So came across the the "sunsetting is a scam" post the other day.
And i must say, i agree to some degree. I wouldnt use the language the poster used to describe the sunsetting of 50% of the content in destiny but i would agree with the sentiments.
To no surprise the poster got flame, but im not really here to talk about the post itself, im here to talk about the arguments in defence of removing the 4 planets and all of those strikes associated with said planets.
One of the arguments ive seen is the "dont like it dont play/buy it".
Its only ever really used when someone has a fair point about less than consumer or playerbase friendly practices.
So lets think about this one for a second. In the perfect world where people listen to that argument and all the people who dont like the choices bungie is making leave instead of giving important feedback, what happens to the game?
Well we dont have to look to far to see what happens when people listen to that argument.
Recall "Curse of Osiris" for a second. Do you remember the state the community was in? Cause i do.
When players complained about CoO content on forums or reddit they were met with the "dont like it dont play it" argument.
So people listened.
The game had the lowest player numbers in its history. A large portion of the community followed the "dont like it dont play it" advice and it was the worst time in destiny.
Pvp was sweaty because there were no casuals to fill the ranks.
PvE was empty, public spaces echoed with the voice lines of living enemies wondering were the gaurdians went.
And once a large enough portion of the playerbase left and lost interest so did the streamers.
Adding to an already disastrous bleeding of players.
And when players didnt see their favorite streamer playing; they stopped playing.
We know what happens when bungie makes bad desicions that the player base is upset with.
Sunsetting 50% of the games content it going to be one of those.
I dont think the agressive defenders should be telling people "dont like it dont play it" because when people take you up on that advice it directly negatively effects you.
I care about this game (wouldntbe writing this if i didnt) and i want to see it grow.
But CoO is a stain on the franchise along with the launch of d2 and i think the sunsetting choiceis going to be another one.
Bungie is coming off of 3 seasons where the community felt drained and bored and angry, a dlc (shadowkeep) that felt like a reskin with pink lipstick (srry devs dont mean to be rude but this was player sentiment, skillup review as exmp.).
And now to add to all of that frustration and anger they are being told that the only way the franchise can survive is if the devs delete half of the current game. I dont think in the long run this will go over well.
This feels like a perfect storm, it feels like the launch of d2 all over again and im wrried.
If the next dlc isnt god sent then i fear for the franchise.
Just wanted to tackle this one argument going around in defense of the recent bungie desicion.
I dont think this sunsetting of content should be a thing and i would prefer the game go dark for a year or 2 so that it could be infused with life again in a newer engine with easier tools for dev.
But thats just me.
Have a nice day.
Edit 1: ty for the comments, i tried really hard to present my points as clearly as possible. Ive also added paul tassi's article on the things getting sunset and how a lot of content is left up in the air in relation to its sunsetting status. Good read i think.
Edit 2: it would seem that my post has gotten enough attention that we are starting to get comments that are "i dont care it doesnt matter" more than they are reasonable points.
Continue to have reasonable respectful conversations and continue to raise valid points regardless of where you stand on this issue.
I recommend you ignore those comments that are made in bad faith as i will now be doing so. Youll get less frustrated and flamed that way.
Have a nice night.
Edit 3(?): made another long post going more in depth about how i feel (ik you didnt think i could write anything longer lol)
Fine it here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/256497689

1 ReplyGreat points. I personally think forsaken was the high point. Why dont they learn from that?
-
15 RepliesNo... without sunsetting, the game goes stale, and without content vaulting, the game gets too big for them to manage. This isn’t nearly as bad as CoO. We give up 4 planets that no one plays, and we get a DLC with a MASSIVE amount of brand new content. People will still play. They won’t leave.
-
You're absolutely right. So many things sunsetting, there are going to be things we miss. I will miss leviathan raids for sure. Menagerie with friends, farming SoS for the emote, yelling and going insane from failing CoS again and again. These will soon be just memories. What I think would be better, is make the "Destiny 2 vault" like a free dlc. You don't have to install it, but if u have the space and wanna play the old content, go ahead.

Well said. Stop telling people to leave because the changes suit you.

1 ReplyEdited by TJ_Dot: 6/22/2020 8:17:32 PMI'm willing to bet the game's file size won't even shrink when I guess 20GBs worth of crap is "going" Hasn't been enough proof to suggest this was happening this year, why for the next?
-
1 ReplySo, I've said my peace and made it. Lots of people told me to move along- so I have. This game is not for me any longer. Nothing ever works right. Nothing ever. After six years... This is where we are at? It still feels like beta testing. I personally think the game is in a far worse state than Curse of Osiris. Either that or it's just the cumulative fatigue of being a fan of destiny.

Edited by Demonic: 6/23/2020 3:01:00 AM🤷♂️ See how it plays out. I expect there will be glitches for a complete season, and we will get a poor excuse as always.
waits for ninja to, ninja this post as they seem to be on a Bungie protection streak.
19 RepliesSunsetting planets that are barely even used for anything outside of flashpoints is fine. It’d be better to cycle out essentially unplayed content.
-
A lot of the gear that I read is getting sunset, isn’t really. I’ve had new versions of the weapons but with this seasons badge in the corner. All I have to do is remaster work them thanks Bungie !!. Case in point, Bad omens the One I used to use was capped at 1060. The game dropped me a new one with a identical roll that is capped at 1360. I’ve had this with quite a few weapons tbf

I still remain part of the "Don't like it, don't play it" crowd. Besides, the game is most popular on consoles. You honestly expect everyone to buy into the nonsense that people will flood to the markets in droves to buy an extra hard drive because Destiny is using 200+ GB at some point? The game's population would drop dramatically that away as well. It's just not a sustainable model for a console game. Those people those gaming on budgets as is already obviously. Look at Call of Duty, people are losing their shit about it already. I really don't understand how people find it difficult to just stop playing something if it isn't for them. I skipped out on half of Y2 just because of the atrocious quality of Y1. I really only finished most of that content because I bought it up front. By the time I started back, Y2 was certainly an improvement. As such, Y3 is definitely better as well. The grind in this game is far less demanding than others I've played. Then again, I've also long since stopped taking games seriously and stopped trying to 100% everything so perhaps this is just the musings of a now older gamer.

1 ReplyHonestly, I'd rather have gone with d3. D2 could've stayed as it is now, with the majority of the content and destinations intact (excluding the y3 activities) and we could move on to something new. That way if we want to relive the campaign or just start a new account and go through the exotic quests etc we could. Removing so much stuff is doubling down on FOMO, not reducing it. The game will be vastly different for any new players to the point the story won't make any sense. I realise we have no choice in this matter, but I'll say one thing, I better not see any loading screens after September.
-
On a personal note, I'm fine with them vaulting several planets. Most of the destinations in D2 were small and had barely anything to do in
-
2 RepliesSo I hate the "don't like it don't play it" argument, but I am in favor of sunsetting. And mostly it's because I DETEST Io and Mercury and Mars is also among my least favorite areas mostly because Ana Bray is my least favorite NPC. I skip all those flashpoints. And if this will free up space so the game isn't massive and can add more stuff? All for it. I mean, we haven't seen what all is in beyond light. We know we are getting two destinations. I have high hopes and and hoping they add enough content to make up for what we drop. Also, I read that same article and came away saying "I already knew all of this. The title said more is being sunset than I think...who was this article written for?" Because it's not written for anyone who watched the stream...
-
1 ReplyThe real question is would you of purchased the content if you knew it would be vaulted a year later? Also, they only plan to re-release the old content in "new" dlc drops putting your already paid for content behind another paywall. It's disgusting, I seriously don't understand why people aren't going nuts over this.
-
Hey, I wrote the post that you are responding to. I can agree with a lot of stuff especially the stuff about curse. I personally didn't really enjoy curse that much, but i would just like for something to take its place that I don't have to pay for.

Firstly, thank you for the well thought out and presented commentary. On topic: I think what has the player base so frustrated, is not the sunsetting itself, but rather what Bungie is replacing it with. From everything we've been told, about 90% of this 40 dollar expansion is OLD content (some from D1, some from D2). Even despite what Bungie claims they have to do to bring D1 content to D2, this is a lazy, despicable, desperate cash grab on Bungies part. Honestly, they won't do D3 because they'd have to go silent for a couple of years. They're so afraid of not getting that steady cash flow from players it's ridiculous! D2 is in such bad shape right now, the best thing they could do is make D3! Fix the problems from the ground up (you know, like making a viable game engine that doesn't take the devs 8+ hours to load up a scene). It seems Bungie finally has an idea on how to complete this saga, but they're shooting themselves in the foot trying to tell it through D2's apparatus. I say first and foremost, fire (or demote) Luke Smith. Most of the terrible decisions are due to his overwhelming incompetence.
-
What a well thought-out, and reasonable argument, with many fine points. I think with half the content dissappearing, what is upsetting players is the feeling of losing something with nothing really to feel that space. I think if they were to at least announce like what kind of destinations or activities they were replacing with, people might not be as upset.
-
Since you're talking about shadow keep I'd have personally said red lipstick because well the hive got a new crayon
-
Edited by XXII: 6/22/2020 10:11:58 AMAhh yes CoO. When the Bungie community managers all hated me and I was a troll that hates Destiny according to Bungie fanboys. Good times.
-
Definitely agree. But as I've said before Bungie sunsets our loot, I (and many others) will sunset business with Bungie. I kinda do hope that Bungie fails though. Maybe then they will learn to stop listening to Luke Smith.

Even when gamers claim they are going to boycott a game, they end up buying and playing it anyway, which is why the suggestion of "don't like it, don't buy it" never leads to any kind of change directly; gamers have no self-control.
