want a second "me" around, especially knowing that I'm the obsolete version of myself
1 ReplyOh shit I could be a mini motorcycle and drift around corners with accordion music full blast

No. I'd rather die human than live forever as an artificial intelligence. What would be the point in life after immortality? At some point you're going to want it to end.

True immortality world be the worst curse imaginable, however this wouldn't be that. Computers degrade/all data storage degrades/ require power eventually the resources to maintain one will fail. But this set up could get you a few billion extra years maybe it wouldn't be to bad since you can still die.
true immortality is a curse because everything in the universe dies even our sun will die in 3 billion years... in 1 trillion years all stars in the universe will be dead in 1x10^99 years the last of the supermassive black holes will evaporate to nothing and if your really immortal your just starting your eternal life at this point.
If you were immortal, what would you do? How do you think this will affect humanity's future?
I wouldn't want to live forever.. I have my time and my place in this world. And when it's done, I'd like to think it'll finish sitting in front of the beach. To answer your questions, I'm not sure what I'd do if I were to become a machine. Would I feel emotions? Would I have a meaning in the world? I imagine they'll eventually just start replacing humans with robots with a consciousness to do manual labor. We probably wouldn't need to eat or anything, so I can imagine how it would help our ecosystem, explore the last frontier... But I don't think it would be the best action. Not to mention, it'll likely be very costly at first. So you'll probably outlive other people at first, and would you really want to live longer without those people?

I'd rather go for the genetic alteration method mentioned in the other posts. I like my humanity.

Can you still feel? Or feel pain or remorse? If not, no thank you

1 ReplyI heard about this. All I can think of is: "I have no mouth and I must scream"
-
You realize though. Thats a copy. A new you. The old you will die. You will die and an essentially cognitive clone will be born. Can't escape death that way. Sucks.

Digi-humans might not have senses, that sucks, they won't be able to enjoy fine things such as pizza and taking a piss after busting for one.

People in the 1960's thought we would have fought a 3rd World War by now and that we would be planet hoping in ships powered by nuclear fusion by the 1990's. Could the event the the vice CEO speak of come to pass? Sure. Maybe. If you can overcome the religious outcry and the potential of over population.

I don't wanna live forever because, as far as I am concerned, it would probrably be more a copy of me, then actually me. Furthermore with this tech I may never die but will I really live? Think about it.
It is in dearness only that a thing gains its value.
2 RepliesYou do realize there is such a thing as biological immortality right? The are biological engineers trying to figure out how to give humans the traits of both tardigrades and jellyfish, making us biologically immortal and borderline indestructible. Or, in theory, we could find a way for humans to make use of telomerase, which would prevent us from aging at all.

2 RepliesEverything we are see and feel is the result of signals in our brians. If our brain is in a computer we could literally download drugs, sex, love, happiness, regret, sorrow, pain.... it goes on. But we could also delete things, hurtful memories and nightmares. The real question is can we survive immortality? If we started slicing our minds away for comfort or even fun what would happen to us as individuals? Say you could overclock your computer brain, just delete unnecessary files like your sense of touch. You dont have fingers anymore you dont need that ability. For the rest of time you can never touch anything because you thought it would be fun once...

I would rather wink out of existence than have "immortality" by being implanted into some machine. For "real immortality (living in my fleshy body forever)" I would gladly accept it. I may go insane or become extremely bored after a few eons, but I would do it.

2 RepliesMeh, life has no meaning without death.
