Why is religion still such a prominent thing in the modern world?

It baffles me how idiotic the majority of the population can be sometimes

  • The way I see it, let folk believe whatever they want. I don’t care that you’re an atheist, or that that guy over there is a monotheist. As long as your beliefs do no harm to others, live and let live.

I just don’t like how it’s used to justify things. Don’t like gay people? Lucky you, neither does God. Don’t like other religions? Good, God says you shouldn’t. Don’t like people with different skin? Well, according to God, they’re heathens anyways. Religion might make you all warm and fuzzy on the inside, but when it starts encroaching on how other people want to live is when I start to have a problem with it.

            • “The word God has become empty of meaning through thousands of years of misuse... By misuse, I mean that people who have never glimpsed the realm of the sacred, the infinite vastness behind that word, use it with great conviction, as if they knew what they are talking about. Or they argue against it, as if they knew what it is they are denying. This misuse gives rise to absurd beliefs, assertions, and egoic delusions, such as "My or our God is the only true God, and your God is false," or Nietzsche's famous statmeent "God is dead.” ====Eckhardt Tolle. "The Power of Now." I get tired of these fights between religious fundamentalists and rational materialist who THINK they are atheists. The fact is that they are both flip sides of the same coin of tribalisitic intolerance. Only one side ABUSES Science in the effort to try to "prove" something that is not---and never will be---a scientific question.

For some it’s a result of fear. For others it’s a sense of hope. I can’t say that either apply to me. I honestly think it’s something leftover from the infancy of human discovery. It was our first attempt at philosophy and morality. And not a very good one in either case. It got us through some tough early times, but I think it’s a relic we need to let go of.

                          • Humans constantly seek out something greater, something more. We aren't satisfied with 80 years of life. We seek a means to extend thr lifespan. We aren't satisfied with a thousand or a million or a billion dollars. We always want more when we hsve it. We aren't even satisfied with the Earth anymore. There are actual plsns being made to live on Mars. So why should we be satisfied with a wonderless existence? Humans have always sought what is beyond, there's no reason to stop now. If you do not wish to, by all means dont. But it is in our nature.

It’s probably part of our evolutionary biology or something. Our brains are hardwired to believe - some more than others. There are some theories that we evolved belief as an advantageous survival mechanism. For example the ability to infer the presence of creatures (like predators) that might do harm to us (even when they weren’t actually predators there). This led to belief in spirits and god’s that weren’t there. Or the ability to come up with stories and explanations for natural events. It may also be a result of us being a social hierarchical animal - we have strict social structures and a desire to follow leaders. As societies got bigger and beyond the control of individuals it was a natural progression to invent more powerful leaders (gods) that could control all of society even when we weren’t directly under the eye of any human leader. That’s some possible explanations anyway.

Religion is personal. If you don't get it, that is fine, but you don't need to be insulting towards those that believe, even if they are insulting towards you or your chosen lifestyle. I grew up in the Bible Belt of Texas. I had hair down to my ass, wore black boots with chains on them, black jeans with chains on them, a metal t-shirt and wore a leather jacket with chains on it. I listened to heavy metal, played Dungeons & Dragons, did not go to church, etc. I was frequently a target for the local Religious Reich to target. Not one thing they did was what their "Jesus" would have done, even with their WWJD bracelets, necklaces and everything else to remind them of his path. This drove me to see all the negative & hypocritical bs they were doing. I lost all faith in a higher power. I became as mean, then meaner then they were. Then I got older, more mature and saw that I was full of poison and rage. I needed to let that go. So I did and I came to see that it was the people who were weak. They were not able to even try living the gospel they claimed to believe in. The ones who actually seemed to live what they believed, they did not talk about it. They did not beat you with it. They did not take it out and parade around with it. They just did it and led by example. I let people do what they need to do. If someone comes up to me at the gas pump or at my door preaching, I am polite and I tell them I am not interested. If they decide to attack that, then I tell them that I forgive them for being weak and ask them to leave. I know who I am, I know the path I have chosen to walk and I am happy. I am confident in my choice and I feel no need to bash people over the head with whatever my belief is, because it is personal. So what is my point? My TLDR? Stop hating and worrying about them. You do you and focus on being the best you that you can be. If there is a higher power, a creator, an all-powerful being, seems to me that it would not ask for anything more, just like any good parent does. Be the best you that you can be and don't let hate poison your heart.

                                •
It baffles me how idiotic the majority of the population can be sometimes
Not idiotic. It’s something different. I can’t think of how to describe religion, but idiotic is not the most appropriate word. I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in an all powerful being, and the texts of their holy books. I find it to be...whatever word I can think of to describe it. One of their teachings however is very important “treat others how you would like to be treated” I may not follow their religion or agree with their beliefs. But I do still respect the choices that people make. If someone is a Christian, so be it. Do not do wrong by me and I won’t do wrong by you. Same applies to Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists etc. Be nice to one another. Not hateful.

Okay but that doesn’t mean you need to look down on people because of their beliefs or lifestyle. The superiority complex is the exact thing that drives a lot of people away from religion, the idea that heterosexuals have superiority over homosexuals, that one religion is right and all the others are wrong, etc. To chastise people for believing in religion is hypocritical and is the same train of thought that drives people to religious extremism. Being right doesn’t inherently make you better. Individuals are individuals, I’ve met shitty people who are religious, and I’ve met completely selfless people who are religious and vice versa with atheists. Being respectful of others is an admirable trait that you can retain while being The world would be better if we were all virtuous rather than if we were all right.

Well I believe you're just an arrogant ass hiding behind your religion to justify your bigotry, but I don't hate you either.
