Guardians,
Recently, our conversation as a community has included a spirited debate about the role of the Hand Cannon in Destiny. We had that same chat in our own house. Here is a statement that our Sandbox Design Team created together. Those are the developers who work on the overall gameplay in Destiny. These are their words.
Hello Destiny community!
Due to a recent resurgence in feedback about “Ghost Bullets” we wanted to take a minute to explain how and why the weapons in Destiny behave the way that they do…
“Ghost Bullets” is a community-coined term that is being used to describe the frustration of missing the intended target due to weapon stats. The bullets aren’t disappearing, they just aren’t hitting the bullseye. Internally, we would call this specific aspect of a weapon “Accuracy,” which is one of the values embedded in the Range Stat of every Destiny weapon.
When looking at Destiny weapon archetypes, we wanted players to be able to assume a weapon’s traits through visuals and an intuitive understanding of how weapons work. Players can make the assumption that barrel length, and stability (stock) will affect the accuracy of a weapon class. These types of distinctive behaviors make for fun and interesting choices within the action simulation.
In short, Hand Cannons, with a relatively short barrel and no stock, are not intended to be long range precision weapons like a Scout Rifle or a Sniper Rifle. Instead they are big, heavy, pistols that pack a large punch. If you can control the kick, and close on your targets during combat, you will likely (as our friend Variks says) “Kill them dead.”
We want to very sincerely say that this communique is not meant to be argumentative or belittle any of the consistent feedback we’ve received on the subject. Regardless of how “correctly” the game systems are working, the core message is that shooting a Hand Cannon during high skill gameplay can feel inconsistent and/or frustrating for people. We hear you, and we are always looking to improve on that experience.
While it’s unlikely that we would completely remove Accuracy as a concept from Destiny weapons, we will investigate alternative options to balance Hand Cannons vs. other weapon archetypes. Destiny is a game that will evolve as players push, pull, and build the world.
You are wonderful people, the best community, and passionate about this game in a way that pushes us to always be our best. Thank you for playing, and thank you for reading.
To reiterate that the game makers just said: These conversations are never finished. Keep telling us what you think about the gunplay and the balance in Destiny, and us community guys continue to add your voice to their discussion about our creative process.

i just dont get why you barely have any ammo for handcannons, i dont have a problem with aiming my gun to hit someone
-
Edited by Strawbrie: 9/25/2016 1:57:04 PMOooooohhhh, no wonder I never hit with my hand cannon (not that I had a problem with that).
-
Haven't played in months...came back for ROI and bungie still catering to pvp. This game is supposed to be an adventure not a competition of who no-scoped whom. Leave that kiddie crap to COD
-
3 RepliesWhy are people complaining about this after 3 years?
-
I cant party up with certain people?...it says unable to join target player??
-
4 RepliesNeed help with the mission to get Khvostov can anyone help me?
-
September 2014.
-
I like hand cannons but you ruined them now it's all down to rng just to hit target and it's exactly the same in pve so congrats in killing primary weapons even further
-
You matchmaking for crucible is not right. I haven't won a game in like 10 matches because while I hold a 1.7 kd usually the rest of my team has around a .5 . They get ran through every game
-
Cause it even shoots better in a long distance than any other hand canon out there
-
But let me ask you a simple question. Why is it that The Last Word it's so accurate even when you don't aim down sight. It shoots straight more times than any other hand canon and specially since it doesn't have any range at all? And don't say the perks help it please be more realistic. Than that
-
If you say so sure
-
3 RepliesHaha nothing changes...had a break, come back and its still the same tech issue bullshit...ohwell lol
-
If you're going to use accuracy as an excuse, then fix hawkshaw and nirwens and Monte. If a slow paced gun can't hit the target, no way in hell should a high RoF.
-
Sorry, but this is such a half assed excuse! Why is ut that I can still get accuracy on enemies on pve but in pvp we have 'ghost bullets'?
-
I love had cannons and have and will always use them. I think you should introduce more variations and stats. Keep up the good work
-
8 RepliesYou guys have the best "gunplay" in gaming hands down period. If little changes like this continue I'm afraid you might be just another shooter. There's a reason gunplay in destiny is so great. I know this is cliche as hell but "if it ain't broke don't fix it!!"
-
Edited by GG ALLIN RIP: 9/24/2016 9:51:01 AMI've said that before and kids are like "nuh uh, they're ghost bullets! Bungie argle blargle blargh!" This post cracked me up. Too true, and they also gave some of you a "git gud skrub" reply. Lmao!

You should take note that this is a game. It is meant to be fun. Not hitting your target while straight up aiming at them is frustrating and thus not fun. You're sacrificing an element to cater to the competitive base. A minority who earn money out of it. Or don't have more else to do than destiny. Your changes might make sense. But they're not good for a video game especially since you did not start with it. The death mechanics are very satisfying which is why this game was good. If we cannot enjoy killing because our bullets miss despite were aiming centre. Then there is a problem. Please understand. PvP is not supposed to be the main focus. Quite a number of games have PvE and pvp under the same mechanics or engine. They did not focus on PvP and do the PvE element was great. The outcome was people not taking the pvp seriously which resulted in s very fun experience when you meet an odd. Likewise annoyed when you meet a meta sucker.

5,000 replies and almost two weeks later - you'd maybe think this topic should be revisited. Not to mention this post has been trending since its creation because so many people are disagreeing with this response. This is off-topic, but skill-based matchmaking is also incredibly stupid. Pro tip: start listening to your community on stuff like this and less on all of the cry baby nerf posts.

All I have to say is if a hand cannon can miss while aimed at a head, wtf did I just watch in that "GONE" video, half pulling the scope up NUMEROUS times to land a complete horseshit snipe, lol this game is funny
-
4 RepliesIf all accuracy is as far as the game is concerned, "a given stat that tells the game to randomly miss shots based off of any given weapons accuracy stat". I personally think accuracy is a bs stat for guns. Imo accuracy should be a stat attached to each individual player therefore not in the game. After all isn't accuracy just the players ability to compensate for the stability of a weapon? I know it might sound crazy to a lot of people but think about it really. I always know how accurate a weapon will be based on the stability of it. So accuracy should be solely on the player with said weapon and stability stat.

You couldve not posted this

I'm starting to notice this even on my scouts and it's starting to get rather frustrating. I don't know if the hit boxes have shrunk or hit detection has just been affected some how.
-
2 RepliesI'm even getting phantom bullets on my new roi scouts and pulses.
-
All bullets should go where the reticule is if within effective range. Please don't make the weapons randomly miss! We practiced hard to hit tiny moving targets.
