Anyone on here ever feel like a disposable male?
Our society imposes numerous expectations on males. Men are trained to not show signs of pain and to ignore injuries. Non-compliance with this social construct implies that you are a weak and unmanly male, and usually accompanies ridicule. Men are less likely to see a doctor, and more likely to die while working.
Men are also expected to put the wellbeing of women well ahead of their own. A man is expected to risk his life protecting women. When ships sink, women are given the seats on the lifeboat first. Why should women be given priority? Why would men embrace an icy fate for women they don't know?
We are molded to assume these roles, and most men unconsciously embrace them without a second thought.
I found a good video that describes the phenomenon fairly well.

Edited by YerSpookyGrandad: 5/3/2017 7:54:49 PMThe thing you said about the lifeboats... I don't know how to explain it, other than it just being a given rule. Like the one saying that the captain must go down with the ship. I agree with both of them.

Anyone on here ever feel like a disposable male?
No, because my personal value isn't dictated by what other people think of me, or what society expects of me.

No, I'm doing fine as a male without conforming to anything that isn't reasonable to me. Some people will always feel like they're being wronged though.

1 ReplyHaven't watched the video, but I agree with a lot you said. Equality goes both ways: we can't say women are equal to men and then prioritize women. Everyone has value as a human, as an individual. Men shouldn't be ridiculed for expressing themselves and sharing their feelings. I find the adjective "unmanly" ridiculous, because it suggests that there's a certain way you have to act to be a man, just like I don't like "girly". If it's acceptable for women to be tomboys and do things that are considered masculine, like wear clothes made for men, men should be able to do things that are considered feminine, like wear makeup and clothes made for women. Just my thoughts on it.

8 RepliesEdited by OLDSCRATCH4: 5/2/2017 8:05:12 PMNot at all, I couldn't care even the slightest what someone else thinks of me. Though being a bit of an alpha male may be some of the reason for that, I just really don't care. And yes, I'm a women first type of guy, it just comes naturally.
