Here's a thought. Destiny takes place some 700 years in the future. Marathon starts in 2794. Bungie is working on a Marathon game.
Is Destiny a Marathon prequel???
-
I could see Destiny taking place in the timeline after Marathon 2 (branching away from M∞). The W'rkncacnter's release might explain the near-elimination of humanity.

1 ReplyDeep in my heart places, I kind of want it to be, but without anyone ever saying anything. Would anything in Marathon lore suggest it?
-
Until now, I totally forgot about Aleph One - Marathon Open Source.

I'M SO -blam!-ING EXCITED. I NEED MEGA CAPS TO SHOW MY EXCITEMENT. REGULAR CAPS LOCK ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH!

1 ReplySaw this on another site, haven't played Marathon myself but this person was adamant there were connections. Was anything like this in any leaked document?
Fun fact: the Fallen are exiled Pfhor, or at least they probably are. They were outcasts from a race of alien slavers from the Alpha Lupi system who refused to bow to their goddess and sever their limbs in sacrifice to her. Destiny takes place in the year 2707. One of the factions in Destiny are Spacers who fled to colonies after a war with "invaders" nearly a century before. Now they've decided to return, terraform the uninhabitable parts of earth and rebuild human civilization, but are being pushed out by the native earthmen who have a religious commitment to maintaining the planet as-is and protecting the City, their last major settlement. The name of this Space faction? The Earth Space Council. And they want to expand to create a UNIFIED Earth Space Council. No way this isn't a Marathon prequel, or at least an implied one.
1 ReplyOn the contract leak didn't it say most employees were working on destiny and a small team was working on a marathon game.
-
3 RepliesI was googling shit and found this. :) lol
-
Probably not.
-
1 ReplyDon't see how it could be. I thought that contact with the Pfhor during the invasion of Tau Ceti was the first significant contact with extraterrestrial species in the Marathon universe (excepting one holographic Jjaro diplomat). Certainly the Traveler would count, to say nothing of aliens invading Earth. I was hoping people would stop doing this... it was bad enough with Halo.

1 ReplyAren't most Bungie universes very loosely related?
-
It's simple : No
-
Huh, you know this never came into mind! Thanks, Durado, now I'm going to obsessing over this during the next few days!

3 RepliesEdited by Recon Number 54: 2/14/2013 11:51:34 PMCan't be a prequel if it has human FTL tech.
-
Yes! But really, I just want to contribute to speculation before the flood of info we are about to experience.
-
It's an interesting idea, but Bungie has been VERY specific about the fact they're creating a whole new universe. New Universe basically equates to not Marathon.
-
If it is, that would be rather disappointing to be honest. Don't get me wrong the marathon series was great but if they said that their next game was a totally new universe and it turned out to be a Marathon game, that would suck. I'm actually glad that Bungie is making something completely new, and I feel pretty old now since I was a fan of Bungie since the first Halo game. Imagine how the marathon fans here feel. Or heck if anyone was around for Gnop, imagine how they feel, then yet again this site (which is Bungie.net entirely not B.next) didn't come online until 2004 so maybe they weren't here but they were still a fan of Bungie alright. If anyone would be happy that Destiny was a marathon prequel, it would be the marathon fans. I guess I can see why you would think it could be a prequel to Marathon since Bungie used the slogan "See you starside" when they went dark. I remember the bobs in Marathon saying that.
-
Hmmm, possibly, though like Funkbrotha10 stated, this is a new universe, not a remake of an old one.
-
They should have an actual marathon in the game...
-
that would be pushing the definition of "new universe"

13 RepliesEdited by burritosenior: 2/14/2013 2:18:25 AMNah. Sounds like a new Universe to me. 5% of the studio can work on a Marathon game, so I'd bet that's a side thing rather than anything tied to Destiny [directly]. More importantly... finish WoT so we can talk about it!!! PS If you talk to Deej, make him read it. He read the first 9 books then stopped and forced me to give a woefully incomplete summary of the ending. >.<

3 RepliesI somehow foresee Bungie trying to connect all their IPs at the end of it all. Not through an official time line, but some type of alternative event occurs where the universes are intertwined with one another. Would make for an interesting read at the end of it.
-
3 RepliesEdited by FoMan123: 2/14/2013 4:39:11 AMThey've said "new universe" so many times that I don't think they've given us any reason to believe otherwise.
-
Possibly, maybe its a good reason for humanity to delve into the reaches of space, and use the alien tech to advance to the point of interstellar travel.
-
You Are Destiny
Perhaps its in the Marathon Universe, but it takes place on Earth.
-
Just take a look at my name and you can probably guess I would hope this is true, ;). But like most users are here saying, it most likely will only contain resemblances/easter eggs, but will not be a part of the same universe (like Halo and Marathon). On a side note, in regards to the Marathon project, which 5% of the staff can work on. Marcus Lehto and Joe Tung were leading that project and with both of them quitting Bungie in the same month, I would guess it had to do with Bungie needing to assimilate that team back into the Destiny project.

I hope not. I really want a new universe.
