Edit: Please read edit 5 before going on about firefly on FB. I know what it can do, and that's only situational, usually on thrall alone, not every other enemy.
So I decided to do a little field test, using both handcannons, to find out which one did most damage.
The test ran was on my Hunter at lvl. 32.
Both WoC and FB are maxed (Pictures shown).
Both handcannons do not have explosive rounds on (to better record damage output).
Enemies were loaded on "The Archive" mission at lvl. 30.
Results:
Fatebringer Precision Damage: 1505
Word of Crota Precision Damage: 1540
Word of Crota > Fatebringer
Edit 1: Lots of feedback guys, keep em coming!
Edit 2: As for my personal preference, WoC for CE Raid against Majors, AND VoG against minotaur shields. I prefer Atheon's Epilogue for Voidburn nightfalls. Fatebringer for everything else, that outlaw+ chain if woe × 3 is clutch.
Edit 3: 184 replies and counting, surprisingly lots more people prefer WoC than I thought, pretty cool!
Edit 4: 210 and counting!
Edit 5: Yes, Firefly is a good perk, but most of the time enemies will not willingly cluster together, except thralls. So you get a nice boom show for most of your headshots
Edit 6: 300+ comments, woohoo!
Edit 7: 500+ Replies. Lol

2 RepliesThis is something that's been tested already. You're talking about a total 35 damage difference. Which is practically negligible in most situations in PvE. I prefer fatebringer still and had some bias about WoC before I actually got it. However upon using it and leveling it up I actually like WoC more than I thought I would. I'm pretty bad with handcannons in crucible but decided to give WoC a try for the thorn bounty and actually did pretty well with it. It has great damage and fire rate. Wish it had outlaw though instead of phantom gift.

1 ReplyZOMG A WHOLE 35 DAMAGE MORE!!!!!!! The fact that fatebringer firefly can KILL 3 enemies around it makes fatebringer superior. Can word of Crota kill 4 thrall with ONE bullet? nah
-
1 ReplyYou won't make any headway with people who love the FB. they are blinded. WoC=single target high damage FB=crowd control. both guns are good. just for different things.
-
2 Replies
Edit 5: Yes, Firefly is a good perk, but most of the time enemies will not willingly cluster together, except thralls. -
If enemies are lvl30 it doesn't matter but the damage difference is greater when the enemies are 33
-
Word of Crota: DPS Fatebringer: Crowd control I have both and they both perform well. But a primary for DPS isn't the best thing to do. I use FB for crowds of adds, and my sniper for high healthed foes. Rockets for groups of both. WoC is great and handles amazingly with its perks, low recoil, good reload, and good range of the perk is selected. FB is amazing because of its perks. They go together really well. In the end, it's all preference.
-
You don't have explosive rounds on and try killing more than one dreg at a time or thrall with one shot to the head.
-
I'm upgrading FB now and will be upgrading WoC next

Edited by Chi Town USMC: 3/2/2015 6:56:31 PMTo me firefly is not situational. Here's why, most of Destiny is essentially go here and wait for your ghost to play galaga while you do what? Fight waves and waves of enemies. Also, firefly may not kill enemies that are further away but it will stun them shortly. Lastly, the damage difference is minimal and not really a valid argument against general mobs.
-
Are we arguing over 35 HP?, that is nothing, wouldn't even kill a thrall with that lil damage. Its personal preference, the perks of WoC suck (phantom gift? pls) the perks on FB rock (firefly, Yes pls). RoF is much better on WoC but that can lead to more missed shots in a hurry where FB can shoot slower but probably lands more precision. It is a matter of opinion, you cannot prvoe one over the other; especially since the one is Void and the other is Arc. Like apples and oranges. They both rock, and I like em both for what I use em for.
-
FateBringer no contest, even with less damage
-
Your damage number isn't that real debate I thought because it's kind of a "not shit" woc would have higher damage due to higher damage stat But besides that point good post!
-
1 ReplyI will take the -35 hit points WITH firefly over any other cannon. Period.
-
It irritates me how firefly is made out to be more than what it is. When in the perfect conditions, it is fantastic, but you are required to get precision kills and yes, the enemies need to be bunched up. Explosive rounds are a heavily watered down version, but have no requirements to work.
-
Just boils down to the situation, word of crota is for crota raid and fatebringer is for vault of glass. Word of crota has precision perk while fatebringer has firefly. Then it just comes down to ones void and ones arc so burn nightfalls are easier. Personally i always use fatebringer but swap and change depending on the enemies plus word of crota is a void primary so no more using atheons epiliogue.
-
Firefly isn't the only thing that makes this gun a beast. Outlaw ensures that your gonna keep firing to your hearts content with minimal pause time due to hand canons lacking reload speeds. I don't have a WoC but I bet I'd still use my Fatebringer hands down. WoC isn't bad but I think fatebringer takes the cake. Plus what's 35 more dmg to a lvl 30+ enemy anyway ?
-
Damage calculations are awesome! Although they don't take into consideration the AoE damage from firefly. It also has a huge area of effect so if we're talkin' damage per second, fate ringer calculates to a lot more.
-
2 RepliesFatebringer is the end all be all, I know it's a preference thing but here is a question for you..... can WoC take out multiple enemies with a single precision kill? no it can't. I'm not putting down what WoC is capable of, but the simple truth is that Fatebringer deals more damage overall since it deals so damn much collateral damage with Firefly.
-
For everything aside from hard mode Crota fatebringer is better
-
Lol says one gun is better because has more damage. Perks man its all about the perks.

Lol
I have to go with fatebringer not on damage or perks of the gun for my play style (run n gun) I prefer a gun that can hit its mark more frequently and I def hit more crit shots with FB mostly because of the clunky sights on word all that bone looks cool but it does little for performance but I'll take word over FB any day in Vog or a void burn nightfall but if people like firefly so much and that's what makes them choose a gun a high impact scout with firefly like the iron banner one will suit u better I think
-
For people saying it's only 30 more damage, look at the fatebringers impact and RoF and compare it to words impact and RoF. Higher fire rate means less impact. Therefore if they had the same impact and rate of fire, word of Crota would do wayyy more damage
-
I have both maxed out and prefer FB. Just for a minimal 35 points of damage, I would take FB and its firefly. But it is situational too. Took WoC to VoG for some cases and it was amazing.
-
I only just got Fatebringer, so I can't speak to either. But if you ask me, these comparisons all come down to a matter of preference ... Like IB/BH debate... One is more versatile, the other is a boss killer. I mean if you're counting numbers, then one is clearly higher than the other. But one is void, another arc, the perks are different, and they both look unique. So it's all preference, I can't knock anyone on their preference.
-
Im one of those few who can't get fatebringer... I got the word though and i love it. And another void primary is so great to have
