Anyone feel like Zavala was really out of place in the Campaign?
Hello everybody,
Why was Zavala even in the story to begin with? From what little we know about him he has no connection with Ana Bray or Rasputin, and he doesn't want to use the power of the warmind for personal reasons that he never clarifies. Plus I though Hunters fell under Cayde jurisdiction.
It would have been way better and make so much more sense if Cayde was involved in this, here is a scenerio:
After the events of Twilights Gap Cayde becomes the new Hunter Vanguard leader and this puts him in distraught since now he can't go out into the wilds enjoy the freedom and learn about his past. So he gets in contact with Ana and makes a deal with her, he knows she wants to investigate her past which may have a connection with the warmind so he fakes her records saying she's dead and she is free to find the Warmind which my help Cayde learn who he was before becoming an Exo.
I'm an amateur at storytelling yet I think what I put here is beyond better than in game, I may be getting full of myself over something I made up but what do you all think?
Edit: I am extremely surprised by how popular this became, guess people really don't like Bungie's continued poor performance for in game story.

I agree. If any of the vanguard ahold have been involved, Cayde would've been the best choice. They're probably saving him for the September DLC though.

The whole thing is just campy. Need some good meaty and dark storytelling in the next Comet. I do like this dlc story better than others but still^

It would have made a lot more sense if cayde-6 was in the campaign. Exo's were (assumedly) created by Cloves Bray, so it would have been much more effective if he was featured in the DLC considering he's an Exo. We could have gotten a deeper look into his past similar to how we learned more about ikora in curse of Osiris

He said in the beginning “don’t use Rasputin”. And he’s pissed. Then next mission you use Rasputin against orders and he’s like. “Yea we need him. Just like I planned.” He changes his mind instantly.

At the time, yes. But he is team lead, I'm sure he deals with this stuff when that stuff needs tended to. Watch Bungie screw us over and make Zavala the bad guy.

Not only out of place but turned into a complete douchebag AND contradicting himself, for example:- - “I will never trust Rasputin”, says the same guy who also previously stated: - “If we are to rebuild our golden age it will be with Rasputin at our side”

Edited by Guardian8972: 5/13/2018 10:17:24 PMIf it had been Saladin it would have made more sense (ya know, the guy who has history with Rasputin) but i'm guessing that was the original plan then SOME -blam!- WITH A BEARD on the bungie team said "naw make it Zavala, players who are new don't know anything about saladin's backstory with Rasputin." so they had too replace the model and rerecord all the voice lines.

7 RepliesThis isn't a coherent ongoing narrative and unfolding story like Halo was. They abandoned the darkness concept because they never knew what to do with it and this game has continuously suffered an identity crisis because the writers are just incompetent. Now we have left are these little disneyfied mini movies and these blanks and Leupold story arcs will never be explained, they are treated as self-contained marketing tools and nothing else.

3 RepliesLove the actor that voices Zavala, he was money on the Wire. But, I hate Zavala. He is a bitch and I can’t wait until we get to merc him. Make that happen Bungie. Destiny 3 you choose, light or darkness or corrupted light. I mean guardians aren’t soldiers we are mercenaries and bounty hunters, scavengers, scrappers etc. I really don’t see much of a difference between us and the Fallen.

The problem is they’re doing it in ways that alter, retcon, and ultimately undermine what initially define these characters. For Cayde, it worked brilliantly. His roguish demeanor allowed him to go off the grid and a bit off the rails that ultimately came together: establishing an offensive front that eventually took down Oryx. For Ikora, it retconned her character and pieces of established history. She went from Crucible badass that earned her way into being the Warlock Vanguard leader to being someone’s underling. It also screwed up Shaxx, Twilight Gap, The Concordact and Osiris’ own estranged relationship with The Speaker. For Zavala, he went from wanting to establish a new Golden Age from being wary of old weapons, with nothing to establish why. He knows The Traveler is awake. He knows that it’s enemies are on the horizon. For him to be so suddenly distrustful of Rasputin is narrative whiplash. For Saladin, that makes much more sense. For Zavala, it’s jarring.

If we are ever to reach a second Golden Age, it will be with Rasputin at our side.[/quote] So it makes sense that after the Red Legion attacked the city he would try to find a way to make sure it never happened again. Because there is something else that has never been answered, who or what sabotaged the sensors that allowed the Red Legion to close in on the city unnoticed. Zavala's main goal is to make sure nothing like that would happen again, and who better to watch over the city then a all seeing AI. There is also the thought that after the events in RoI, Zavala now knows that Rasputin may not be the ally that he thought it could be. And for him to leave a threat uninvestigated would be way out of character for him. And when Ana shows up he has pretty much confirmed this and has decided that it is best to leave Rasputin alone. Keep him safe but never try to engage with it.
