i don't intend on learning japanese at all but i do wish to solve a couple of conundrums involving the language
so there's three syllabaries, i know that much
katakana, hiragana, and kanji, which is based off of chinese
to my understanding, there are thousands of different characters (letters) when you combine all of that nonsense
apart from each of these japanese characters looking like absolute chickenscratch, i can only imagine that learning, memorizing, and even READING and WRITING these characters must be the worst thing ever
every japanese foreign exchange student i've ever met has perfect, almost robotic, handwriting
that's because japanese letters are so pointlessly complex
the point of the written word is to simplify one's thoughts onto an easily readable sheet
japanese just has to be so cumbersome about it
how do japanese keyboards work? is it like a graphing calculator where each key has a second and third character? because there's no way a standard japanese keyboard has more than fifty or sixty keys, that would be just ridiculous
i've also heard it said that of all the characters in japanese, most japanese speakers (even in japan) only know a small fraction of them, because they only need to know a small fraction of them in their daily lives.
so, what? if they're reading a book, or talking to someone, and they use a word they've never heard before because it's made up of a bunch of letters he's never heard before, what? is he just fucked? or do people just try to avoid using weird words in japanese so that people will understand? i mean, that sounds boring as all hell. I think part of the beauty of language is getting to use a bunch of strange words to get your point across in distinct emotional ways.
what are japanese dictionaries like? if you've never seen a character before, how do you look it up? the characters are obviously not ORDERED in any rational way, like the latin alphabet. so what gives? how can you look up a word if you don't know how to even look for it?
weeaboos should be able to help me out here
