Recently I found out that the new game [u]Outriders[/u] (a PVE only game) will be handling cheaters in an interesting way. They plan to ensure that any player found to be cheating will be flagged and will only be able to matchmake with other cheaters. I think this is a great idea but it's still unknown whether the cheating player knows if they are flagged or not.
While I actually had this idea some years ago it seems more relevant now then ever to be implemented into Destiny 2. As it is extremely difficult to stop cheating in online pc games there should be efforts to subvert it instead. The most important factor to this however needs to be a shadow flag, not notifying the player who's cheating that they have been caught. This would help to slow down the cheaters from making alts as they wouldn't know they are flagged, and now only matchmake with other cheaters.
By matching cheaters with cheaters you isolate the most toxic parts of the community into playing with each other instead of infecting the pool of players who actually enjoy the game as intended. Once cheaters have been effectively isolated into their own cesspool of toxicity, the various playlists across the game can begin to heal with a healthy player population. This in turn might help increase the healthy player base in some of the playlists that have the lowest population due to the perception of toxic cheaters.
While this method won't stop cheating outright, it should help to mitigate some of the most blatant cheaters (those with aimbots, wall hacks, etc.). It also shows that Bungie is willing to take any and all steps possible to solving the cheater issue (a huge win in community perception). Lastly, even if cheaters still play it will help to keep them away from the rest of us who don't, making Destiny 2 a more enjoyable experience for honest players.
