If I had to choose between a president the UNGA doesn't laugh at and a president they do, I would go with the former, but I honestly don't care that much either way. A lot of the headline-grabbing stuff Trump does is when he sort of upsets the decorum of the presidency, and then people trip over themselves to talk about how ashamed they are and how this is not how a president should behave. And I think that's fair-- but it's also pretty clear that respectability, while necessary, is definitely not sufficient. Nobody laughed (publicly, at least) at Colin Powell when he told the world Iraq had WMD's and used it as a pretext for war. Powell and Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld all kept with the decorum of their offices... and then tens of thousands of people died anyway, in what is a much greater global embarrassment than anything Trump has done. Obviously this is not to say Trump is good, or that facepalming over a president getting laughed at on the world stage is bad. But when you start to contextualize these things so you can figure out how much they matter, you either realize the answer is "not that much" or you run the risk of overshooting way too far ("the world laughs at us like never before"). That's the kind of language Trump uses, too: everything is the greatest, biggest, best, worst [i]ever[/i]-- and 99.9% of the time it isn't, but Trump can make us think it's true by using outrage to inflate our sense of importance. And again that doesn't mean he doesn't do really, really important things too, or that nothing Trump does matters. It just comes down to the really boring and bland point that we need to focus on stuff that really does matter and hold the president accountable to them, rather than continuously lowering the bar for his performance. 1) Well... is it true or not? All things considering, what with the entire mainstream media and Left-leaning government against him, they’re doing their best. 2) It’s not good to boast like that. He had it coming. However, he laughed along with it, as opposed to getting offended over it. That takes humility.
