I'm currently having a debate with my friend and my girlfriend about the Dragons of Skyrim. They are both convinced that they are Wyverns, a sub-species of dragon, because of their structural design (4 limbs instead of 6).
What do you think?
-
They are obviously Dovah. Use that argument and you cannot be wrong.
-
Technically they are wyverns. I just call them all dragons I give no -blam!-s.
-
1 ReplyWyverns. What was the one type of dragons that could live in wells?
-
1 ReplyThey're Dragons.
-
1 ReplyDue to the important fact that dragons are not real, what is and what isn't a dragon is different everywhere. I'm pretty sure you're talking Dragons vs Wyverns by the D&D definitions. Clearly though, Skyrim is not D&D, so the rules don't apply. Dragons are dragons in TES, so dragons are dragons in Skyrim.
-
1 ReplyThey are Wyverns. Bethesda called them dragons to appeal to a larger fan base, if they used a term as specific as wyvern, Skyrim may not have become as popular. Sure, it might have sold as well if they used the correct term, but it's better to be safe than sorry, and use the word everyone is familiar with.
-
4 RepliesDragons are broken up into two categories: Drakes and Wyverns. Drakes are four-legged and tend to have wings sprouting from their back while Wyverns are two-legged and always have wings sprouting from their shoulders where arms should be, like bats.
-
Wyverns are still dragons,so they're right, and so are you
-
Considering that the concept of what constitutes a dragon is as diverse as the innumerable cultures that came up with the vaguely similar concept... Yes they are dragons. The concept of dragons were called "dragons" by the ancient Europeans that came up with the idea of giant flying lizard. Asia doesn't have the monopoly on dragon lore. One leg or infinite legs, doesn't matter. Also, they are considered dragons in-universe, which means that in the game culture, they are just dragons.
-
You're both right :P Dragon is an all en-compassing category, so anyone would be right to call them dragons, but the specific type of dragon that exists in Skyrim are Wyverns due to their skeletal structure and their wings also doubling as quasi-arms/legs when they're on the ground.
-
Have u people even read Ernest Drakes guide to dragons?!?!?! The name (wyvern or dragon l) depends on area they live!
-
They're called dragons in game. They're dragons.
-
Skyrim dragons are dragons. Monster Hunter dragons are Wyverns. Depends on the lore within the game.
-
1 Replywyverns are dragons, you nit-picking dolt.
-
This is probably one of the nerdiest threads I have seen here in a long time. Good job OP.
-
PC: 1) get the macho man dragons mod. 2) dragons are now macho man 3) problem solved
-
Does it really matter? Since Wyverns are a kind of dragon, calling them dragons isn't incorrect. It's like having an argument over whether one should label a tiger as a cat or as a tiger. tl;dr This is inane as hell.
-
3 RepliesSmaug is a Wyvern too.
-
I think they might be a kind of aerial Chupacabra.
Dumbass.
-
4 RepliesLet's be honest here, if you're having this debate, you don't have a girlfriend.
-
when did wyverns have legs?
-
They're dragons. TES lore calls them dragons. They look like wyverns from our mythical traditions? Doesn't matter, they're TES dragons just like Smaug is a LotR dragon and American Dragon Jake Long is an ADJL dragon and Rand Al'Thor is the Wheel of Time Dragon and dragons IRL are either dead or never existed. Contextual lore trumps noncontextual lore.
-
13 RepliesDragons If they are called "Dragons" in TES Lore, they are Dragons. It doesn't -blam!-ing matter what other fantasy worlds and IRL legends say. IRL Ebony isn't the dried blood of a god either.
-
Edited by Cheesy: 1/30/2014 1:31:31 AMDragons and Wyverns are the same thing, so it doesn't really matter what you choose. Besides the point, everyone in Skyrim calls them dragons. Not Wyverns.
-
It's not a matter of debate. They're built like bats, and that makes them Wyverns.
-
Edited by Tyger: 1/17/2014 5:54:15 PMEveryone saying that aren't dragons is wrong. They are only ever called dragons in TES so they are dragons. Bethesda could have named them unicorns and they would be unicorns. Other lore or mythology means nothing in TES. Dragons aren't real so they can be depicted any way Bethesda pleases.
