The new progression system eliminates player choice, is poorly explained and feels unrewarding.

As the title says the new progression system could do with a revisit, currently the way it works is: - Flashpoint, Heroic Story, Heroic Adventure, Strikes, Crucible, Gambit, Ikora and Clan XP rewards all give +5 power items until 520 when it goes down to +1 power. - Nightfall and Nightfall Score Challenge rewards give +5 power until 540 then +1 power after that. - Dreaming City weeklies and Challenge rewards give +5 power until 560 then +1 power after that. So what does this mean? Firstly it eliminates any choice in the order you do your activities if you want to actually be rewarded, as increases are based on your average power level it's pointless doing any +1 PL activities before doing the +5 ones. If one of your clan-mates jumps on and wants to hit up strikes, tough luck if you haven't cleared the nightfall/dreaming city yet, you either lose out on power or tell them to find someone else. Secondly it HEAVILY penalizes you if you end up having a large amount of equipment clustered around your average power, with one low item bringing that average down. You can no longer take advantage of any of the +1 power activities unless you first boost that one low piece of gear. This can lead to players falling far behind their peers based purely on the distribution of their drops rather than the effort they put in. For example if my gear is all 522+ and I have a pair of boots at around 215 dragging the average down to 521, all of my +1 gear will drop at 522 making it useless unless I luck out and find a pair of boots. Thirdly and the biggest issue is players have wasted effort particularly this week, because none of the power level increases are explained anywhere in game. The entire system is left ambiguous with all the rewards being listed identically as "powerful engrams". Bungie needs to show the difference in game between activities that will reward +5 power and +1 power, rather than expecting us to trawl through their twitter feed, blog posts and youtube creators analysis to find the answer. TL;DR - The tiered power system means once you hit 520 you need to do your +5 PL activities first, punishes players with specific low pieces of gear by denying them rewards and isn't properly illustrated in the UI. EDIT: For anyone looking for help levelling, Daniel300999 posted a helpful guide here.

  • I wonder if Bungie realized that by tying the clan engram to bounties and a lower tier of progression, they doomed the clan system. If clan engrams won't help me get past 520 then I won't be doing the bounties. I'm sure there are many players who will follow suit. Clan engrams should always yield top tier rewards as one of the most reliable ways to progress. Otherwise the clan system is doomed to fail. Also, it needs a ton of bounties. The current minimal selection in moronic.

    • So your theory is that the only way to play the game is to do the math and plot the most direct path to max power, and anything else is somehow punishment? What a -blam!-ed up worldview you have. Many of us play for fun, and don’t worry if someone else levels faster, or if RNG isn’t always our best buddy.

        • Tbh even though there’s plenty to do I feel like there’s nothing to do. I never liked the powerful gear and engrams as a means to progressing. I never liked infusion either. I preferred upgrading playing hard activities and upgrading. I don’t hop on excited to do some heroic missions and strikes for powerful loot it feels more like a chore. Idk especially because it’s up to rngesus to give you the gear you NEED.

        • I agree for the most part. My main issue is doing all my activities and getting a 60/40 split between some stupid grenade launcher and the one armor piece that is lower than the current because of the av erage power level. I'm enjoying the hell out of the game, more so than any time previously for D2 so I'm not gonna complain. They'll bring it all together more soon enough.

        • All progression should at least get you to 550 high enough to do the raid and get to 600 but with the way Bungie has done it unless you have a clan and good friend your -blam!-ed for the raid using lfg site which will not want any person not 550. They also won’t want anyone without 5 completions but I’ve gotten lucky with raid groups but the lvl isn’t something groups compromise on. I didn’t know any of this until I saw it in a video and was like wait what the -blam!- why wasn’t this told to the player base to begin with.

          • What really hurts is when you get the Edge Transit every time you complete a milestone. Me: I don’t want one Edge Transit...I want every Edge Transit Bungie: We are listening. Keep the comments coming.

            • Wow so doing harder content gives you better progression? Who would have thought of such a novel idea? Seriously, your point is counters by the simple fact harder content gives better rewards. Like it should.

              • Try getting back into the game now that it might be worth playing with the improvements... I'm lucky if I move up 3 light after a couple hours a night. Get an exotic? Have fun using it for half an hour because you'll never get to infuse it. I dont even get the option for powerful gear from milestones because none show up, I'm assuming because I have to run through all the campaigns first, which I'm finding boring and tedious. It's getting worse actually because since started playing again I haven't had a single power weapon drop and what I have is 40 light behind everything else and now my other drops are at the same level I have or lower. I was actually going to get forsaken but what's the point if it's going to take me months to even get my light level up.

                • I think the outline of the tiered rewards is good. But yes. It doesn't explain it well. Bungie did specifically state that there will be several activities that will net you at least +1 in power. So it's not like we were lied to. If anything i'd throw this under an unforseen side effect with poor UI.

                • How do you know about the “average” bringing the drops down? What about like the eververse items that drop at 10. I thought it was based off your highest light alone and not an average of all my gear??? The power is based off whatever is the highest piece in every slot with exotics possibly contributing more because you cannot equip more than two (weapon and armor) exotics. So how do you know they act in such a way, and how do the other pieces of equipment, no matter how low the power level, bring down the overall power when the new engrams decrypt? Are we to disassemble every piece of equipment that may be significantly lower than our potential power level? Or are we supposed to infuse what we wanted to keep from year 1 up to offset our poor average? Thanks

                  • Ya where is this explained? It would make sense as to why basically the last 7 activities I've done have dropped useless items because my helmet is 320. That also means that even the redicules fricken cabal bounty dude is only worth +1 light level? Your kidding right that took almost 30 minutes soloing it.

                  • I get the idea behind the tiered milestones. It makes sense. However you are quite right to feel a little frustrated about the lack of clarity on it, both during pre-release discourse and in-game UI. I would absolutely have set about my milestones differently this week had I known; fortunately I had 3 which were bugged and a couple I havent finished yet so its not a complete wash. I also have some variety amongst my weapon loadouts, so I'll take some solace in that I suppose.

So.. These numbers of yours.. Got a Bungie quote stating these? Or are they assumptions on your part? I ask because... Nightfall I ran last night, at 522 light, gave a +8 increase on one of my weapon slots. Gambit, Crucible, etc, still giving me better than +1 gains, and I'm able to hit 525 at max at the moment. Literally have been doing the Weekly and Daily stuff as I feel, no particular order, and I have not seen any kind of sign of my being penalized for the order in which I've been doing them. What I can say though is that it does appear that Dreaming City based Powerfuls do drop higher than others, but that is understandable. Dreaming City is ENDGAME thus the Powerful loot should drop higher there than elsewhere. Edit: To sum it up.. In my experience thus far, across two characters, I am not seeing this 'tiered' power progression you speak of. Unless I count Dreaming City, which I don't as I expect its Powerfuls to be better than elsewhere.

                      • I agree 100%. The confusing slow grind is not rewarding or fun and just makes the content artificially harder by temporarily suppressing light levels. Because of this, early on every light gain makes a huge difference for activities. The worst part is as you get higher- the fewer truly powerful engrams you get and if it drops in the wrong slot you can miss out on a lot of power. Basically all powerful engrams are easy to get and it’s just luck who is higher. Prime engrams kind of counter this but they are too rare to farm and expect a real meaningful impact
