Hello,
My name is Ben, I'm a Marine Corps Veteran. I was in for four years and deployed twice to Afghanistan. My second deployment I was injured when my vehicle hit an IED. I had all my limbs and fingers so I stayed in Afghanistan. It wasn't until I got back in the US and they started doing tests that I realized how much that explosion screwed me up.
I had received massive brain injuries, scar tissue throughout my brain. It messed up my coordination, reflexes, and balance. I had a harder time speaking without stuttering and slurring my words. I have a harder time remembering things. And I lost a lot of my hearing. The headaches were the worst, a bad one would put me in bed for hours.
I went through a really dark time. Now disabled, I would rarely leave the house. I was ashamed of the way my injuries effected me. I secluded myself and became so depressed.
Destiny changed that. A friend of mine introduced me to the game and I was hooked immediately. I had already played the Halo games growing up, so I was already familiar with the mechanics of the game. The thing is, it started helping me. Slowly, my reaction times started improving. My hand/eye coordination too. My hands were doing separate actions but we're doing what I told them too. Even my speech, without having to focus hard, was improving immensely.
I started challenging myself to overcome these disabilities that were holding my life back. I started working out. I even got myself a job. Destiny played a big part in giving me that confidence just because it helped. I was recovering and having a blast doing it.
My hope with this email is that someone from Bungie reads this and knows how much they have helped me. That all the time and effort put into this game is appreciated.
I'm proud to say that I'm doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I have a new lease on life that I had almost giving up on.
Thank you for everything,
Ben

1 ReplyEdited by ScottyV550: 7/10/2018 5:35:33 PMI feel like these gaming companies should start making unique in-game callsigns/insignias for those who have served. Like if you enter some kind of number or something from your military service record you should get an exclusive in-game title or emblem or something so that you can be recognized in the digital world for your service in the real world!

Thank you for your service, Ben. May you recover fully from your injuries.
