Already have worries about the money grab with Year 2

So... I'm sitting here watching the Twitch stream for the Year 2 reveal of Destiny 2, and I was like... Soooo freaking excited. Sooooo excited all the way through the vid doc and even into the beginning of the actual live stream, but then they introduced this thing called the Annual Pass. I could be overreacting, and that's part of the reason I'm making this post, but it really seems like the Annual Pass is just a new way for Bungie to content block the community and seep you dry of money without actually really giving you any new REAL content. So, is the Annual Pass like the DLC bundle you bought when you first purchased the game, except for the next year of coming DLC's? Or is the Annual Pass a new pay wall that essentially brings a pay-to-win experience into Destiny? The way they talked about it on stream made it seem like the later. Like a way for Bungie to stay afloat because they've been taking hits in their revenue because Destiny 2 and it's subsequent DLC's really didn't hit the mark. If that is the case, I don't think the community should be held accountable for that loss and be responsible for recouping it. So please please please tell me I'm wrong, and teach me a little more about what's really going on. Also, can I get your opinions? I'm interested to hear about everyone's impressions on this. Thanks Guardians, S1R

  • The two questions I have are 1) What is the content that we are getting? and 2) How is my experience if I choose not to buy the Annual Pass? Bungie needs to show us what we are getting with the Pass and explain it in detail. Using vague statements like "end game challenges" and "pinnacle activities" isn't going to cut it. Are we getting new raids, strikes, pvp maps and modes, PoE style activities, and quests? More importantly we need to know how this impacts those in the community that don't buy it. Will I be shut out from certain playlists like Strikes, Iron Banner, Trials, Gambit, and Nightfalls if I don't have the Pass? When does does the shut out occur? Is it immediate or at the beginning of a Season? If I'm not locked out am I at a significant disadvantage when it comes to pvp if my light level is a factor again or because I don't have access to specific weapons? Can I still take part in Activities such as Festival of the Cost or Crimson Pays (I kid, but seriously)? I hope that the Pass isn't something they are selling us before they have conceived an idea of what kind of content they are going to offer, and if they already know what the content is I hope they keep up the communication and let us know what the hell it is. I want to believe in Bungie again but they have lost a lot of good will, and I really hope that they are overly transparent about what it includes and how it affects me if I don't buy it.

    • Deej pretty much implied on stream that you shouldn't expect these DLC drops to be full expansions (which is pretty ironic, given that not even expansions in this game feel like full expansions), so I will definitely not buy this annual pass. People seem to forget that Eververse was implemented with the purpose of creating revenue for live content. Now we still have Eververse, we still pay for each expansion, and now we even pay for "content drops", whatever that will be. I think the only way to milk us even harder would be introducing a monthly subscription fee. It makes me sad how greed can ruin the vibe of an otherwise pretty decently looking expansion.

      • Exactly. My concerns stem from the fact that dating clear back to D1, Bungie over promises and under delivers while vague about exactly what you will get with your money. I’m not holding out hope this will be a turnaround for them. Specifically: 1) What exactly does the new season pass (won’t call it annual pass, it’s a season pass) contain? We know it’s not story missions or QoL fixes since they have stated those aren’t coming (SM) or are free to everyone (QoL). And from my understanding, this is also not going to be DLC as that will still be sold throughout the year. Meaning at some point DLC 3 & 4 will be released and the SP will be in addition to that. Is it Dawning/Doubles/SRL? Standalone strikes or Lairs? No one knows so I’m waiting, I won’t blind preorder ever again. 2) What will happen to Eververse? That was sold to us as funding “new content”. So if it’s providing SRL/Dawning/Doubles, then what is the season pass providing. And if not, then what is eververse providing? As others have pointed out, the only content EV provides in D2 are cosmetics that you have to buy from EV. 3) DLC. As stated above, my understanding is that DLC is still forthcoming. If that is wrong, and the SP is the only DLC and that won’t have any story campaigns, then I’m gone for good. I’m mostly a story campaign solo player. Very very rarely do I play PvP. And I can’t justify paying for minimal new content even if it’s a strike or lair and refuse to pay for SRL Dawning etc. TL;DR. Bungie’s history and this being a giant unknown means I can’t justify spending more on D2. Too many better, deeper games are coming out this fall to bother for $40, let alone $70

      • There is no pay to win aspect. Its basically just going to be a DLC like Warmind or Curse of Osiris without the cutscenes, storyline, and patrol areas. You still get new exotic weapons/armor added to the loot tables, new end game activities, a light level cap increase, strikes, etc for $10 each update. That sounds reasonable and is basically the same as some CoD or Battlefield DLC that has no story content added. Why are people now saying this is Pay to Win when this system has been in place since DLCs first started being released? Remember, no one is forcing you to pay for the annual pass. Wait to see if the content in them is worth it to you or not.

      • I don’t mind buying this pass. I will be waiting until I learn more about what it is, however, before I buy anything. From what I can tell, we will be getting more consistent content than what we have previously. Only time will tell. Remain cautiously optimistic.

        • The way I see it, every year the major dlc was 40 to 60 bucks. Each dlc after that for the year was 30. So that means anywhere from 100 to 120 bucks for a year of destiny. So I'm more than happy to pocket 30 to 50 bucks compared to the usual. People need to calm down and do some simple math to see it's not a big deal.

            • I view it like this, how much did I pay, and continue to pay vs. how much play time I get. I can buy a game for $60, play it for a few weeks, beat it, and be happy with my purchase. With Destiny and D2 I paid that same price, but got months of play time. Add in dlc, for less than the base game, again, adding more playtime. For the same amount of time invested, I easily could have spent nearly triple on new, different games to get the same amount of play time. As long as I enjoy it, I don't mind dropping more money.

            • I Don’t get the big deal, we all earn our money differently and make a choice how to spend it. I’m on the fence at the moment waiting for more info, if I deem it’s worth the money then I will choose to buy it. If I don’t I will buy something else, no point going online and whinging about it. Buy don’t buy it that’s your business , nobody else cares. Same way I would go out for the night and spend £40 easily for 8 hours of fun , there’s no difference if I can get 8 hours fun out of the next update

From what i can think of trials and iron banner will have power advantages active. You will have to buy this dlc and annual pass if you want to play either of those effectively as power levels only go up with purchased dlc. Because of this crapola they have decided they can sell seasons with little to no real content a game mode here and there no story no campaign nothing of relevance either buy it or be destroyed in weekly and monthly activities. It is Bungie giving the community the finger for making them fix their mess. They broke it and either you pay to fix it or you suffer.

                  • Well, I can understand them putting a paywall between base game users and DLC users in terms of content; access to new raids, social spaces, storylines, etc. That's what is (supposedly) going to be what the price tag is for: new storylines and endgame pursuits based off of those. However, we can definitely safely assume that certain things they spoke about will actually be FREE Including: -New weapon slot system -New subclass supers (probably) -PvP maps from DLC -New UI improvements (Collections) -New mod system -New masterwork system TBH, I don't see this as a money grab (I know, I know, I get that this does seem that way), mostly because it costs the same as TTK and seems to have as much content, if not more. I am angry about how Eververse is somehow still a thing when they ask us to pay for the Annual Pass, since Eververse was originally introduced as a way to support the Live team.

                  • Honestly, the content locked behind the annual pass should be free as a gesture of good will and a "Thank you" for us sticking though it thick an thin. But who am I kidding. Good will from Bungie is like winning the lottery.

                  • From what i've seen and understood it's like a season pass for an expansion....for an expansion!! I was just like you man, exited to see the reveal, the supers, gambit all that stuff and then i saw this season pass they renamed. I'm all for paying $40 for an expansion, but i cannot support a reskinned season pass. If this succeeds (which it probably will, because preorders) other companies will start implementing it too. Destiny 2 is too expensive, if you look at the base game, dlc and microtransactions that go with it. Top it of with a season pass for an expansion. For the sake of anyone who has purchased the expansion, i hope $70 gives you enough content to last a whole year and i hope bungo has taken into consideration that people will want more. Especially if they make them pay extra

I'm not sold on the annual pass either. It does sound like "seasonal" updates. New guns, grind to get back old exotics, stuff like that. It doesn't sound like full blown DLC. I'd like to play the new DLC, but am unsure whether to buy it standalone, or with the annual pass. Worst case scenario, if I but the annual pass and it turns out to be rubbish, then I just buy DLC going forward.

                  • If they can pump out quality content I’m happy to pay. I’ve played various MMO’s over the years that have a subscription based model (you pay around $14.99 a month to play) and when the content is of high quality and comes out at a good pace, it’s well worth it. World of Warcraft is the best example of this in my opinion. I think it’s a good opportunity for Destiny to get the content injection that it needs. Given Bungie’s track record I am concerned that they are just making a cash grab but based on the vidoc it does look like they’re moving in the right direction.

                  • I agree 100%. Plus you have to own the Garbage season pass to play it. Why? I think they are going to recycle content from those expansions. Like playing a mission backwards. Sound familiar?
