I'm well aware that Rift is not the most popular game in the Crucible, but it's my favorite way to play Destiny. Please allow me to explain.
I've been playing shooters with a Clan - the same Clan - since Halo 2. We've taken a long path to get to Destiny, migrating through Call of Duty, Gears of War, Battlefield, Grand Theft Auto, Titanfall, and anything else that let has let us play as a team. Throughout those journeys, I've always loved objective-based gameplay.
My favorite scenarios occur when a game lets me acquire a crucial element (i.e. "Ball Taken!" or "I've got the bomb!") and choose my own path. I've never been comfortable defending a fixed position, and I'll usually lose a one-on-engagement in a kill-or-be-killed scenario. In a gametype like Rift, however, a gamer like me gets to shine. I know I'm not alone.
It's a rush to collect the Spark and go into full Quarterback Mode. I'm always telling my Clan that, if you want the Spark, you need to be willing to call the shots. The perfect Spark runner has a good sense for enemy choke-points. They link up with teammates and drive forward as a unified front. Or, they can use those same teammates to lure enemy defenders away from the flank they intend to exploit. Some of the best moves in Rift have nothing to do with pulling the trigger. I love the mental game - the tactical cat and mouse of it all.
I know... I know... This makes me "part of the problem," entering Rift with a solid team and winning through the brute strength of coordination. Playing Rift reminds me of amazing times that I had with the same old friends playing Assault or Capture the Flag. You can't change what you love. I'll take the scorn that comes from what we call "Victory through superior recruitment" if it inspires just one of you to go here and dip your toe in the water.
Please don't be mad at me for saying so. Please understand that I've been cannon fodder in every other Iron Banner. I've caught more than my fair share of Nova Bombs in the face like an idiot as I tried to control Zone B all by myself. I've been sniped out of the air like a clay pigeon as I floated around on Warlock wings in a game of Clash. I've bathed every map of the Crucible in my own blood - and I've been happy to do so. I love playing Destiny, and I don't mind giving you my Light. Someone has to lose, and it usually tends to be me. With Rift, I get to enjoy what's in my wheelhouse. It's been refreshing.
So, if you've played Rift this past week, I thank you. This Iron Banner has been a great time, and I truly appreciate the people who have played with me, even if against me. I've added some much-needed Light to my Warlock. I got to reconnect with some people on my friends list in the ways we used to play. Much love for every single Guardian we've met up with through Matchmaking - and that one lone wolf we pulled onto our team.
Mind you, the Crucible Team did not put Rift into Iron Banner circulation because I asked them to. I think maybe they know that there are players like me in the community, and they wanted to give us a chance to play some ball. Peace.

I agree with you. When you work together, rift is so much fun.

Spoken like a true Guardian of the Light.

Rift is fun if you can get everyone on the same page

17 RepliesI'm really pissed off that so many people are just mindlessly hating on Deej. In my opinion, him and Cozmo are great.

Agreed. With my crappy .75 kd average across all three toons, being a year 3 player, rift gives me, my clan, and my random fire team a chance to shine when I grab that spark and haul a** around, above and through the opposing team. Whether I am blinking around the map with my hunter or warlock, or titan skating and evading through the opponent, it's my time to shine. Nothing better then to hear your team say "he did it again" or "Sean's got it, let's go" I rarely say anything when I'm the runner unless I'm calling out shots to my defender, or letting them know I'm cutting loose and they need to go forward to deceive the enemy. I listen to them and it works. If I'm playing with randoms without Mics I follow who ever is in front of me, looking at my radar and the field in front of me. It never fails. I get caught, I get shot, I get hammered or titan slammed. I'm not the best but put rift in trials and I will gladly make the lighthouse my home.

Id love to play the game, how about fixing your servers, or better yet, not pushing a patch that isn't freaking ready.

That kd is lower than my chances to get a date...

7 RepliesAs little as you actually play your opinion is not necessary

4 RepliesI was going to say some positive words and tell you that you're not alone, but then I saw your username and now I don't want to be a kiss ass. It's nice to know though that the studio staff actually enjoy the game as much as we do.

Thanks D.J. Good read. I could never imagine you playing PvP. Plus. On a team? Big plus. Well, I play solo, do not use supers, and you definitely do not want to play with or against me in Rift: https://youtu.be/XFDHyMh2qvs You and your team, please have a great Xmas! Cheers!

Whaaaaaaahoooooooooooooooo☺

This IB was the first time I've ever played Rift, i always queue solo, so any game mode that requires PTFO-Ing is rough solo.. I had a couple of good matches, most of them weren't.. but I see the draw to it, it really would be a blast with a full fireteam.

Iron banner rift is awesome. Could have done with a few extra maps though if it goes on for a whole week! I hear what you are saying about co-ordination and human shields, but grabbing the spark and legging it through a volley of gunfire to ignite the rift seemed quite productive too!

It good to see others who realize a players value is not only in their K/D. As a primary-Control-game-type player I have many times sacrificed K/D for that zone. Or distraction tactics of just running around in the enemy spawn with the only intention of living as long as I can in the enemy camp to free up time for my teammates more time to capture zone B. There are always the unsung values and unrealized contributions that many players bring to a team dynamic. So I also loved Rift, as it give others a time to shine too. Thanks Bungie! Keep it coming! P.S. It's ok for me to jock Bungie this once, because most other times I'm give my feedback by "game-plaining", complaining about this and that... lol

All this hate. This man more or less plays video games for a living. If anything I'm jealous lol

I only play ib for the drops. Most people would rather the game end with a slaughter to get more drops. I do not even try hard. Often squating in the corers with others. If i see a team of 5 or 6. I wait for the match to start and then quit.

Edited by jayslooow: 12/13/2016 10:55:55 PMI just played it as clash got my bounties done then left.

I don't mind rift. I don't even mind losing, but getting spawn trapped by a team of 6 that consists of players who top the destiny tracker leader boards is not fun lol. Not really much you can do about it due to the mechanics of that game type but I guess people need to vent their opinions regardless

I never have problem with you and i salute you for that post, i think you are quite funny tbh and in the end off the day you only a front man PR guy. Doing grate job man, most of us know it, game developer know it but i don't need to tell you that.

Rift sucks. I will never play an Iron Banner Rift. Don't do it again

1 ReplyYou know there is a problem when they start having to rationlize the game type. "We're breaking up those teams to find a better match"....
-
3 RepliesWho else read this in DeeJ's voice? 😂😂😂

3 RepliesIt's a nice thought. The reality, though, is that Rift is not a popular game mode for people who play Iron Banana. IB is for random, unorganized people who just want to get good gear (I guess I kinda fall into that category too). Yes, organized teams will ALWAYS be at an advantage compared to randoms. At the same time, the matches won't be challenging for them and they probably already have better gear and IB randoms to begin with. Not all Crucible game modes work for what IB has established itself from all these years. That's something to keep in mind. Want to add it to the rotation to give everyone a fair shot? Go ahead but remember the games that appeal to the majority and work the best for IB.

I like Rift as well. I was a lone wolf & I got lucky enough to be on some great teams. I too prefer the objective based (besides killing each other) type of games. I had a blast & Rift is probably my favorite match type. I kinda wonder exactly how evil Mayhem Rift would be......

Edited by Original Shuggy: 12/13/2016 9:31:54 PMLmao it's funny how indestructible you are once you pick up the spark. Headshot/super? Half health dealt.
