As the title says the new progression system could do with a revisit, currently the way it works is:
- Flashpoint, Heroic Story, Heroic Adventure, Strikes, Crucible, Gambit, Ikora and Clan XP rewards all give +5 power items until 520 when it goes down to +1 power.
- Nightfall and Nightfall Score Challenge rewards give +5 power until 540 then +1 power after that.
- Dreaming City weeklies and Challenge rewards give +5 power until 560 then +1 power after that.
So what does this mean?
Firstly it eliminates any choice in the order you do your activities if you want to actually be rewarded, as increases are based on your average power level it's pointless doing any +1 PL activities before doing the +5 ones. If one of your clan-mates jumps on and wants to hit up strikes, tough luck if you haven't cleared the nightfall/dreaming city yet, you either lose out on power or tell them to find someone else.
Secondly it HEAVILY penalizes you if you end up having a large amount of equipment clustered around your average power, with one low item bringing that average down. You can no longer take advantage of any of the +1 power activities unless you first boost that one low piece of gear. This can lead to players falling far behind their peers based purely on the distribution of their drops rather than the effort they put in. For example if my gear is all 522+ and I have a pair of boots at around 215 dragging the average down to 521, all of my +1 gear will drop at 522 making it useless unless I luck out and find a pair of boots.
Thirdly and the biggest issue is players have wasted effort particularly this week, because none of the power level increases are explained anywhere in game. The entire system is left ambiguous with all the rewards being listed identically as "powerful engrams". Bungie needs to show the difference in game between activities that will reward +5 power and +1 power, rather than expecting us to trawl through their twitter feed, blog posts and youtube creators analysis to find the answer.
TL;DR - The tiered power system means once you hit 520 you need to do your +5 PL activities first, punishes players with specific low pieces of gear by denying them rewards and isn't properly illustrated in the UI.

I dont see any problems with it, its not a race, just play the game and your light level will get up, quick! I play solo 90% of the time and got to 533 yesterday, without doing the bugged milestones. If i can do it, you can do it too!

2 RepliesMy gloves have made every Powerful Engram source tapped so far this week worthless. 4 clan engrams, Ikora's Bounty engram, Daily Gambit, Daily Strike and Daily Heroic Adventure and Spider Bounty, all useless because what they dropped is below what I already have, and it's because no gloves have dropped. I'd mind less if all of those drops were just 1 point higher than what I already had of that piece, because that would be progression, albeit slow. I don't want to do the higher power Powerful stuff until I get gloves because that would be such a waste of what the High Power Powerful stuff could progress my level. Not liking this. How many "Outrageous Fortune" (oh the irony in the name) Grenade Launchers does the game think I need!?

1 ReplyImo there is ONLY 1 downside and thats that cores are thrown into infusion.
-
5 Repliesfunny thing is that the progression system has pissed many people off, this much is true. I can remember a couple of months ago, that people were complaining that there isn't enough to do in the game and prior to solstice of heroes you had majority of the player base just loitering around and doing other shit, keeping themselves busy with other games. they changed it and people are complaining about a whole of other shit now. for now I am neutral on this, as I am still grinding my way up.

Welcome to Destiny

I game with a couple of friends consistently and we knew where to get what we wanted prior to forsaken and since then we’ve just been scattered all over the maps not knowing really what to do we’ve worked out just miss all activities labeled legendary gear. Daily bounties for glimmer and materials and then trying the nightfall’s for gear. Ikora was easy one this week and that rewarded accordingly. But I’m not too fussed it’s given us more time to play and enjoy exploring. We’ve not managed any individual clan xp yet since launch especially with bounties for crucible we just don’t play crucible and have no desire to, but we do enjoy gambit.
-
Yeah I had no idea it worked this way until I read this.. Another thing that could do with a revisit is the infusion system when it comes to masterwork cores. I dont mind paying cores to upgrade exotics , but I feel with it's a bit excessive for legendaries. The only way to bypass this is with infusing duplicate items but most times that doesnt help too much.
-
Yeah they should be basing drops on your overall power level. Sadly, bungie doesn't do this which makes the grind long and unpredictable. Too many worthless duplicates. I turned in my offering last night Got a pair of boots from the chest. Then two more pairs of boots for redeeming the bounty. So three pairs in ten seconds time as an example. 😏
-
3 RepliesI think it's funny how hard Bungie tries to treat this game like it's WoW.
-
3 RepliesDon't forget it is nearly entirely set up around a fireteam of three to get most of the stuff also.
-
Um I got a 532 piece of gear from my flashpoint so I’m not sure if your right

Edited by IMADAJ: 9/13/2018 5:24:08 AMThey added more “steps” to climb. What did we have before? Nightfall’s, raids, and a few weekly bounties could get you past the soft cap. Now we have several soft caps as you pointed out, 500, 520, 540, 560 or whatever. The complaint before with a single soft cap was that non of the other activities would offer rewards. Now they do. Small, but it’s better than nothing like before. We also have so many more ways to improve our light than before.

socialism doesn't work either.

4 Replieswhere has bungie stated this is how the new system is to work? anyone that has hit that high of a light level has been using some sort of exploit more than likely as theres not enough powerful/prime engrams to have been able to be done to hit that high yet since the release of forsaken. when bungie states this is how its supposed to work lays it all out in detail then ill believe all the “working as intended” fanbois
-
Honestly those masterwork core infusions piss me off much more.
-
Feels fine to me, I’m at 530 and only run 1 character.
-
This is a reasonable assertion. I agree Bungie should listen to this sentiment. They need to slightly tweak the progression system, but only minor. Not some huge overhaul tho.
-
It’s just the beta.

20 Repliesthis game is over. done. Bungie absolutely cannot help themselves...i was furious about Masterwork Cores being part of infusion...i was furious about "Cannot reacquire randomized gear"...and now i stumble upon this post...this game is over. Bungie killed it. anyone still playing just doesnt know it yet. -BO4 in a few weeks -Anthem in 2019 -Division 2 in 2019 ...your done Bungie. and its your own fault.

I get the idea behind the tiered milestones. It makes sense. However you are quite right to feel a little frustrated about the lack of clarity on it, both during pre-release discourse and in-game UI. I would absolutely have set about my milestones differently this week had I known; fortunately I had 3 which were bugged (which will be fixed on thursday) and a couple I havent finished yet so its not a complete wash. I also have some variety amongst my weapon loadouts, so I'll take some solace in that I suppose.
-
Don’t forget that all those drops at your level are not even good for infusing because infusing is ridiculously expensive and can not be done just so you can have different load outs, further reducing your ability to play the game the way you would like.
-
2 RepliesIt's a little stiff, but not as horrid as you're making it out to be. Besides, this is the fruit of the hand selected summit of people who want to be streamers.
-
5 RepliesDo public events and Lost sectors inside nightfalls. YOUR WELCOME.
-
2 Replies
You can no longer take advantage of any of the +1 power activities unless you first boost that one low piece of gear.
Go into the Nightfall by yourself, and farm blue drops. They drop just 5 levels below your current level, which should help balance out those equipment holes.

Well now im depressed((

4 RepliesI wonder if Bungie realized that by tying the clan engram to bounties and a lower tier of progression, they doomed the clan system. If clan engrams won't help me get past 520 then I won't be doing the bounties. I'm sure there are many players who will follow suit. Clan engrams should always yield top tier rewards as one of the most reliable ways to progress. Otherwise the clan system is doomed to fail. Also, it needs a ton of bounties. The current minimal selection in moronic.
