There's no excuse for not having dedicated servers.

Especially when your company grossed 6 BILLION alone last year. Face it. We're in for the same connection shit storm that plagued both pvp and pve. But hey atleast we have in game match making and treasure hunts! Edit: Trending, yay Edit: Still trending. Coz baby let's get pizza Edit: can y'all please start using some logic for your argument? It's 2017 there's literally no excuse for your stupidity anymore.

  • no one will take Destiny pvp seriously unless dedicated servers are implemented.

    • So there's no dedicated servers, no private matches, and no 60 fps. I also wasn't really impressed with what I saw at the reveal. I'm really considering cancelling my preorder.

I hope this help people understand dedicated servers. "The cost can vary a lot, and it also depends on how it's done. If you host the servers "in house," then you're responsible for buying and maintaining the machines. That means hardware, backbone connections, bandwidth, support team, repair costs, electricity, etc. There's also the matter of having multiple connections to internet providers (we're talking backbone providers like Level 3 and Cogent, not last-mile providers like Comcast or Time Warner) in case one of them goes out or a line gets cut. Backup power in case of public power loss. And multiple physical locations around the globe to host local servers so everyone can play with a reasonable ping. Then there's the option of paying someone else to manage all of that and just rent a group of servers from various locations. I rent a cheap server from a colocation facility (~USD$66/month, paid annually), and I can host three maybe four copies of a Killing Floor server on it. Depending on how a game and server is made, a single machine could host many more. Thus, renting a quality server costs a thousand a year or more, depending on the quality of the server. And usually has a "startup cost" because they have to buy the hardware and don't want you renting it for one month and dropping it, sticking them with the hardware cost. Let's say a USD$1500/year server can host 12 copies of a game server. Steam Stats http://store.steampowered.com/stats says there are about 7000 people playing Evolve right now. Five players a game, that's 1400 copies that need hosting. 12 copies per machine, that's about 115 servers. At L$1500/yr, that's $172,500 per year. Plus any fees (generally several hundred each) for renting a new server. And it's likely they need to keep more than that available so people can still play at peak hours, even though in the off hours and a month from now that number of servers required is gonna go down. It's likely if you're renting that many servers you can get some sort of deal from the colocation agency. But still, it's a lot of money. This is why several games take the "free dedicated server" approach. Anyone can download the dedicated server code -- it doesn't have any game assets like sounds, models, etc included anyway -- and then host the game themselves. Killing Floor right now has thousands of servers online, none of them (or maybe just a couple? I dunno) hosted by Tripwire. It also has the ability to do a "listen server," so someone can start up their own local server that only runs while they're playing the game. Anyway, a more reasonable development solution, because it takes less development time and is compatible with consoles, is to have ONLY listen servers, and then only maintain a "master server" that helps point people trying to join at the people hosting. Which is why you see that a whole lot more lately than things like dedicated servers. Having a developer or more likely a development team build and maintain a dedicated server package for a game costs time and money to create and is then given away for free. In this age of DLC, it can be hard for corporate to see the logic in that."

      • I mean... They could improve the game's infrastructure and punish bad connections, but dedicated servers would definitely have been a great investment. Even 30 FPS doesn't bother me

        • What, you expect dedicated servers because you all cried about it in D1? Perhaps they chose not to do it because they do not want you negative people playing their games? Hahaha, just kidding, it's actually really expensive to run dedicated servers and perhaps, if you all just buy the game at launch, they might be able to cover the costs for three years and have them installed.

Very expensive to maintain servers. Especially for a game with such a larger user base.

            • It is minor with 4v4 game modes and makes no difference in pve. Hate to say but pc is the place to play for competitive gameplay.

              • Having dedicated servers would be nice and solve a lot of the problems but they also come with long-term viabilities. At first, they would be great but as time passed cost cutting would mean having to drop many servers across the planet. As these servers are dropped, more lag starts popping back up into the play. As the game gets older, the servers keep dropping in number. Eventually, the players would have to start forking over donations to keep a server online just for the game. No company ever has kept servers running for an old game like that. But, on the other hand, if you want epic battles and smooth playing? You do need the servers. That's why they opted to cut the players down to 4x4 for all crucible play. Less players, less lag. Sadly. I saw no real innovation in anything of the reveal about gameplay and mechanics. It looks as if they just streamlined some of the code by removing other code. When Bungie was with Microsoft, they had not only a company with nearly unlimited technical resources but they had access to some of the greatest codeing on the planet. Having Activision as a partner is limited. They are more the money guys and bean counters. Their just there to make money by controlling what can and can't be done. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Destiny 2 is really running on just a souped-up engine of Destiny 1. Its already been leaked that Some of Destiny 2 is actually some of the unfinished works and maps from Destiny 1 that never got released. As long as it all works good and plays smoothly, I won't complain. But the 4x4 PVP thing will most likely be changed very quickly back to what we have now. Especially if we have many of the same types of matches we have now. Can you see control with only 4 players?

              • Why can't you stop complaining? Why can't anyone stop complaining? Jesus christ, you act like dedicated servers and 60FPS are required. That's a luxury. I haven't seen anyone who says "60FpS In 2017 iS a MuSt! AnD WHy doN't WE haVe DeDIcatEd seRVErs?!" mention a console shooter that is 60. I'd assume some actual rehashed content like Call of Duty is on said list, but Destiny is a different and much larger game than Call of Duty.

I can already see the dozens of posts of new players complaining about lag, disconnections etc. Same stuff over and over again. Dedicated servers should have been a given especially if Destiny 2 is supposedly a lot larger than Destiny.
