Should I get into Elden Ring as a casual gamer?

I’ve played Destiny for years on and off, I am not a super active gamer, too much real life stuff to take care of but I’m home from college and have some free time. The Souls games have such a reputation for difficulty but there has been so much positive buzz around Elden Ring that I’ve been thinking about trying it out. Are casual players able to get into and enjoy it?

  • As someone who beat the dlc 5 days in. Got the platinum trophy on PlayStation legit and has around 400 hours within about a year and plays lots of PvP. Elden ring is one a game for history. My dad got to the final boss ages before me and played it lots. But he stopped playing it because he didn’t know where the final boss was and couldn’t be bothered. Later I tried it and explored as a little samurai tarnished. I tried Margit a few times and got shredded so played destiny for a few months. I eventually got back into the game and when destiny was in season of the witch and early season of the wish I would play nothing but Elden ring. I didn’t care about destiny fomo because all I wanted to do was become Elden lord/and the most bada** katana user in the game. I developed my build to vigor dex faith and endurance as I grew as a tarnished and felled more bosses. I loved malenias design and really wanted to beat her while I watched videos of let me solo her. I eventually got there and beat her on my 17th attempt. I later beat the game got everything I could in my first run and started new game+ I sped through all the bosses beat that run got to around level 250 and invested a lot of time beating people in PvP with no armour and one katana. Later on I wanted to platinum trophy the game so I started my 3rd run on a new character. I tried a mage build that time and really liked it beating the whole game from scratch in 23 hours and finally getting all 3 endings. In destiny’s later on months of season of the wish I played the game while waiting for shadow of the erdtree to eventually release. I sped through most of on my NG+ character who was very ready. I did a few quest lines. Ruined some and had a blast in the process. I got to the final boss and died about 90 something times always getting crushed in phase two cursing at the game when I died. But the tears of happiness when I eventually did it were more than beautiful. My dad was so proud of me and after beating it I felt like I could beat any game. I love Elden ring so very much and I totally think you should play it.

  • I’d recommend just don’t rush into overpowered builds cuz then it gonna make the game to easy li think dark souls 3 is a better starter but it’s your choice

  • Yes. It’s not impossible, just adapt your equipment as appropriate

  • It’s fun enough, but if you were to try some of From Software’s games, you can do better than Elden Ring. If you’re on Playstation, do Bloodborne instead.

    • My sons both love it and have multiple play throughs, but I do know that some boss fights still frustrate them. I know I'll never attempt them after watching them play. I'm not a blocker. I just want to do damage. That doesn't work in this game.

    • If there ever was a casual gamer, it would be me. I may have never passed even the first boss, but I cannot deny the fun that is Elden Ring. It’s definitely worth it.

    • Yeah, FromSoft has sprinkled the game with plenty of tools to help you. This is probably their most entry level game, but it’s still challenging. Difficulty can be bypassed by learning how the boss moves and knowing when to hit them. But you don’t have to solo every boss. A casual player can definitely progress through the game using weapons, summons, spirit ashes, consumables, etc. It may take some time though if you want to see everything, because FromSoft loves their little nooks n crannies where they hide 20% of their game. If you B line it, you only really need to kill 12(?) bosses. And you might as well get it with the DLC if you’re gonna buy ER. (Though it’s a bit more difficult.) With FromSoftware, there is no question about the quality of work they put in those. Sometimes it’s better than the base game. But it definitely improves the experience.
And about some of the other games: For me, I started with Dark Souls 3 (which was probably most player friendly before ER) and that got me introduced to the gameplay. As someone who was fresh from FPS games, I still enjoyed it. If you’ve got a PlayStation, maybe get the PS exclusive Bloodborne (if you end up liking the type of games FromSoft makes.) My personal #1 (and only Platinum) with Elden Ring very close behind.
TL;DR: as long as you’ve got the time to spend, no need to worry about difficulty. Overcoming the challenge is the fun part. Up to you if it’s your sorta thing, though.

I enjoyed the first Dark Souls game although I didn’t finish it or get that far tbh. I think the crux of it for me is that I don’t have the time to waste getting good. If I was still 16/17 and had hours to spare playing games then I would probably have passed the point of giving up, but my time is more valuable than that now. When games are too hard I will persist but only up to a point. I would get it on sale, that way you haven’t wasted too much money if you play it and decide it’s not for you.
